Always knew Goku was the most important character in Berserk

Gaston is a reminder that bad things happen to good people.

Gaston is the embodiments of " It wasn't much, but it's an honest work.." just a normal dude with his own dream who climb high enough to be the second in command of Guts, the actual war hero commander.

No one friends like Gaston, never bends like Gaston, No one breaks the fourth wall at his end like Gaston.

I think Gaston was more than only himself, he represents the relationship of Guts with the ones under his command, in every scene with Gaston there are also a group of men just like him, happy to see Guts or worried about him. Not every member of the band of the hawk could have been a named character, but Gaston is there to remind to us that every single one of them was a person, with personality and dreams. That Guts lived and shared with all of them for countless battles and feast, they were family. So when the eclipse whapped we dont just feel wrong for Guts, Casca, Judeau, Pippin and Corkus; the named characters who suffered it, we feel wrong about the complete band of the hawk, all because Gaston was there to give them a face.

To summarize it, Gaston is basically the Berserk fandom in one person

Gaston is a boss. During the eclipse, he is the last man standing(besides Guts of course). What more proof do you need

Gaston was just like us, the reader, who is a giant guts respecter and fan.

I think Gastons death represents the end of the fantasy of the band of the hawks and finally knocking Griffith off his pedestal of chivalry it was all a lie from the beginning

I’m rereading berserk right now and I’m right before the eclipse and I was just thinking about how much I enjoy Gaston. Campfire of dreams is such a good chapter is it brings life to smaller characters like Gaston while also using them as a way for guts to rethink about his own life

Gaston cleanly consolidated Guts' relationship with the wider band of the hawk into a simple 1 on 1 relationship between 2 men. As time went on, Guts grew closer with Gaston and thus the band, and started treating him/them with more respect, and cared much more for their lives on the battlefield. This presents an interesting parallel to Griffith, who had no such person like Gaston. Griffith only spoke with his best and brightest, and didn't mince words with the average soldiers.

Gaston was a minor character for the hawks, for Griffiths ambitions, and even for the manga, buit he was one of the most important friends to Guts. He never tought of himself of anything but a secondary character in someone else story, But sometimes, being a second in someone's else story isn't bad. Some people aren't mean to have a grandiose story of fortune and glory. Some people want to have a tailoring shop and an unassuming life. That was Gaston.

I never realized that Gaston actually was responsible for the continuation of Berserk. Guess it makes 3 characters wbo saved Guts's life: Gaston, Zod and Skull Knight. Although Skull Night kind of fked Guts over by saving him, should of just left him there and than.

Being second command to Guts in the raiders is far better than being a commander like Corkus. Corkus is out of his league and he knows it. He's all talk and bravado.

I found the last scene shared between Guts and Gaston to be similar to Kratos with the last Spartan warrior to survive the calamities. Maybe it wasn’t an intended similarity by the God of War devs, but it’s interesting to see how characters fueled by rage (and later regretful of it) still have a caring side for the people they respect.

Deep down, we are all Gaston.

Gaston heals Guts in many ways I feel. After what happened with Gambino, Donavan, and Gut's original troop Gaston is the first male figure that genuinely, and positively forms a bond with Guts. (The other bonds are initially to make Guts obey, and fall into line as a soldier) Remember that commander that tries to hire Guts after he slays Bazuso, and how Guts freaks out at being touched by him? yet he's so happy to be chummy, and even hugged by a well intentioned friend like Gaston! It's proof that Gaston was very much a large part of Guts being able to overcome a lot of the mental damage his past trauma inflicted upon him. To have people in your life you can drop your guard down around, and get a normal nights sleep, and know reality will be just as you left it when you wake up is something that is priceless - Guts didn't have this as a boy, and it warped him.

To be honest I always have a bad time differentiating corkus from gaston

I think Gaston stands for the Band of the Hawk. He is a Symbol for the Band of the Hawk. And this is why he is so important. It shows the Conection between Guts and the Band of the Hawk and that Guts finaly find a home . . for a time.

Oh I've always LOVED Gaston and it's always been one of the countless things I admire the most about Miura, that even though such extremely limited screen/page time he manage to make him such a narratively powerful character. In a way Gaston represents ALL the raiders. While ALL the Hawks' deaths are heartbreaking I agree with you 100%, there was always something special about Gaston's. But for some reason I always pretty much thought I'd be alone in thinking all this and not really worthy of a video but MAN you really nailed it, great work! 🫶 Totally worth it. New sub here! I always read Gaston as a token for the rank-and-file of the Band of the Hawk. I got the vibe each squad (regiment? division?) of the band reflected the leadership of the Captains. And because Guts is the type to lead from the front and act as heavy shock cavalry, his men took pride in that. Guts was _their_ guy. So it's a reflected glory type of thing. Like with Griffith, they can't imagine being so great, but it's nice to have a hero. Same with how Casca's men see her as a big sister. Even with Corkus, sure he's a ratfucker, but to his men, he's _their_ ratfucker. They're the little guys in it together to hitch a ride on Griffith's coattails.

I appreciate all of the good videos about non-main characters that people often overlook. Keep up the great work!

I always thought well of him, he did not mind standing in the shadow of someone else glory because thats not what he was about. He may had well been born extremely poor and was greatful for what ever he had, I think him and Guts actually wished the best for each other.

Thanks for this, I just finished the anime about a week ago. Didn't realize he was that important. I've never seen an anime like this with such a bizarre and tragic ending, blew me away, like couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Thanks for this video. Although I have not read the manga, while watching the 1997 series I noticed Gaston as an important minor character. Thank you for analyzing this character in relation to Guts.

Excluding Guts, I think Gaston and Judeau were my favorite band of the hawk characters by far. Pippin followed closely after them i guess Hell, Corkus got on my every nerve, but i even felt bad for him during the eclipse. I miss the -old- *true* band of the hawk ☹️

I actually like gaston when i read the manga the first time, it breaks my heart when he died like that😢

He joined a mercenary group to save money to build a tailoring shop. How many of us has the guts to slowly kill ourselves to try at a dream?

In the grand scheme of things, Gaston may not be recognized as a pivot able character BUT I'd say we felt his death subconsciously (thinking of that video of the guy throwing the book after reading) as readers. We felt Gut's rage, despite him being a 2-d character, following the eclipse and I'm sure we relished the slaughter Guts released on the apostles and of course the moment when Rickert slapped our favorite God.

Can't believe I overlooked Gaston's friendship with Guts because of Griffitih's and Guts's friendship. Now this makes Gastons death to me even more sadder (I mean it was sad before, but not it's much worse 😥). Even if he was literally and saw himself as a minor character, that dude did nothing wrong and didn't deserved to be sacrificed and killed in the end for Griffith's dream to come true. Also guess I'm adding Guts/Gaston to my many Guts ships in this series
