how can anybody who ever rode in an atki borderer forget the sitting on a blanket on top of the engine between the seats, so many great memories of going with my dad all over the country on school holidays in his borderer.
I still drive a 10 year old Scania tipper like this. Old habits die hard, but I have never worn out a clutch or destroyed a gearbox. This is the proper way to drive.
That Atkinson sounds amazing with the cummings engine, my dad drove for Bass & the Atkinson he drove had a Gardener 180 and he always wished he had a Cummins Engine model, he use to say it was comfortable and was like driving a car, he later switched to a Scammell Handyman which he didn't like after the Atkinson.
that is a proper mans truck it sound brill when i first past my test i went to liverpool with 20 ton off sugar from hull docks i just love hear one again well done restore it sounds how a cummins should brill
my dad drove a cummins 220 6 speed in the 70s. hes Volvo f88 290 was in for repairs.the atki sounded nice. but empty was slower on the hills than the Volvo loaded.but I do love the cummins.
Thats when you had to be Able to double de clutch on up change and into neutral rev up and into gear on down changes. Had to learn this 33 years ago on a leyland constructor mixer.💪🤙😃
The 220 Cummins kicked Gardeners backsides...and gave th Atki a heater!:) and linked via a 10 speed Fuller to a 2 speed Eaton rear axle was a flying machine!:)
I rode shotgun in her many times as an Apprentice of Mr Whitehouse between 86-91 when she was used to ease the work load on the main tractor unit which was a 1624 Merc 4x2 daycab. For anyone interested, she would take either low loader trailer. Swan neck Craven Tasker or the Beaver tail semi also Tasker. On the back would be anything from CAT D4, D6C, D6D. 951. 943. Akerman (now Volvo) 360 excavators and Onions Scrapers. CAT D7G and D8Ks were usualy taken by Hudsons of Dudley, just down the road. The clutch pedal squeaked then! The engine cowl always rattled and the passenger window would forever slide up and down as the old Atki bounced under the strain. Happy days of my youth.
I used drive one.in 70s for William.nuthall as.a.shunter in.london.tip at.dagenham load reels of paper at.sittingbrone used.take.all.day. no rushing.about then
