Something you will almost never see again. NFC conference #1 broadcast at AFC HOME fearlturing 2 sub 500 teams on a game blacked out locally. Turner musta had some pull this season. Looks like there was some last second pull out to do a Meadowlands extravaganza where Pat & John would do both Giant and Jet games, since CBS would feature wrap up show fol 3pm game. Jets @ Meadowlands would havta wait till next year 😮
That Falcons '83 team lived and died by the sword. Won four games trailing in the 4th Qtr (including the crazy White Shoes Johnson Hail/Fail Mary finish vs. the 49ers later that season), and lost five when leading.
Going off memory and refuse to "google it" but didn't Curtis Martin in the snow in 2003 against Pittsburgh have a longer run? If not it was very close, somewhere between 75-80 yards at the Meadowlands in a snowstorm.
@@rustykuntz94 Bilal Powell had a 75 yd TD run vs. Jacksonville in 2017 that Jets PR and Radio broadcast initially said was the longest in Jets history. Bruce Harper happened to be at that game and told them "check again."
I watched Pat and John call a LOT of games growing up, but a Falcons vs Jets game was SUPER rare for them. Especially since both teams had losing records at the time.
This was an NBC doubleheader week, so this was probably CBS' game with the widest national distribution. 49ers-Rams (both were 5-2) later that day may have made more sense competitively - Dick Stockton and Wayne Walker were announcers for that one.
@@G50-o5w Thing was, Wayne Walker and Johnny Morris in particular were still among of the last regional broadcasters that the network had, Johnny Morris did 10 Bears games in '83 while Walker did all 12 CBS 49ers regular season games in '83. 49ers had a 15-1 record in '84 and Bears had the same record in '85 and that prompted CBS at an affiliates meeting in '86 to make the decision to have their higher ranked teams call those types of games. Since Walker and Morris were respectively lower on the CBS depth chart in '86 they hardly saw their regional teams that season. That led to each of them resigning from their positions in CBS in the spring of '87.
Believe it or not, it wasn't even the only inter-conference game Madden and Summerall broadcast from Shea Stadium that season! They did the Jets-Rams contest from Week Four of that year.
@@johnvisconti9848 Yea Richard here has that game in his collection. Long, Wild game. 1 of only 2 homes games the Jets won at Shea in 83, their last season playing home games @ Shea.
@@rustykuntz94 Thanks for your reply. Believe me, I am familiar with that contest. I worked for years on an article based on that game. The essay explores the various ways fans can interpret, or read meaning, into an NFL game. Unfortunately, readers have to watch the game in order to appreciate the article, and it was written so long ago, that it may seem obsolete today. Now that NFL games are available everywhere, most of my older ideas ring hollow. Did you attend that game?
