Red in the Sky is Ours is imo their best album, it's a lot more progressive and left-field sounding than anything else in their discography too, love the violins and their creepy embellishments, after that i'd have to say Slaughter is the second best.
The Red In the Sky Is Ours is one of the best albums of all time. It invented melodic death metal but it also went way further than anything that came after it. Composition wise and emotionally nothing At The Gates did after that compares to it.
The Red in the Sky is Ours and Garden of Grief ep are by far my favorites from this band. They actually kind of lost me at Slaughter of the Soul although it is a great melodic death metal album. I just prefer the more raw and aggressive dm d
1. Slaughter Of The Soul 2. At War With Reality 3. To Drink From The Night Itself 4. Terminal Spirit Disease 5. With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness 6. The Nightmare Of Being 7. The Red In The Sky Is Ours
At the Gates have released one of the most iconic metal albums with "Slaughter of the Soul". This one brought me right into the harder metal music, when I started to listen to metal. I still love this record from front to back, the other two records which came after SotS were also very good. I must listen to the first three records, because I have never heard any of their songs
I really liked your top 3 and I actually have them in the same order ,Slaughter of the Soul is one of the greatest melodic death metal albums ever made 👍👍🤘
6. To Drink From The Night Itself 5. The Red In The Sky Is Our 4. With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness 3. Slaughter Of Soul 2. Terminal Spirit Disease 1. At War With Reality
Good list and I pretty much agree with ya, tho I'm gonna go against the grain here and say that I slightly prefer At war over Slaughter!.. Also in case u didn't know, At the gates released a shit hot live album a few years ago called Live purgatory which I'd say sounds even better than their studio output!
I can certainly agree with you placing To Drink From The Night Itself being placed on third place, this in my opinion is the return to At The Gates's 90s version of their Melodic death metal sound. The balance of doominess, melody and foreboding atmosphere of To Drink From The Night Itself is for me the quintessential Melodeath record. At War With Reality, I do not know why some people dislike this album? I understand that it has this "overproduced" sound but I personally love the polished sound they gave on the At War With Reality record because you can definitely hear the buzzsaw brutal sound mixing of their songs this way. Make no mistake, I also like the raw style of their old records but once in a while you can have an Extreme metal album with great production that actually works.
The first two albums are above all because they had Alf Svensson in the band, when he left everything got simplified and commercialised, they completely lost their authenticity. Not saying it's all bad, but The Red in the Sky is Ours and With fear I kiss the Burning Darkness are unparalleled pieces of art
With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness is probably my favorite album title ever. Also, At War With Reality is my favorite by them probably. I mean, Slaugther of the Soul is a classic and it's great, but something about the atmosphere and songwriting on AWWR clicks with me. And the outros holy shit, like The Circular Ruins.
Gardens of Grief - 9 The Red in the Sky is Ours - 10 With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness - 10 Terminal Spirit Disease - 7 Slaughter of the Soul - 4 At War with Reality - 5 To Drink from the Night Itself - 5
I didnt listen anything else than slaughter of the soul(which was awesome)and i dont really understand how could you give listen to all these albums from shitload of bands.
