I disagree (but respectfully) If someone started watching AoT as his first anime, it would be SO HARD to watch something else. It's (in my opinion) the peak of storytelling, drama, cinematography and characters, watching something after that would be disappointing
I disagree, it’s kind of like Game of Thrones being your first Fantasy experience. Half of the fun, enjoyment, and appreciation of Attack on Titan is how it subverts the typical anime expectations and tropes.
Attack on titan raises the bar too high, any other anime a non anime watcher watches after aot would be kinda mid. I usually like recommending the promised neverland season 1 or death note as someone’s first anime
Aot was my first anime (not counting when I watched but initially never finished Evangelion over a long period of time) and almost two years later I am absolutely still obsessed with everything about it. I’ve listened to the soundtrack daily ever since I initially caught up with the show, and get very emotional thinking about what a masterpiece it is. While I was once worried this may ruin other anime for me, due to possibly being disappointed that they don’t reach the level of aot like many have argued, my worries were unjustified. While aot is and will likely always be my favorite show of all time, let alone anime, I absolutely love Hunter x Hunter, Code Geass, Vinland Saga and more, because of nearly equally beautiful stories and themes that have genuinely touched my heart while watching them. While I love how aot breaks typical anime tropes, I’m still able to enjoy the lightheartedness and goofy aspects of say Jujutsu Kaisen and HxH, because they don’t take away from the stories being told and add to the characters being portrayed. While I was hesitant to get into anime before watching aot, as a starter anime, it opened my eyes to how anime can tell stories and how visually appealing the animation can be. We live in an awesome time for anime, getting to see aot through to the end and hundreds of amazing projects being actively worked on and released each year. It makes me happy to see that it has become so popular and accepted around the world.
It's tricky cause on one hand, AoT is a masterpiece, but in many ways it's hard to follow depending on the person. What I like to do is imagine how much a parent would enjoy the anime, or anyone who's had zero exposure to anime period. Attack on Titan's exaggerated style of comedy is absolutely crazy to someone who has never watched anime, I can easily see that putting newcomers off. I think people who are used to anime have become desensitized to a lot. One example on the top of my head, the comedic moment with Pieck wishing she had 3D manoeuvre gear during a time they're trying to prevent the end of the world. As someone used to anime, it's not a big deal, just a quirky, funny moment during a high stakes situation, but to someone new, they instantly recognize that moment as completely absurd and it takes them right out of it. Many anime, particularly AoT are riddled with this style of comedy, which is very much not newbie-friendly. Not only that, there's also the kind of story AoT is. Even die hard fans, and people who have been exposed to many anime, have a hard time following the story, and even wrongfully criticize it due to their inability to comprehend it. Eren's paths shenanigans, having an omnipotent awareness of reality, the power to orchestrate events... but also living in a predeterministic universe where everything that will happen, will happen. Eren sending the titan to eat his mom... Eren's multi-layered motives, and vague desire for freedom, not only are they not newbie-friendly, they're not anyone-friendly, as we see with contentiousness of the ending. Attack on Titan for me is a 10/10, but I'm personally mixed on whether it's a good first anime. That style of comedy exists in essentially every anime, but the one I've always thought is a good first anime is Death Note. The idea of a book that you can kill anyone by writing their name and abusing that power is a concept anyone on Earth could wrap their head around. The comedy is still their but it's subdued compared to AoT, and that little bit of exposure could help prepare them for anime in general.
I disagree. Attack on Titan is very hard to understand for starters. Plus storytelling or narrative-wise, it's not the greatest of all animes. The Last Season (SPOILERS) gave us very lazy writing like the alien-sea-monster-worm that gave the powers to Ymir that has never been explained, which also brings us to the origin of the titans, the greatest mystery of AoT was because a girl tripped over a banana from Mario Kart and magically a worm came and gave her powers; the war of 2000 years was because Ymir was in love of an abusive king and just watching Mikasa kissing a corpse made those 2000 years of war in a closure of peace; the narrative convenience of Falcon having wings (which was cool but it was very convenient that at the end they remembered the Female Titan had a new power); Eren having the control of past, present, and future? Why then change the history kind of Jojo's Bizarre? (Which I didn't like) this is a move that if the author doesn't explain it well, it will be very criticized, just like people were criticizing Dr. Strange in Marvel: 14 millions of possibilities and only one we win, ok so why not use Dr. Strange powers to mutilate Thanos arm? Why not revive Tony Stark with time-stone? If there was 1 out of 14 millions of possibilities, why is there another multiverse where they win? Why not use erase memory spell? So on so on, Izayama need to explain more if he wanted to make the case that Eren can control past, present, future, like for example, why wait 2000 years to end the Titan war if he can make the case of a woman killing her crazy love one so that Ymir can say oh well I could have done the same and not protect the king but protect my children, so in other words, why not make Eren and Mikasa's story in other people 100 or 200 years after Ymir gained her powers?; and finally and the memest one: Eren became a pidgeon!? Reencarnation wasn't never mentioned or never has been a possibility in AoT, and if it wasn't reincarnation, the pidgeon trying to put Mikasa's scarf is veeery romantically-forced, it would make more sense if the pidgeon wanted to steal the scarf or something else. I recommend you to watch Hunter x Hunter or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, both have the greatest storytelling and narrative of all animes. Berserk also, but I don't recommend you to watch it. One Piece also have one of the greatest narrative, but I agree, it's veeeery long xD
You do make some valid points. Full metal alchemist was my first anime but I know a lot of people that were introduced to attack on titan first and they became hooked
A video essay that's only 3 minutes long? More like a video book report. 😂 But anyway I agree. AoT is an anime that even non-anime viewers can put on and enjoy. Naruto? You'd have to explain what fillers are. Bleach? Wildly inconsistent in quality. FMA? You'd have to explain the original and then Brotherhood. But AoT is solid all the way through. The best part about it is its consistency. No filler arcs, no sudden drops in quality, nothing like that. I'd say it's tied with Death Note for the best anime that a causal viewer can just pick up and watch.
Attack on Titan is the one of worst choices you could make for any first anime. It sets a subconscious expectation that there must be many more incredible anime out there, like this, when in truth there isn't. I'd recommend something more digestible and straightforward. Also, if a newcomer picks out a revered "classic" and it doesn't live up to their expectations, they'll assume the entire medium of anime's classics can't be great either. Better to pick one that's great, but not best of the best.
@@hggpi Well people actually have standards now, so telling people with a life to watch a 500-episode show with anime cliches is the best way to make sure they never touch anime ever again. Heck, they might even spread their dislike to other people giving the anime medium a bad name. Attack on Titan and Death Note remain the defacto picks for people trying to get into anime, they hook you and never let go (besides the 2nd half of Death Note). You have to realize that this is the Subway Surfers era where people want things to happen fast. Do you really think a normal dude who already thinks anime is weird would change his mind when he sees "sexy jutsu"?
