Things turn ugly for the Jets in the 4th Qtr. Bad passes, drop balls, penalties, etc cost them dearly. Billy white shoes Johnson came up huge for the Falcons.
I was at this game Was sitting in the upper deck couldn't believe the way the Jets choked this game away What made it worse was that I was with a friend of mine at that time who was a diehard Miami Dolphins fan Tragic news day for our country The day 273 marines were killed in a truck bomb attack in Lebanon Remember going home after this game and watching Steelers at Seahawks on NBC Following night Giants vs Cardinals 20 to 20 tie in OT
I was too young to ever see the Jets at Shea (was 7 in 83 during this last season there). But my Uncle who got me into the Jets was a die hard fan and had season tix in the Mezzanine. Said those Nov & Dec games were brutal w the open stadium and the freezing winds off Flushing Bay.
White Shoes Johnson....part of the Pro Football HOF All-Decade teams in both the 70s & 80s....stats really fall short for HOF overall consideration, but he proved you could be a flashy receiver and returner and NOT a diva.
TY Richard, I had been asking for more old Jets games from Shea Stadium. Even though this is a disastrous collapse LOL! What else is new from the Jets.
Did Ken O'Brien get drafted by the Jets in 83? I believe he did but not 100% sure. If he started at QB for the Jets, instead of Richard Todd, their fortunes might have been different. I don't know if O'Brien wasn't fully ready or that Joe Walton was too loyal to Todd? The Jets imo should have been a playoff team in 1983.
@@survivor5044 Yes, Kenny O was picked 26th overall just before Marino, one of 6 QB's taken in the 83 1st round of the draft. He didn't see any action for the Jets in 83. Todd & Pat Ryan took all the snaps. Kenny first played in 84
@@survivor5044 Also Richard FYI in September of 83 O’Brien & Gastineau got into a infamous scuffle at NYC’s Studio 54 and were arrested. Walton kind of expected that out of #99 but was very critical of Kenny in the press about that and virtually ignored him the rest of that year and probably why he never saw any action even though by the end of the year the Jets were out of it. Also he wore #16 where the rest of his career he switched to #7.
Priceless stuff. White Shoes is my favorite player of all time. I have the NFL Films game of the week version of this, but hadn’t ever seen the broadcast footage. Had no idea Madden and Sumerall did this game. Thank you for posting.
That Jet backfield without McNeil sounds more like a law firm: Crutchfield, Augustyniak and Dierking. We're here for you! And of course the great, do-it-all Bruce Harper.
Through most of the 1980s, Summerall did more games of the Giants by far than any other team. The Giants happened to be on the road on MNF this week (the infamous 20-20 tie at St. Louis), so CBS let Pat have the next best thing, the Jets in what turned out to be their last CBS game at Shea
This was Summerall and Madden's THIRD Jets game in less than 11 months. They also had the Bucs game in '82 and the Rams in '83., and later also did vs. Giants in '84, vs. Bears in '85, vs. Saints in '86 and vs. Cowboys (strike game) in '87
