I travel to Greece to see some of the amazing sites and grapple with the scale of time that people in Europe live with.
Engineering facts about the Parthenon:
- The human eye has a tendency to play tricks on us. Columns set in a line will appear thinner in the middle than at the top and bottom, and the columns in the middle of the row will appear thicker than those on the edge. To combat this, the pillars were built slightly wider in the center than the top and bottom, and the pillars in the corners were built slightly wider than those in the center.
- Since people view the Parthenon from the ground, it would have the appearance of sagging in the middle because of the way the human eye perceives long, flat surfaces. Knowing this, the acropolis was built with a very slight rise - only a few centimeters - towards the center, making it appear more flat than if it were actually built to be perfectly flat. This design also assists in shedding rain water.
- The pillars are also angled slightly inwards from bottom to top, which gives viewers from the ground a better view of them, and adds stability in the event of earthquakes.
