Audeze LCD-4 Review

I had LCD-2C on my head a few days back and I have to say Audeze is amazing. Any of their models from LCD line are so comfy! It's like you're putting your ear in a spacious room and nothing inside touches it. Sound is very detailed, awesome mids & vocals, this warm signature is great for jazz and classical

Great visualization of looking up in space with the start shining through (3:40). The LCD4 creates a great fabric of space that ties together all the musical objects in a really satisfying way. And these musical objects are dense and rounded and full of substance. Again, fine review! 'enjoyed it a lot. Yep it's heavy, but it involves a commitment to a super engrossing listening session that pays off incredibly well. Each session is memorable. I recall the great sound for a long time afterwards. (True about the LCD3. I love the LCD4 highs. No fatigue on the LCD4, but sweet and real.)

This has to be one of the best headphone reviews I have ever watched. Seriously man. I’ve watched hundreds of reviews over the years and I wish they could be this elucidating. Great job.

Kudos Josh, as a LCD4 owner I would say this is a pretty fair and accurate review (and yes I did get the stars thing lol). However I will add, if you get the chance, have a listen to them with top tier equipment. I partner them with a Luxman P-750u hp amp and a Luxman D-08u sacd player. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you hear...

exsquisite camera quality

I love my LCD-4z headphones. Very 3Dimensional headphone with super deep imaging. They are warmer than my LCD-ax’s, but not too warm. The LCD-x sounds more 2D, while the LCD-4 and 4z is very much an enveloping sound. Also, despite only being 15 Ohms, the 4z’s need a good quality headphone AMP. The Chord Hugo 2 pairs wonderfully with the 4z. Another thing with the 4 and 4z is that you need to turn up the volume higher than the LCD-X, to achieve their full potential and range. Oddly enough the increased volume on the 4z does not equate to any uncomfortable level of sound. It’s like the 4z requires more power to drive the technology inside them than the LCD Xs. Anyway, that’s my personal experience with my Audeze LCD-4z and LCD-X. Thanks!

I heard LCD4 at Can Jam 2018 in NYC. I heard them on a popular, (but I forget what it was!) $3k balanced amp, I heard them on Audeze's Dekard amp.. And I heard them on the Violectric v281. On the first two amps, they had the very classic, Audeze sound. Very gooey, warm, lush. If I wasn't paying attention, I could think them muddy at a glance, but all the detail is there when I focused on them. I found that the LCD4 really had that special something.. Joshua maybe right that they don't have the most technically superior sound stage. However, I found that they had a really amazing way of making each individual sound stand in its own space and have a very, real, 3D sense to it. I found that they were able to bring out the dynamics, even in overly flat recordings. I listened to a bit of metal that I like, but that uses too much compression and always sounds like a flat wall of sound.. Well, the LCD4 brought me right up on stage next to the lead singer and I could feel where each other band member was positioned. I actually looked down to make sure I was still seated in my chair. So, I didn't mention the v281 yet. I don't know what goes on inside that thing.. It stripped away all the lush goo and made the LCD4 sound like an electrostat, with the speed and razor precision I had just been exposed to in the STAX room... Yet, with all the base and body and depth you expect from a flagship planar. And with such sheer power of delivery. I can't properly explain it. This combination completely blew my mind. It was almost $9k worth of kit including the DAC. If I could spend that money on audio gear with a clear conscience, it would be on my desk right now.

I took my frist steps in the world of high quality headphones 3 months ago with an Audeze LCD-2 Closed Black and I fell in love with what it delivers and the confort. I do not feel it at all on my head. I almost have it on my head all day when I'm home. I already owned an Audeze Mobius for gaming and I already was impressed by the quality of the sound it delivers so yeah, Audeze seems to fit my tastes. Now I want to go further and still hesitating between the LCD-4 and the Focal Utopia (even though I do not own a Focal Headphones, I have the Aria 948 and am very pleased with the Focal Sound). Thanks to you, I tend to choose the LCD-4 but I guess I'll need more time to be sure. Due to Covid and restrictions here in France, I can't go at a reseller to try both. :( Anyway, thanks forr your reviews, I like them!

About the highs: that definition of having a dark background with the highs "there" but only if you seek for them really applies to my 2016 LCD 2. Is it a better tuned LCD 2 then?

The "dark" description is exactly what I heard with the LCD 2 and the reason why I replaced it with the LCDX. Even with the LCDX, the true sparkle of the highs require tone control like Schiit Loki. For reference I usually max the bass and treble on the Loki for the LCDX (high end is more variable but usually turn it up a touch).

Could not get past the chasm at 4kHz and heat at 10kHz, so I sold them to fund a speaker amp/HE-6 setup. Do not regret it one bit.

Hello, would you recommend upgrading from Lcd-3? For music listening only. lcd-3 has that relaxed sound. lcd4 should be even more precise. is there also this musical and pleasant charm? Thx

I don't really think you're crazy at all describing the bass though, despite measuring very similarly on most graphs I've seen, for some reason the Xs and 3s and 4s all needed different bass shelves when I was EQing them to get to around the same level of punch.

Any possibility of the verum one showing up in a review?

Any chance of seeing a comparison video between LCD-X and LCD-4? I'd be curious in the differences to see if the LCD-4 is personally worth the upgrade. Oh, LCD-4 vs LCD-24 comparisons are also impossible to find at the moment and we always appreciate your perspective Josh!

I agree with you and this review but tonality wise these are only correct up until the treble. Since the 4-6khz region is dipped and the upper treble 6-8 khz is boosted there is a missing balance with cymbals and violins. In that regard i find the he 1000 v2 better.

I've got a riddle for you all. How come this gets frequently sold for 715 on German amazon used, in 'like new' condition? It looks fishy as hell, but there are reputable sellers among them, and this isn't an isolated case, as I mentioned it happens frequently. So, just out of curiosity, what's going on?

@ Joshua Valour the most important thing you did not point out putting is this headphone on head over 6hr will bring you serious headache due to too much mid and base. it is not about tonality or everyday use, heft of mid and base is blowing you away into serious headache over hours, not even mentioning the real weight of LCD4. For everyday use you have to manually eq it to make it sound like balanced.

I also auditioned LCD4 and Stax 009 in my local high fi store. I preferred LCD4 I THOUGHT THEY WERE PUCHNY AND BASSY AND CLEAN DETAIL. LCD4 IS extremely heavy AND THATS WHY THE PRICE IS GOING DOWN ON THEM. NOW ON STAX 009 THEY ARE VERY COMPORTABLE I COUDN'T BELIEVE IT. ARE THEY GOOD THEY ARE BUT THEY ARE NOT WORTH THAT MUCH.

OK. So like your reviews... Can't say I love them...yet...But i do see the potential. My free two cents: 1. Close the aperture a little... Sometimes the texture isn't visible like that on the HP when you were showing the rose wood color... Very shallow DoF there; 2. Always... Always mention the Amp requirements when reviewing a Planar Magnetic Headphone; and 3. Love your color themes... But a dark background isn't always as appealing... Just check out MKBHD's backgrounds...they look more fun. Best of luck!
