I have the Wallenstein chipper/shredder for my Johnnie 2032R and it is an incredibly well built piece of machinery. I have used it for brush, leaves and tree branches and while I don't use it all the time, when needed it is well worth the price. And thanks to GWT for advancing our tractor education!
We bought a pull behind Leaf collector attachment [it has it's own motor] for our garden tractor with a small chipper on the side, the chipper clogs all the time so we don't use it. Sometimes it's better to buy separate pieces.
I had a Woods 5000 chipper/shredder for several years. Ran it behind a Deere 790 and a 4400. Reckon I owned it for 5-7 years The Woods machine could chip a bit more than the Wallenstein...5" versus 3.0-3.5" Nice implement...and if one need more light brush shredded, a chipper/shredder is the way to go. I probably used the shredder more than the chipper at the time Both the Wallenstein and the Woods are virtually identical in design. The blower was an option on the Woods and a pretty expensive one at that. The chips fell underneath which required lifting the unit and raking them out. I own a chipper now which takes up to 7-8 inches. Don't have the need for a shredder in my present circumstances...but a residential user with plenty of brush might be better served by a chipper/shredder
I bought the Wallenstein BX52R chipper aproximatly four years ago . The quality and performance has been outstanding . Being a power feed chipper it eats anything and I have learned many things about chipping different varieties of wood etc . It will chip leftovers like bark and small chunks leftover from the splitter also and make nice mulch . Variable speed feed is nice controling the end product . My friend has the one with shredder . There great also . One needs too determine what there needs will be over time . For small property and people doing a lot of gardening etc . The shredder chipper is sweet and usally all you ever need . Wallenstein has many choices too pick from too cover all bases . There blades and parts are top quality also . I had a small issue when I bought it . Contacted them and they where right on it and corrected it immediately . They will always get my business . I have never seen a company stand behide there product like they do . Well worth the money 👍
Shredders are great for anything that won't slice nicely into chips. Handfuls of weeds, saplings vines and small things that are more leafy than woody, and things that are rotting. We throw old pumpkins into our shredder, but ours empties out of the bottom instead of through a chute. The shredder also beats the wood chips from the chipper into smaller pieces (if your shredder has a grate). It is not worth your time to try to put your fall leaf piles through a shredder (mow those and/or use a leaf collector).
The Wallenstein site has a tool that allows you to plug in your tractor information and it will display compatible chippers. Based on my input (Branson 2400H) it recommended the BX36S or BX52S. I was already looking at the BX52S at my dealer. Based on the information from Wallenstein and my dealer (who in their defense got their information from Wallenstein) I purchased the BX52S. Paired with my tractor, which had 19 HP at the PTO, I could at most chip 3 inches. Anything larger than that would stall the tractor. I ended buying a larger tractor (40 HP at the PTO) in order to be able to chip at the capacity I needed. I contacted Wallenstein and told them of my experience. They need to revamp their chipper selector to realistically reflect actual chipping capacity vs PTO HP.
Nice video. I have a Silky saw. It is very nice, high quality, cuts great, and seems durable. Sharp enough when new to do some rough cutting of 2x4s even. We’ll see how it ages.
The Chipper Shedder is what I prefer. When shedding it take lots of stuff to dull to hammer, When clipping hardwoods the knifes dull quickly and I plug up the shut lot quicker with small stuff. chipper has little bite larger chips than a shedder output chip is almost like saw shaving.
i have the BX36 as well and the only issues i have with it is when i chip evergreens. The shoot will sometimes clog and you have to shut down the tractor and open up the unit and clean the shoot. Still love it though and great for around the homestead!!
The shredder is great for turning huge piles if autumn leaves into a compact mulch pile. You can shred paper in it too. Just don't put in whole magazines and remember to remove staples for your safety while handling the mulch. No manufacturer I have contacted says cardboard is okay unless it is in smaller pieces (gets wound around the blade axle).
The self feed on gravity feed models is a real point of difference. You can see how often some branch crotches gets stuck. That gets pretty old after a while.
The chipper most often cloggs up the chute when it pulls in thin bendy twigs. That and easier feeding are good reasons to spend more and get a self feeding one.
I've been looking for chippers for my 1025R. Thinking hard about the Woodland Mills WC-46. Hydraulic feed with safety bar, chips up to 4", & has 3 year warranty. Don't like the idea of trying to hand feed one without a hydraulic feed.
I have a woodland mills wc68 I think that's the number but anyway I love it best purchase I've done the quality of them is great and the hydraulic feeder is fool proof I'd say get the woodland mills chipper
I also purchased the Woodmax tm86h for my 1025r. Works like a charm and did a lot of clean up with it. Now I have a 2038R and it still works well. Even better with the extra HP.
