Athens Scams: A Twist On The Scam Harald Baldr Exposed 

My father-in-law was in a crowded subway in Paris. A guy dropped his change and my father-in-law bent over to help him pick up the change. As he was bending over, the guy tried to take the wallet out of his back pocket, but my husband was watching and pushed the guy out of the way so that he couldn’t steal the wallet. I hate thieves and scammers!

Hi I am from Athens. I have already mentioned that scammers, usually young gypsy kids, do this in Athens, in Harald Baldr's video. Also watch out for pickpockets in Athens. Micro crimes are a huge issue here in Athens.

Im from Greece , and gypsies are really causing big issues there. Pick pocketing / scamming, and basically everything you can imagine. Hope you enjoy(ed) your days to Greece and i really hope this kind of situation doesnt make you feel uncomfort about revisiting us.

Scam them back, put gum on your shoe and step on the spilt coins and walk away with their money.

I'm greek and happened to watch your video and for all those who are going to visit Greece, I have to advise them to not give a shit about these people. They are well trained scammers and if you kick their cup they usually start screaming and demanding money from you. This video is 2 years old so they weren't that well used to that scam and didn't really know how to act. Nowadays though they usually follow you for a minute until you give them some money. So I strongly advise you to really not give a single shit

I was sitting next to this guy, 4 years ago when he did it in front of me! I was more impressed by his trick and blew my mind what people think to scam other rather than expose of report this guy. I hope someone will take care of them.

It makes me feel sick watching this. You can't enjoy a trip to Italy, Greece or France. The officials of each of these jurisdictions may as well take a cut because, by doing nothing, they are facilitating it.

40 years ago in Italy it was a common thing for a group of kids to surround you asking for spare change. If you dipped into your pocket and brought out anything one of the kids would slap underneath your hand. Everything flies and falls to the ground, then scooped up and gone.

I have a friend visiting Athens, and got in to the same scam but when he went to pick the coins from the floor, another scam member pickpocket him. the best advice is to just keep on walking, do not stop for any one you dont want to.

This scam made me laugh because is the most harmless thing out there right now in Athens lol I'm Athenian and the city is turning more dangerous every year for the locals let alone the tourists

Happend to me too in Brussels. I was sorry and helped him to pick up the coins, but had no intention to give him something extra. A friend of mine, a local, was with me and he gave him something, but he also said to me that this is a common scam. Next time this happens I won't help them to pick up the coins and just ignore them and walk on. But, better they do it that way instead of stealing your phone or wallet.

Definitely not the most heinous scam I’ve ever seen, he doesn’t seem to be requesting money, it’s more about them noticing his cup. Obviously however, with more generous, sympathetic tourists, that’s where the real dough comes in.

These guys are the grave for real street artists.

I know Athens very well. At my last visit in may I saw a young man with a horrible wound on his lower leg, begging. I took a good look: the wound was dry and flat. That could not have been that way, so was it a painting? It was! 300 meters from there I saw a man with legs that had both been amputated just above the knee. That was real. After passing him I pondered what I saw, returned and said to him: sorry I ignored you, and gave him 2 euro's. His gratitude was genuine and was worth a hundred times as much. It humbled me.

Imagine kicking cups of 10 kids in a row in an hour and thinking what kind a horrible person you are how can you be that cruel to kids .... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😃

The girls pretending the money fell down the drain pipe when I was here, so people was giving her/them up to €3

In early 2020 I was in Athens and this also happened on the road/walkway to the Archeology Museum. The kid had the cup, but he was beside a grate, so when my friend supposedly kicked it over all of the coins went down. I heard maybe 1 or 2 coins, but there was quite a few down the grate and he wanted my friend to give him money for his loss. He had a companion with him who actually threatened to call the police. My friend actually felt bad at first, but I told him it was just a scam. I told the guy good luck, but we don't have cash.

