Guide for Athena's basic tools and combos to get you started playing The King of Fighters XIV. These combos may not be optimized, but range from beginner to intermediate in difficulty and should give you a head start in learning this character. Feedback and questions are welcome!
Please refrain from character requests. I will create a guide for the entire cast, but I will go at my own pace. Please understand.
Additional notes:
Bracket damage is based off a st. D xx MAX, cl. D starter.

Athena is a very simple character to play, but her combo game is quite odd. You're not really going to be hitconfirming into combos as much with as you are going to try to play the neutral game with fireballs or land command grabs. Really focus on the command grab combos and the MAX mode combos.
Technically Athena can combo into supers from lights by doing into dp A, but it takes a ton of dexterity and really isn't worth it. It isn't something I'd teach a new player.
There are a lot of intricacies to some of her command grab combos, but I tried my best to shove them all into the video. Let me know if anything is confusing.
I know a lot of players use the (air) qcb BD special as their MAX starter usually. But those combos are actually pretty terrible. So don't lol
I want to add that if you land a CD but you aren't close enough for a fireball, you can do f. B xx (air) qcb B, qcb K, then dp C. Didn't think to include it :/

Notation:
P = Punch
K = Kick
A = Light Punch (Square)
B = Light Kick (X)
C = Heavy Punch (Triangle)
D = Heavy Kick (Circle)
st. = standing
cl. = close
cr. = crouching
j. = jumping
b, d, f = back, down, forward respectively
[n] = hold n direction for at least half a second
qcf = quarter circle forward (d, df, f)
qcb = quarter circle back (d, db, b)
hcf = half circle forward (b, db, d, df, f)
hcb = half circle back (f, df, d, db, b)
dp = dragon punch (f, d, df)
rdp = reverse dragon punch (b, d, db)
xx = cancel
arrow = do immediately after unless specified
- = follow up
(n) = cancel after nth hit of the move

sorry the noob question, I'm new in this game, but the combo at 3:15, when you are in the air, how do you cancel right after qcb D? I only can perform the combo until qcb D.

no worries! It isn't a cancel, you just uppercut after the teleport. If you're having trouble try the A uppercut instead; it's faster.

Coliflowerz I did it. Finally I could perform the full combo after several tries. Was only a timing thing, I made a bit of a "pause" between qcb D and the super, and got it. Now I'm having a hard day with other combos haha xD

So what is the point of the ball super, it dosent seem like all of them hit. I was wondering if the damage the same either way?

Suigintou101 Yeup, the game only allows one of the balls to juggle, so it really only hits once. However there is a glitch where if she cancels her CD straight into the super in the corner, both will hit because they'll both hit on the same frame, so the game doesnt have time to register that one has hit already. The opportunity for this doesnt happen too often in matches; if they miss an uppercut or if you guard break them are ok times, so I didnt include it, but it does monstrous damage.

as ok thanks for explaining. I do not like KOF and prefer Ultimate Marvel much more, so Im trying to shut up my friend up by learning the game and showing how much easier KOF is and how marvel is much better and has a high skill ceiling that you cannot see unlike KOF. Its a ok game but I trying to learn a few characters.

I mean you cant ToD characters for one meter in KOF :P I play both and each take their own skillsets. You're doing yourself a disservice with that kind of attitude tbh. You could be missing out on a fine experience.

I previously played kof 13 and didnt like it, so im just learning so that I can satisfy my friend that keeps talking about his dissatisfaction of marvel. I just bought this game and I already have a team set, just have to relearn Mai and Athena and learn MIan. We made a deal that if I win against him in a FT 20, he will not talk bad about marvel and wont annoy me anymore. Though we are very great friend sad that he dose not even want to give marvel any time at all.I subscribed to you as your videos were great help though.
