The Falcon shipped with the option of a single internal 2.5" laptop-style IDE hard disc. The default offering was for 65MB (yes, megabytes, kids), but I was flash and received an 80MB one.
Of course, these days, spinning metal isn't all that and the ability to pop out an SD card and shove it into your PC to add files or configure things is very useful indeed.
Except the default Falcon byte order isn't compatible with everyone else's interpretation of the IDE standard so additional conversions steps are required.
The obvious thing to try is to add a second IDE channel via an adapter, boot from the master in Atari-mode and have the slave in PC mode with some software compensating for the change in real time.
Let's try that...

That cable in front of the screen started to do my head in.

Interesting video! I've had nightmares with HDDriver on my Falcon when trying to setup 2 drives! Not sure why but when working with the 2nd drive, the 1st drive goes pear shaped... At some point I will investigate! On the STFM / STe I use PP's driver - it just works, and with the Ultrasatan it allows me to read the partitions in Windows - so much easier than messing around with other drivers or converting the endian etc.

ACSI on the ST is 8 bit so I suspect the byte swapping issue doesn't really come into play. The only real problem I have with PP's drivers are they are designed to be extremely lean, so don't include the more modern nicities, like XHDI, which MiNT requires. As a big MiNT user they're a non-starter on the Falcon for me. It's nice there is choice, but a shame no decent open source driver exists, except buried within EmuTOS. Which might be a line I'm pursuing. ;)

I believe you’re only allowed to work on the PiStorm for the ST until it is working perfectly 🤔

Hi, very interesting video, thanks for this! I will give a try, because, as you say, the LAN on the cartridge port is slow and unreliable.... I have a question: how do you run EMUTOS on your Falcon? I didn't know that it was even possible...
@thetechnoshed
@thetechnoshed Год назад
Thanks! My DFB1 accelerator card has a flash ROM which lets me boot alternative operating systems, but there's nothing to stop your burning a 512k version of EmuTOS to a compatible EPROM and mounting it instead of TOS4 under the memory board. I've videos on both my DFB1 booster and flashing ROMs for the Falcon on my channel. Have a look. :-)

I apparently bought a multirom cart at some point that has EmuTOS on it as well...

You could have used a IDE2SATA adapter to allow the use of SSD drives using 256GB drives or 3TB
@thetechnoshed
@thetechnoshed Год назад
Sure, but space isn't really the problem, interoperability is -- I'm only using a 16GB card at the moment after all.

@@thetechnoshed What about disassembling the COMMODORE AMIGA HD driver and see if it can be made to work with the ATARI FALCON.

Was not enought 40 wires kable for connect 2x HDD to Falcon030 like was used in PC? I had got F030 with HDD 3,5 inch and I connected 2x HDD eg for copying.

This is instead of the cable and also adds a twist for PC compatibility.

Are you using "blowup" software or something similar for the higher resolution?

Centscreen, IIRC. Plays nicely with MiNT, which few of the others do. Seems impossible to configure, however.

The thing I'm trying to do is to have the SD card work both in the Falcon and in my Mac (or Linux box, or whatever) to be able to copy files to and from it. That doesn't work (other than with EmuTOS) with the big-endian arrangement.

Isnt there a scsi interface? I owned a falcon, an interface would be possible

I've not found a modern source for the first generation high-density SCSI plugs the Falcon needs, unfortuantely.

@slaapliedje

It does have a SCSI port on it. Specifically it is a half-pitch 50 pin scsi port. I have been trying to find a HPDB50 Male to 50 pin female for hooking up something like a ZuluSCSI. Haven't had a whole lot of luck.
