Hear Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra saxophonist JOE TEMPERLEY tell his story of when he first arrived in New York City, played with Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson and joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
In the words of Wynton Marsalis, "there is no greater sound on earth than Joe Temperley on a horn."

In 2005, my wife and I were not jazz fans at all. I had known of Wynton Marsalis from years before, because I played trumpet as a kid, and I'd mentioned him to my wife, and the thought that maybe I oughtta pull my trumpet out from under the bed and give it a blow some day. She bought me a birthday surprise, concert tickets to see Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, Alberta. The concert was the night before we flew to New Orleans for the first time. The evening was a tribute to Coltrane, whose music we did not understand. But what we DID understand, was that we were hearing, for the first time, one of the greatest orchestras/bands that has ever been assembled, and that each and every member of this orchestra was one of the best musicians in the world. Our jaws were in our laps the entire evening. Floored. At one point, Joe Temperley played a solo. After his solo, (still during the song)Wynton says something like "Mmmm, you gotta know THAT was sweet". And it was. The next morning we took off for New Orleans. And it changed us. This concert, in my mind, was part of the whole vacation to New Orleans, and my wife and I have been jazz lovers ever since. And not only that, but other forms of art. I think my heart was changed, and the whole way I view the world. Thank you Joe.

Joe says it all in just a few minutes-he was so naturally articulate-but I could listen to him for hours. Would that I had met him.

Joe has a beautiful sound and feel. Please share some more of his playing. It's great to hear him unaccompanied.

I'm reminded of Joe Allard - it's all about wisdom and experience being imparted by playing and speaking. It's also about the way in which it is done, and of course we are all at a loss when we miss out on accepting the message, especially from this greatest generation.
