Jay, I use a Big Sky International Insulite pouch. The reason I got it was for keeping meals warm while cooking like your Repack but I also use it to store my water filter in. It insulates it from freezing so you have a piece of gear that is providing multiple uses. I also use the insulite pouch to carry cold items on the way out of town to keep them cool. Good luck with your hike.

I'm not sure if I missed why you store your fuel canister upside down, but I think that if you stored it right-side up then your stove will fit into your pot with the lid all the way on? I like the paper towel trick! We use a kerchief for about the same purpose, but also to wipe the moisture out of the pot. I really wish I'd gotten a spoon instead of a spork because of the same reasons you mentioned, plus it's a bit easy to poke a hole through the plastic bag with the tines on the spork. I'm not willing to switch because it's still FUNCTIONAL, but if I lose my spork 🤨😜... buh-bye spork and hello spoon! I also like the little trick with the rope-to-clip trick on your food bag - I'm gonna borrow that one for our use too. Great review and video, thank you for sharing. And as always, good luck & GO #ATclassof2022 !

I keep the canister upsid down primarily so the bottom of the canister doesn't rust. I also like the concave opening where I can put all my stuff. Used to work great before but my stove is a little bigger now.

Interesting thing about drops; they are uniform size regardless dispenser. Size of the drop is determined by surface tension, not dispenser-tip. Another interesting fact is that virtually all drops have a tiny follower-droplet (which violates the first principle right off-the-bat) and it is almost impossible to produce water drops without those tiny follower-droplets. Theoretically, Part-A drops (HCl & water) might have a slightly different surface tension than Part-B drops (NaClO2 & water), but this author would ignore that and just assume water dominates, and all drops are identical.

Another great video! As for the Ursack, I thought about putting a jingle bell of some sort to hear the bear messing with it. Also, if you take a small trash bag, turn it upside down and poke a hole through it, you can pull your ursac cords through it before you hang to keep it dry.

Nicely done, Jay - I always enjoy people sharing their thoughts on the fundamentals. I lost my spoon on the Superior Hiking Trail and ate the rest of my meals with a tent stake, which worked surprisingly well. It was one of the ground hogs, so more surface area to capture food with, I guess. I do eat out of my pot though, and I'm sure eating out of a bag with what is essentially a spike may be difficult. +1 on having a loop tied on the tab of the food bag. Cheerio!

I always love your videos. I hiked the Tahoe Rim Trail last summer and had a bear chew up my ursack. It was tied to a tree above my head with figure eight knot. The mother bear chewed and slobbered all over the bag and pulled so hard I had to cut it off the tree trunk. My food was ruined and the bear wouldn’t leave the camp site. Lesson learned, if a bear is in your site they won’t leave so you have to leave. I would hang the ursack. It’s scary when they enter your space at 3:00am. Good luck!
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 2 года назад
Ursack's web site also showed a quicker release knot but with a big carabiner. I wonder if that would be even more nonjamming since I really want to avoid cutitng the line. My knot app shows the figure 8 as a jamming knot. I wonder if I can try one of the nonjamming knots and if it'll hold the bear bag as securely. I've heard that a bear saliva soaked bag can stink pretty hard. I'm not looking forward to that.

After many hikes carrying my polished bowl spork, you have convinced me it's time to move to ditch the spork and switch to the spoon. I've come close to popping holes in things with my spork and honestly, those tines are not doing much for me. Thanks for laying out such a good argument!

I really love my MSR deluxe… If you are only boiling water it may not be worth it, but if you are interested in cooking in any way, it is as good as a stove in your kitchen. The piezzo lighter is a fun perk too, it works great. Take the time to sit with it to fold it up, kind of like a Rubiks cube, it makes sense once you know the pattern.

