Very good review on this SD 60. At first i thought it was an Ex - CONRAIL unit still in blue then into lease mode. I cant even tell that it was an Ex- NORFOLK SOUTHERN unit..... Until you showed the other rebuilt modified ATHEARN Genesis unit looks like a CN type cab. Nice demonstration & run of this engine i'm very impressed DG MODELWORKS. ✅
I purchased this locomotive and liked it so much I also picked up the other 2 ex-UP, NS patched versions. I did add the ditch lights and made them functional as the prototype. The coupler cut bars were slightly in the way but the overall appearance was just fine. I also added step lights and truck/ground lights. I purchased the DC versions but I installed Loksound V5 DCC chips. Seriously, you can’t beat the RTR value!!
Great review! Thanks for the no sound running. I am glad you mentioned the comparison in level of quietness in running between Genesis and RTR. I was thinking as I was watching this that the RTR is the same or even quieter than some of the Genesis models I've heard. I like how Athearn's look, I just wish they would source better motors and or gear boxes or whatever it takes to make them run quieter like ScaleTrains for example. Regards, NS.
Cool review! Im really liking all the new athearn rtr with the economy sounds. However i hear diesel locomotives at my job everyday! Never gets old lol
Great to see they're adding tread pattern on the walkway of RTR line now :) thanks for the review, and I did enjoy learning the history of the unit too!
That’s a great review for a good looking locomotive. Thanks for the added bonus of the history lesson, it those sorts of detail some of us for overseas never get to know. The super elevation on the corner by the mine/paperwork’s looks fantastic. Keep up the good work Deryk.
Wow that's absolutely awesome that Athearns making the primed for grime stuff in locomotives I didn't know that it's awesome an ho scale manufacturer is making weathered locomotives pretty cool since I'm getting back into ho scale now I'll definitely have to try and get some new athearn locomotives great video as always derek
You can use Details West DL -229 ditch light castings for the pilot mounts. I just trim the tab opposite the mounting lug flush with the top of the light which lets the mounting hole to be as high as possible to avoid the lift bar. You can use your favorite Leds to light them using DW's provided lenses. You will also have to seal the back of the ditch light with liquid electrical tape to prevent light from leaking out the back. I have done a RTR Conrail SD60 and recently a Genesis NS SD70ACU with Helper link using these castings.
hey dg, it's the grumpy old fart from n.h. here, another great video. i'd like to give a shout out to midwest model railroad, i did an on line purchase from them, and was impressed with how fast my stuff arrived. keep up the god videos. john
I'm so glad to hear of your experience with Midwest Model Railroad! They are a great store and offer the fastest shipping I've experienced. Thanks for the feedback and compliment on the video.
Nice review of a pretty nice model Deryk. I also enjoyed the history lesson. It’s amazing how it looks completely different after the rebuild to a 60E unit. Thanks for sharing. Hope all is well
My SD60M with Tsunami 2 sound and LED's was very jerky at speed step 1. After I ran it for a few hours it smoothed out it also got so quiet that it made no sound when it's muted. Totally worth it in my opinion. The one problem I do have is the LED'S Are very dim
When I get my programming track set up that's still in storage when I moved houses. I'll try increasing the brightness of the LED'S if that doesn't work I'll rewire them with a Monster LED kit. That I use on Athearn BB locomotives Kato and other budget friendly locomotives.
Thanks! not having a screw to hold the tank on is the strangest thing. I'm not sure why they did that. My guess with the ditch lights is...they are still using old molds they have from before ditch lights were ever used. So there are no easy provisions for operating ditch lights.
I actually got a DDA4OX, but sadly, I have been so busy, I never got to do a video. on it. I do have something in the works for it, if I can find the time. Thanks!
@@DGModelworks ended up buying an NS 6517 one of the ex UP / ex HLCX ones. Runs great. Also, I just realized your name was Deryk so my bad for calling you Dan all the time 😑
