Attack on Titan (SUB) - 3x11 Bystander - Reaction 

Keith's tragedy was that he was just an ordinary man with hopes, ambitions, regret, a lifelong crush, and an inferiority complex. He was someone who eventually gave up on his aspirations because of the pressure, which just shows that not everyone is like or can be like an Erwin, Pixis or Hange - those who readily take up the mantle with self-confidence and lead humanity to progress. I loved how they made Keith such a believable and relatable character despite being this minor side character back in S1. What's great is that he had importance this whole time, we just didn't know it yet! That ending with the twist of Keith purposely sabotaging Eren's gear but failing to prevent him from joining the military (in the end, he really couldn't change anything...he was a bystander after all), and Carla's monologue in general were all so well-executed! The ending credits and song coming in made it that much more emotional and uplifting! I also loved that Eren appears to have come to terms with his past as well as being able to move forward confidently now thanks to what his mom said about him. He may not be "special" in the way he was thinking, but his mom certainly thought he was special simply because he was born. For the first time in a long time, Eren looked at peace with himself and it was a beautiful thing to see. It reminded me of his smile moment back in 3x09. Overall, the character moments and bringing everything full circle (filling in the gaps) with the beginning on Eren's part was just amazing. It's episodes like these, the quiet and slow ones that build up the characters/world/mysteries, that honestly make me appreciate AoT as a whole. I wouldn't love it as much as I did if not for these moments.

Can’t wait for Part 2 of season 3 , it’s on a different level

Keith is one of my favourite characters. And to be clear. He didn't sabotage Eren for any selfish or jealous reasons. He did it to honor Carla. To give Eren a chance to be a normal kid. But nothing could stop Eren, hence his 'bystander' line

One of the best episodes in the series. That line Eren's mom says gets me every time.

Keith Shadis is such an underrated character, it's utterly criminal.

I love that little "boop" sound Courtney's water bottle made at the end of her intro, like a little audible punctuation mark 😆

Keith is one of my favorites, because that's the sort of story a ordinary person would or could have in AoT universe. Most people are not main characters.

Lia: "The fact that they tie all these little storylines together...It's great writing." Hajime Isayama agrees with you; he considers Chapter 71 to be his best.

It is very understandable that Keith lashed out at Carla, imo. He had invested a lot in the scouts for years believing he could change things, he dedicated his life to it (in part he was inspired by what Grisha said about the scouts when they first met), but after years of fighting he was starting to seriously doubt that he had the ability to change anything, and that was eating him up. He wasn't getting any results outside the walls, a lot of people died under him and he was starting to believe it was all for nothing (you can see it in the very first episode of the show, when he breaks down crying when he meets a mother who had lost her son under his command). At the same time all of that was happening, he found out that the person who was his crush for many years, who was married to the guy who gave him what he was starting to see as nothing more than false hope (the belief that he was special and could change things), had had a baby. And on top of that she told him basically that he should quit the scouts, that what he was doing was going to only get him killed and nothing more. You can understand why it was too much for him all at once, so he got defensive and lashed out at her. But what Carla said that there is nothing wrong with just being a normal person had an impact on him, and eventually he let go of his dream and accepted that even though there are special people (Erwin, Grisha, Levi, Hange) he just wasn't one of them, and he ceded his position to Erwin and his team. The reason he tried to prevent Eren from becoming a scout is because in his mind he was saving him from the same mistakes he had made in his own life due to false hope. But when Eren persisted in spite of the sabotage, Keith gave up and once again accepted that he wasn't able to change things, that he was just a witness.