Moral of the story: never ever ever ever under any circumstances give money to anyone on the street, no matter what

I’m from Greece athens. My father told me that when he was returning from his work he saw a beggar begging for money. Since he’s very patient he decides to wait what happens next; hours past he saw the beggar stand up (by the way I forgot to mention that the beggar has no legs) and that’s how the story ends😊

I once got into that situation in Athens. Knowing what to expect, I didn't bend down to collect the money when I accidentally spilled the content of a transparent plastic cup. To no one's surprise I got shouted at by a few gypsy people nearby. My friend glared at me as if I was a monster and he quickly gave the old woman whose cup I spilled one euro in compensation. I later told him about the scam and he quickly felt very stupid.

I have only been to Athens one time, in 2005, and was only there for a day or two. I got scammed twice there. First in the taxi from airport to hotel - i handed over a 20 euro bill to the taxi driver and was focusing on something else when he came back holding out a 10 euro note telling me that i had only given him 10 euro. Second scam - i was walking through a mall of shops and a Greek man came up to me all friendly and asking where i was from and then pretending that he knew people from my place of origin - then he offered me to come for a drink, took me to a bar nearby and sat me down. then a little while later i was told by an employee in the bar that i had to pay 40 euro for the drink ... it seems that the "bar" was a pick up point for prostitutes. i was not amused and went to report this to the police but they were not interested. anyway i hope that this will fore warn others who may go to Athens and face the same sort of scams. In any event i will not be returning to Athens or Greece as a whole after that experience.

Yep, unfortunately we have some of those 😠😡😤Also in past times taxi drivers made a bad name for us😠😡😤 But in countryside things are much more better. In my village at Ancient Ilis,we offer food and drinks for free to guests. The same happens to Creta and many other places.But in Athens.....be careful 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️😒

I remember in France a woman approached me with a ring claiming i dropped it. She asked me for money, but i offered her a banana instead. She was furious and demanded the ring back. I just threw it as far as i could into a park, ate the banana and walked away.

Watched this one happen on the same street today in Athens, might have even been the same kid I’m not sure. Guy didn’t fall for it, or feel like giving him money, but I felt like such a wise and experienced traveller when I saw it since I’d watched your video earlier today. Thanks for sharing, hopefully these kids can get off the streets and into school someday.

My friend, you should avoid the big Greek cities unless you want to visit ancient sights. Pickpocketing and scamming is quite common. You should go to the islands or small towns.

Scam on german highway, mostly by a team of two east european ladies with very offense tank-top and shorts. They clean your car window, flashing their boobs, but refuse to take money. They ask you to bring them to the next gas station or parking. On the way they start soaping and wetting themself with their window-water and play with the foam and wet tshirts. Often they involve the driver in soapy things. After you were disattracted by their lesbian playing and you left them on the next gas station, you notice that your change from portemonaie has gone!!! Lucky me I always have less than 5€ in cash!!!! This happened to me 7 times in ten days on A7, A1, A29 and A2.

Yep. I fell for that one, too, last time I was in Athens. Not the same dude, though.

Same thing happened to me a couple of months ago. It was really rainy day, main walking street in Athens (straight from the Syntagma square). The young girl put coin box literally within my walking path (of course I haven't noticed that on time). I accidentally kicked it. Other people have noticed it as it is crowded all the time, I was really embarrased. The girl was really in a poor shape, I have her 5 euros as a compensation although inside was probably no more than euro. I don't regret it but nor approve it.

More often than not, hustlers are part of a larger group, which is controlled by local gangs/mafia. They would probably get the s**t kicked out of them if they turned up without 'permission'.

I would have gotten into a fake fight with my buddy and have him push me into the guy and knocked him over and hopefully broke his accordion. Then run away with my friend chasing me.

The worst I've ever had was on a bus tour in Greece, we stopped at one of these cafe rest stops. This guy is on the edge of the patio panhandling, trying to get everyone's attention, shaking his cup with coins and whistling. I could tell he knew the boundary and that if he set foot on the patio, the owners would rush out and shoo him away (or worse). But his whistling was SOOOOOO annoying, I ended up giving him something like half a Euro just to GO AWAY! I shouldn't have, but he really was ruining the little time i had to enjoy a cappuccino. As a rule I won't give money to any panhandlers, but he was just so annoying I wanted him gone. I still feel bad for rewarding his behavior.