I have a ford 5000 diesel about 68 horsepower I think it is I also have a farmall M that I'm going to put a 3 point on to power it soon I hope the ford doesn't even know it back there
Enjoy your videos, on the chippers, it’s a lot of work compared to having a small hot fire if your able to, i know maybe it’s not environmentally friendly.
Man , I love the video of you all working on your new place , but good grief you guys are working just too hard , skid steer and mulching head are a must , 5e 6r or 4 sieries tractor with a 12 or 15 ft cutter next weapon of choice , keep up the great work 👍
Chippers don’t like grapevines. I bet that shredder would do a good job on grapevines. I prefer a chipper with powered in feed rollers. I have a Woodland Mills WC88 on my JD 4320 and it works awesome. But it doesn’t like grapevines!
Hello, Grapevines are one of those very fibery woods and dry. Chippers are mostly useless. Even a schredder has some problems with vines. I mix grass or leaves with my vines to help compact them in the schredder, that helps a lot.
I'm thinking of buying a WC88 to put on the back of my Kubota MX5200. How do you rate it? If we get one it would be chipping tree branches with leaves still attached, mostly.
The chipper is simpler to maintain and less to fix and costs less. For most uses, the chipper will work great. If you do need a shredder, you can always buy/rent a separate gas or electric shredder for quite a lot less money. the other challenge with the shredder is that you do not always want to shred into the same pile you are chipping. For me, I chip material to use the woodchips for our garden beds. I also shred leaves and small materials but that goes to a separate pile for use in the fall to use as an overwinter covering. A long-winded way to say, figure out what you intend to do with the materials first and then pick the equipment that suits your workflow and the area you have.
I reached out to Bora for specs on their wheel spacers. I never received a response. The information that I was looking for was only the weight of the spacers. I wanted to do a comparison of the aluminum vs steel and wanted to calculate ballast weights. But no one at Bora Responded. Just left me hanging.

There are many reasons for why you didn't get theirresponse...typo in your email, spam, time out, kick back, you clicked it by accident and marked read or deleted, maybe your email never even made it to them, etc. Give them a call or send a follow-up. That is indeed the way they work. This is a way to have the automatic safety feature and at the same time the ability to use it intensionally without being in the seat. I good feature from J.D. unfortunately they not only forgot to mention it in the manual but also to sales personnel.
Always wear gloves. The machine can grab the branch & snap it through your hands. This hurts. AND don't reach into the chute to clear a jam. Unless you like being called "Stumpy." Try the Milwaukee 2527-20 M12 FUEL HATCHET 6" Pruning Saw. Easy to use one handed. Small, light, and can cut everything you were doing.
Chippers that take less than 5 or 6 inches are a waste of money. You ran across the same problem with the 3 inch chippers that we all do. You get branches with crotches that exceed the throat of your smaller chippers , you fish them out and then what do you do with them? Get a larger chipper, even for a smaller tractor, and limit the size and feed to make it work.
They're available from Wallenstein, but you end up spending a lot more money. We're confident though that they'll perform as indicated in the specs and if we get one to the shop we'll happily demonstrate in video. However, like you, we think you're project is always going to demand bigger than what you have, so if possible, buy bigger up front.
We didn't. The green one (BX36S) is a chipper only, and the black one (BXM32) has a chipper just like the green one (except for a 1/2" diameter material input difference). So watching the chipper on the black one is like watching the green one at work.
The shredder is only for little stuff one inch or so, and it uses a hammer mill like a garbage disposal. The hammer mill should pulverize the wood, making it much finer than the chipper will. The only real use for a shredder that I can think of is some kind of composting, such as Hugel Culture Composting. the finer material composts faster.
I have to apologize: in my haste to look up the DR yesterday, I must have clicked on an ad and ended up watching a video for a Power King 5" chipper. Then I doubled down in my haste and I didn't have to estimate the size of the log they were chipping, because they labeled it: 6". So they were testing a log bigger than the rating and it was bogging down the machine. Just wanted to amend what I said in my haste.

You're in Michigan complaining about the heat. Really? Yesterday I was cleaning up my range. Thirty minutes into it I looked like I had gone swimming due to the heat and humidity. But just wait. In six months I'll be whining about the cold weather and complaining about one inch of snow. 🤣🤣🤣
Yep, same how I feel when northerners complain about “heat”. I’m in Houston and work outside doing utility locating... 10 minutes and my shirt is wetter than a wet t shirt contestants shirt. 30 minutes I’ve sweat through my pants.