If you're going to buy another set of AquaMira then keep your existing bottles for your premix solution. Your drop size coming out should be correct. Put a small piece of duct tape or somehow mark it so you know its the premix and not the A or B. Also, to keep my pot from rattling, I use part of a lightweight Pac Towel . I use the same towel to wipe off condensation. Double use!
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 2 года назад
Good idea about the old Aqua Mira bottle. I think a small enough rag for my pot would be too small for my condensation. :) Joking, I mostly use my rag to wipe ice off my tent.

Most of the water for the first 500 won't have much in the way of sediment if you look. It will be COLD this weekend. The Smokeys already had to airlift a hiker last week as he got hypothermic after a couple of feet of wet snow at near 0 F temps. CC skiing was decent on Roan last week with just under three feet, but the 40 mph gusts on the exposed ridges will let you know it isn't spring.

@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 2 года назад
The good cansiters are isobutane/propane (MSR, Jetboil, Snow Peak) and you'll see all the more generic ones like no name or Walmart brands are all butane/propane. When it's warmer they should be fine. Some stoves don't like the Walmart types though because the valve stem is deeper than standard so some stoves can't press the nozzle. I always forget which work and don't.

That's a lot of water! So far the 750ml has been the right amount. I wind up stuffing random food items into the pot if I wind up with an 8oz. It's crazy the mark up cost between an 8oz to a 4oz per oz.

Thank you for validating my decision to take butter for my oil. So many people I have talked with tell me it will spoil. I can remember my mother leaving the butter out on the table, so nicely it would be okay.
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 2 года назад
Yes people still leave butter out but most people that think it needs refrigeration buy butter mixes not 100% butter which gets super hard when cold. I carried butter for weeks on the PCT and only stopped because once it warms up it becomes a big mess. It tastes so much better yhan olive oil. I only wish I could buy them in single sticks everywhere instead of boxes.

@user-ei1ym1lq6h
@user-ei1ym1lq6h 2 года назад
Yeah, I had the same concern with using the freezer bag. Is the original food packaging even safe? Most people I've seen just heat water in the pot and add the food. When they're done, they will add a little water, swish it around, use their spoon to clean whatever is left then drink it. I'd rather do that than trust the plastics not releasing polymers as you mentioned.

@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 2 года назад
Yep, I show it in a video. If it's upright all the weight is on the top chord by the narrow neck of the bottle and I've had bottles slip off before. You also have to really tighten it to hold the bottle. Upside down all the weight is on the bottom one and the thickness of the bottle holds it in place so both chords can be relatively loose. It's easier to hang the bottle this way especially with gloves. In winter it's nice because if it freezes the bottom is up so that will freeze first so the cap doesn't get frozen to the bottle.

Forgive me if this question has been asked but can you use an empty aquamira bottle? It could solve drop size and bottle size issues mentioned.

Yep someone asked. I got a 1/4 oz bottle and it's perfect.

The sheer volume of hikers on the AT, thru and otherwise, has created a lot of problems with habituated bears, and it seems to be getting worse every year. Much more populated than the PCT.

I agree. I'm anticipating a fair share of them especially because so many people new to the outdoors hit the AT as well.

what about Bear Vault requirements now in place in some places?
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 2 года назад
There's just a very small section by Blood Mountain that requires a bear canister and only from March 1st through I think Oct something.

I love my old white ursack but I never tied it to a tree. Have you considered the Potable Aqua Pure Electrolytic Water Purifier? It looks interesting, you just add salt and it kills viruses too. I like aqua mira too, just hate the wait time.

Interesting way of purifying water. I was trying to stay away from batteries and such due to the cold. Cool gadget to try someday though.

@@JayWandersOut that's a really good point. I'm super curious how the premixing of aqua mira drops will work. I didn't know you could do that.

Jay, hit me up when you get ready to hike the AT. I have been a Sub since your PCT trip. I live in Greensboro, NC and would love to help you out when you get to Northern NC/Southern Virginia. Semper Fi!

Nice video Jay. I hope your food is safe, but I can't help to want to see that video if it's not 🤣

That would be fun to see. I wish videos had smell-o-vision so people could smell the bear saliva. I heard it's pretty bad.
