Atarashii Gakko take on a classic movie theme: Ghostbusters! AG discussion #15 with AJ Hartley 

I think that AG have a good shot at becoming Japan's biggest musical export ever! The reason being that they "stack the deck" with their likability. They come on all smiles and energy and that just primes the audience to like what they do. Then they proceed to give a hugely enjoyable singing and dancing show.

Brilliant analysis, as always. Thank you for doing this type of analysis, through it we get to appreciate even more AG work. A lot of points that get lost in translation for us AG fans, nuances which otherwise would totally fly over our heads, not just because we don't speak the language but also because of all the cultural differences.

(8:26) "it's the fear in ourselves [...] even though we're shooting outwards in fact we're shooting inwards - this is very very Atarashii Gakko". Babymetal back then had to use Karate for the same result ...

Excellent review - thanks! There's always so much more in an AG song than meets the eye (and ear)! At first I was surprised to hear them being involved with Ghostbusters, but I soon realized that AG were a perfect fit and in fact I can't imagine someone else doing it better. After seeing the video I was very enthusiatic about watching the movie. Sadly, after the official movie trailers that's no longer the case. And yes, although I've started with Hiragana and practiced quite a bit in the last weeks, I still didn't get the あいうえお, and also not the numbers. I guess I should start to pay more attention to the Japanese lyrics.

Really great analysis! I love the Babymetal references. I agree with you that they should have included the song with the US-release of the film.

At first, it was just ok with me. But after several listens, I can say that I really love it. Standouts for me are Rin's raps and Mizyu's melodic vocal. 😊

I've already seen the new Ghostbusters movie and the Atarashii Gakko MV is far more fun. The movie suffers from a poor script and tries to fit too many characters and plot points into two hours and it's sound track is curiously flat and unexciting. The World tour venues are not large, but there's a lot of quality in there like Bataclan in Paris. It's a big step up for AG.

They make horror movies in school buildings? That's adorable! I'm a teacher and can attest that school is at times quite scary indeed. AG's theme as far as I understood it here is "The world is scary, especially growing up, so we have to fight, but don't you worry, you're not alone." As you said yourself, this sounds familiar to any Babymetal listener and is apparently a common theme in Japanese youth culture. Which means that young Japanese are scared or at least worried. I used to think that this was a special German thing (German Angst and all that), but when you imagine beeing close to and challenged by China in an economic and maybe even military sense, I get it. Ask me about economic decline and the war in Ukraine. I love that they posed with Ray Parker Jr. Despite Suzuka sticking her tongue out, this is about respect for those who came before you and on whose shoulders you are standing. Yesterday I bought a ticket for AG's Cologne concert, and after this video I realized that I need to educate myself about their work a bit more, not least because I don't think I can expect subtitles during the concert. Luckily, you already did 14 videos about them, so I'll be watching those. Having said that: as always, professor, thanks a lot for putting in the time and work to turn us into better informed listeners and fans.

Love them. It maybe A.G. worst video. The frozen makeup makes them look alien and unattractive, the quick cut editing dilutes their choreographic magic. They get to rap, but over all the video is a mediocre crossover, to a mediocre movie.
