South Africa has been rocked by widespread unrest since the beginning of July. On the one hand, this unrest has involved unconscionable violence and destruction. On the other, it has revealed a growing desperation taking hold over the nation. I sat down with uGogo Aubrey Matshiqi to analyse the origins of this unrest, and the short term and long term solutions for the country's current crisis. This is Part 1 of a two part series. Part 2 will be released on 15 July 2021.
Please note: this conversation was held on Tuesday 13 July and this is an unfolding situation.

Remove Prof. Sipho Seepe there, he's a factionalist of note that one. If you don't believe me go google his interviews hosted by AfroWorldView/ANN7. Thank you Dr Mpofu and gogo Matshiqi for the excellent discussion. My view is that the little man and the great one among us needs to subject himself to the processes of the law when it is found that he has a case to answer to. Some of us are fortunate that they can afford the best legal minds in the land to help them state their case. There is no good reason to be wiggling to free themselves from the process. This makes the resort to violence unjustifiable. I think justice without mercy is a poor form of justice and I think our justice system is willing and capable of showing compassion. Trouble is when people want things to be done only in their own way.

I do agree that language can be a some sort of barrier, as he relates his analysis as I watch, I feel great despair, and reading comments of the latter I also am fascinated, Zuma is a man who's used this law to his advantage, appeal after appeal to face trial and man who established the state capture commission and the judge who preside over it, and dares not to listen to it, amassed a group of people to fight for him, escalated to what we see now. And an analysis of such magnitude is refreshing? Sure I probably have a cola in ur had and about to have a shower, I don't have either of those

But, I want to specifically APPLAUD you for being brave enough to come forward and strip yourself naked when you put yourself right at the center of language quagmire. The media has made us believe that Zuma is our one and ONLY problem and there is no room for alternative views. My fear is that the status quo will remain in this country and black people will never have economic power. This is a missed opportunity to address the socio economic ills in our communities instead we are protecting capitalism and failing to hold the current government accountable.

I'm frustrated with our country, the social ills we started experiencing Post 1994 are self-inflicted. Leadership became okay with greed, inequality and they pushed it through the lack of rebuilding good habitable communities for black people, forming selfish alliances between school and labor unions, lacking the vision to create tangible changes for land ownership. What kind of democracy is this where a majority of its citizens go hungry, unemployed, lacking another source of income faced with a bleak future? We need new leadership with a pragmatic vision. UGogo is correct, SA is running with a single story, forgetting the many social ills that led to the ugly actions that took place in the country in the passed few days.

Sizwe first of all I'm a great admirer of your interviews and of your father too, you are right the country is obsessed with the sins of the Zuma tenure up to the point where they fail to see sins that are currently taking place. I was listening to the DG of JZ's presidency and believe me it made me rethink some of the things that happened during the Zuma tenure. I'm not pro Zuma but that doesn't make me a Cyril person either in fact I think Ramaphosa when it comes to being a president material in an African country he is worse than Zuma the only difference is that he is more educated than Zuma is. Anyway keep up the good work Young blood.

I personally think the constitution needs changing so does the political framework and subsequently the Electoral act.Lastly the non existence of black civil society movements is one where I feel black people need to take blame as much as I think much of the apportionment of blame goes to the government for the former 3. Completely enjoyed this discussion, I am impatiently waiting for part two! I relate to the sentiments you shared about the state of the “looters”. I was uncomfortable with the lack of empathy for the dire economic situation of the protesters live. I don’t think the more privileged side of society do not realise how poor our poor is hence it’s so easy to use harsh words like “rowdy” “barbaric” etc Poverty is humiliating and I don’t see why that doesn’t become part of the bigger conversation of what happened over the past few days instead of just the looting. I remembered Jamil’s F. Khan’s words about middle classness being an illusion, that if one wrong move will send you tumbling back at the bottom again then is it really existent? And so I noticed this fear of “the one wrong move” at play among this class of people during discourse. On the last part, I can only imagine how frustrating it is be misconstrued or even dismissed purely because your father is Adv. Mpofu. Because you have a lot going for yourself and achieved so much, as well as are within your own right to have an opinion on political matters, I believe it is unfair to constantly be reduced to just “Dali Mpofu’s son”. It’s the assumption that because you are his son you automatically share the same politics I find off putting…and even if you do (that’s besides the point) I don’t think it should be accompanied with so much bullying and scrutiny! I saw Wenzile Madonsela go through a similar kind of bullying as well!

I have no words, no words at all to salute this kind of view at a time when a thoughtless view is dominant. Only a few people can think logically and thoughtfully debate such issues without having a bias to who they hate or love. Not to mention, it took years of compounded bad events such as having a pass rate of 30% implemented to create illogical thoughtfulness to the benefit of the implementers, only to have that implementation turn on them. SA is always on the verge of something like this, all thats needed is a TRIGGER, in this case its Former Pres. Zuma, because people have alot of thoughts and anger that they want to express as a result of not being heard. The very same case is happening now when Leaders are not listening to the people but think the people are mindless beings.

You'll never be more internally conflicted as an "educated" black in South Africa. You're torn between your academic self (a European/foreign indoctrination according to most and being seen as "civilized" by whites ) versus the collective black experience (knowing what poverty is)...The statement "One is implicated in the discomfort of others through one's own comfort/privilege". really hits home. South Africa is too complicated.

He was treated with a soft hand, even the excuses he gave for Zondo to recuse himself were dripping with arrogance. He was treated with the "English" privileges' that uGogo speaks off. I can accept the argument that they could have given him a lighter sentencing but not that he should not have been sentenced as being contempt of is given to one showing disobedience to that court. Which if we are honest, Jacob Zuma certainly was.

Your avatar is a chess board. But you fail to grasp that Zuma's arrest has nothing to do with justice, whether he was sentenced 10 days or 10 years

@@sanelisiwedlamini7142 Im WIDE awake my dear. As for how other races step over us, its because we still dnt understand that the systems that exist, monetary system, justice system ect. are a game we all must play. Your strategy defines the outcomes. uZuma thought his privilege and status ment he cn introduce his own rules and got trapped in his own web of design. All he had to do was to attend the commission en keep saying I dnt know or im not sure. Thn thath would be that. He started this commission, he chose Zondo so he shot himself in the foot en forgot to play the game.

Hi Sizwe, love your show man! Can't wait for part 2. On a different note could you please have an audience with a white and/ colored guest just to find out their views as I strongly feel that they are blinded by ignorance or lack of sympathy. To them, this whole thing is about Zuma, criminality and black people losing their minds and not knowing what they're doing. I had a big debate with colleagues, I even replied in saying: "Anyone is bound to lose their minds, resort to crime or a rebellion when facing poverty and oppression. Even your own dog could end up eating you one day if you don't feed it and give it attention.". I mostly work with afrikaans people in Stellenbosch. I strongly feel that white people don't understand the magnitude of the damages their ancestors caused to our black nation (after our ancestors welcomed them and shared their food and lands with them). Sad thing is that the government is not doing much in this regard, even the school syllabus undermines this. BTW, I listened your mom's interview on Morning Live and she gets it. I'm certain that many of our problems would be solved if this issue is addressed and the land question would not even be a question.

I just listened to this conversation I liked it. But as a person who never liked Zuma, I think I've not really looked deep at the flaws of Current President and there many even as many as Zuma's blunders. I think I'm biased towards Zuma. The Problem with us South Africans now, Today 20/07/2021 is The rule of African National Congress .
