This is my first vlog for my Calendar Year Triple Crown attempt. I initially intended to complete a winter southbound through hike of the Appalachian Trail. However, after encountering challenging circumstances I decided to pivot to a northbound AT attempt. In this video I hike from the US-Canada border to Grindstone, and then make my attempt of Katahdin.

Glad to see you're still continuing your triple crown attempt this year! Masha and I were both shocked to hear you were starting northbound. Great attempt at such a difficult starting point, stay warm! -Ethan and Masha

Thanks Ethan! It was a totally different world up there. A combination of snowy wonder and hell. One little mistake, dropped phone or etc could literally cost your life. Maintaining that for another 400 miles south was simply too risky in my assessment. Hope that makes sense! Hope you guys are doing well! If I get back ahead of pace we need to catch up on the phone!

@@JaruWalksthat makes complete sense, I was shocked to hear about you starting your journey in Maine. Would love to have a chat if you're waiting to charge in a town or something like that. Keep it going! I have no doubt in my mind that you'll get your triple crowns by the end of the year.

Your video just came up today and really grabbed my interest of a SOBO winter hiker. Now subscribed and will watch your NOBO winter hike. I am an old time hiker, and you being young and ambitious reminded me of younger days gone by. Listening to your attempt on Katahdin, you made not only the right decision, but the correct decision to not continue past the tree line under those conditions. By your fire fighter friend Vin, not making it past the tree line and talking it over on your ride to Portland surely eased your mind that the both of you made the right, correct decision not to continue. No sense dying on any hike let alone your first week! I will be watching your videos as this sounds interesting watching a real time (2024) Triple Crown attempt. I wish you the best and all the luck to succeed in your quest of the Triple Crown!

Hey, don’t kick yourself for not reaching Katadin summit mid winter. Scott Benerofe /Aquaman did a winter SOBO and he couldn’t summit Katadin either. He went south to complete his hike and completed it later. He did it because it was the most difficult hike he could think of. But that doesn’t seem compatible with a triple crown. You did the right thing to flip down south. I will be following you. Thank you for sharing.
@JaruWalks

Agreed. I wanted to try SoBo for the same reason. I’m trying to make it as hard as I can. And I’m happy to find my limits along the way instead of construct it in an “easy” way and never find those boundaries (not that any CYTC is ever easy). Aquaman is an inspirations and a beast. Thank you for your supportive feedback!

Dude... why didn't your friends drop you off closer to Katahdin? Mt. Washington. I subbed just now! Holy crap! If you pull this off!!! Incredible!!! Wait!! Why are in North Carolina? The trail starts in Georgia. I'm confused. Did you plan this out or just shoot from the hip and see where it takes ya.?? Holy crap!! Good luck dude!

Just an FYI, Mt. Katahdin is NOT the Highest mountain on the AT. It’s actually in the Great State of Tennessee at Clingsman Dome at 6,625 Feet. Thank God it’s NOT in Maine that for sure!! The Highest Peak is in God’s Country….Tennessee Baby!!! Let’s Go!!!! Happy Trails!! 😊

Thanks! I started the NoBo from the southern Terminus in Georgia, have completed Georgia already, and am now in North Carolina, but I have not edited the videos for that yet. I will soon though. My top priority is getting the miles in right now.

New subscriber here! I’m enjoying your videos. Did you use FarOut for the section from Canada to Katahdin or what did you use for navigation? It looked like a lot of road walking! Are there any shelters in that stretch or is it just camp wherever you can find a spot? I had no idea Maine had such a large Amish population! Very interesting to see.
@JaruWalks
@JaruWalks 5 месяцев назад
Thanks! I used a downloaded offline Google maps file that covered the state of Maine, and a paper map that I got at the bus station in Portland. There were no shelters from Canada to Baxter. Most of the land in Maine is federally owned and preserved, so I just hopped off the road into the forest in places where I had not seen a house in a while and no fence was there, ie trying to stay off private property. It was all road walking, though if I had planned it better, there are snowmobile trails you could follow thru the woods. The hike across Maine was stunning, especially meeting the locals. I honestly would like to return again in winter, or do more road walk hiking. You totally absorb the local culture in such a different way. You see everything. There was so much I saw beyond the clips here, no way to capture it all. My favorite thing was the melted snow I used for water tasted just like the smoke that came from the Amish homesteads. It must be that the snow absorbs the flavor of the trees. A charred musty woodsy flavor. I had no idea about the amish community. I feel like when I was younger people thought of them as “crazy”, but with the state of technology today I can see how that lifestyle could be appealing. They all seemed very organically present and zen. If you do camp out here, just make sure you carefully research winter camping, because it was right around 0 deg F the whole time I hiked, which can get unfun quickly if something goes wrong. Thank you!!
