Archaeological sites are under soil and rocks because: #1. We, other animals and various weather problems cause rocks to be moved around - especially random flood events which often occur near rivers where a lot of human settlements tend to be built. #2. Soil, dirt and sand builds up surprisingly fast - there are ancient Roman buildings where they were forced to cut new entrances into the wall above the old ones after mere centuries of buildup. Just look at pressure washing/lawn care videos to see how fast you can get a thick carpet of soil and roots building up after mere decades ON CONCRETE.
