Individual soldiers can be made to disappear if the unit they are surrendering to has a grudge or a mission that becomes complicated by the inclusion of a random surrendering soldier. But when a whole unit larger than a squad surrenders, then the likelihood of everyone following the Geneva convention increases significantly.
