I've always loved to watch music theory videos. I've also always loved Zelda, particularly BotW/TotK. So your channel brings together both worlds in an awesome way

Just went to comment this! I think this also shows up in Hyrule Castle in Wind Waker (and a few others 2D games too)?

I didn’t remember the Attacking Vah Medoh theme when I played TotK but I’m now realizing that the wind temple theme is almost identical to it. Awesome reference! Wonder if the other temples follow a similar pattern
@ZeldaMusicTheory

Unfortunately I’m covering the best and coolest first, the others have some cool things, but I’d wager the Wind Temple has more references than Fire Water and Lightning combined. We’ll do all of them though, there are cool things in each.

I know the water temple theme references Attack on Vah Ruta, but I'm not sure about the Lightning and Fire temples
@ZeldaMusicTheory
@ZeldaMusicTheory 6 месяцев назад
Yes, there are several references hidden in each temple, but Wind is probably the most, followed by perhaps Lightning, then Water and finally Fire. I may cover each, but honestly Wind is so much more than any of the others it may not be very entertaining to cover the others as solo videos. Always nice seeing your comments Jose!

Brilliant method breaking down these tunes in this order. I can listen to these, continue to beat totk and not have to worry about spoilers. Plus i wanted to just soak up the Rito scenery a bit after the temple. Keep em coming!

You got it! Partly because I’ve been so busy with life and the channel, I’ve hardly been able to play through the game. Haven’t finished yet but I’m probably 75% through. Eventually we’ll cover all of the game but going slowly and in order.

Oh no the video was way to short 😭😂 Cool breakdown, never would have guessed that Rito village has a James Bond easter egg!!! In all seriousness though, when you asked wether the Rito village theme references Revalis theme, or the other way around i think thats literally the chicken or the egg question (pun intended), because Revali is a Rito, so it would make sense that his theme references his hometown, but since he the hero of his village, to whom every child looks up to and who has a plaza named after him in-game, it would also make sense for the Rito village theme to reference his theme, for him being so influencial and inspiring to them.

Very cool point. And I filmed 3 at once but it was over half an hour long so I broke up each theme for Vah Medoh, more to come soon!

HAhaha that’s one of the most nerdy things in my videos. I actually stole that from possibly my favorite Disney movie of all time, severely underrated and phenomenal soundtrack by James Newton Howard… Atlantis. Milo is super nerdy and practicing presenting to the museum board of directors about his Atlantis findings, and he shows a translation error from Ireland, to Iceland. Then he says quietly to himself “Pause for effect.” And a moment later it is revealed that no one is even in the room and he is just rehearsing. I used that in my first ever video Why Zelda Music Sounds Japanese, and it keeps finding it’s way back in. Thanks for the comment!

I love how I‘ve been „wrong“ about the Amin arp being an influence from the Blizzeta theme, rather than Attack on Vah Medoh (which I had forgotten how AMAZING it is). it still might be a small reference, as the ice area themeing and the feel of the arp remind me of Twilight Princess
@ZeldaMusicTheory
@ZeldaMusicTheory 11 месяцев назад
You’re right, and I definitely think it’s both. For sure Attack on Vah Medoh, but also related to the Frozen Rito Village, the boss fight, the snowstorm, all that. It’s very cool.

At 0:55 roughly while played on the piano, it sounds extremely similar to OoT's intro, the first like four notes as you boot up the game. Just I'm assuming pitched down slightly. I'm unsure if the OoT intro is A Minor, or not you'll have to correct me on this. But I have noticed even in-game (Granted I play with low music, but I have really good hearing, to the point where I can track people's location by their footsteps in Apex Legends, in this is off topic.) Point is, Vah Medoh's beginning notes I'm assuming are reminiscing OoT's intro with that beginning cord progression. Beautiful. Also is Koji Kondo still the Musical genius of the Zelda franchise or has that Chair been taken by a new "King of Hyrule" if you will in terms of the OST?
@ZeldaMusicTheory
@ZeldaMusicTheory 3 месяца назад
Just getting around to responding- no the chords are not the same unfortunately. Just both arpeggiated. And Koji Kondo definitely still king, but for his old original compositions. The last soundtrack he composed significantly for was Majora’s Mask. Wind Waker only 2 tracks, Twilight Princess only 1. Crazy.
@ivanheffner2587

My knowledge of music theory is zero-adjacent, so augmented diminished minor major flat five is just a bunch a words. That said, something about some of the .. arpeggiated(?) chords sounds a lot to me like it follows a similar pattern to the dungeon themes of the original LoZ. Maybe that’s just the result of “yeah; it’s an arpeggio. They sound like that.” IDK.
@ZeldaMusicTheory
@ZeldaMusicTheory 11 месяцев назад
Hahaha so the original dungeon theme in Z1 (which I play in one of the Zelda IQ vids, don’t remember which episode) goes 1b35b6 repeating in minor. This theme is also in minor and has a repeating pattern, so it’s not the same exact notes, but it does sound similar.

what botw/totk location would you say has the most musical references?
@ZeldaMusicTheory
@ZeldaMusicTheory 4 месяца назад
Man, all the Rito areas are full of stuff. Wind Temple TOTK is stacked. Hyrule Castle is full as well. The Memories always have several quotes hidden. One video I'll eventually do is the Sonia Zelda memory- it has SO many themes referenced. I'm talking super subtle ones. Like 7 or 8 or something insane. Def worth a video. Great question!

This is entirely unrelated to the content of the video, but I just noticed a cool musical “reference” to Zelda in other media (probably not but it’s still cool). In the story trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man 2 game (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bgqGdIoa52s.html), there’s a sort of musical motif throughout that sounds *very* similar to A Link to The Past’s opening
@ZeldaMusicTheory
@ZeldaMusicTheory 11 месяцев назад
Wow that’s pretty funny, it’s like a mix of the ALTTP Opening melody and the Matrix theme that plays when Neo stops the bullets and it goes b6521 with high strings. Very funny. Thanks for sending this! I actually have a Spider-Man 2 Trailer Breakdown on this channel, but it got very low views. Lots of cool things in it!
