As Z Reviews would say..."FFFFFFFF". I also wanted to mention that although the HD 800 does come close in detail in the treble, the 6k peak still tries to force its way through any EQ applied, which hurts its ultimate resolving ability a bit, especially for those who prefer my taste. That said, of course the LCD-4 is an excellent example in diminishing returns...it's better to me overall, but at over 4x the price msrp than what HD 800s are going for on the used market now, that's a big investment.

I know hd800 is best bang for buck in resolution, I tried to listening many little nuances moving from 6xx but I couldn’t yet hear God with those. I’m hoping I can hear God with these LCD4s and their ultimate FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF resolution

I’ve been using the lcd 4 for a year now and I’ve found this review to be pretty spot on, though I think my unit might have an even more wonky frequency response than the one you had. The upper mids are severely recessed and >10khz is so boosted that it makes for a sound signature that’s both dark and sibilant. Voices sound like they have a veil and a hard edge simultaneously. But you were goddamn right about eq, if you fix the fr this headphone will blow your mind. The detail is insane, there’s absolutely no grain (compare it to anything midfi the difference is astonishing) and the bass is nuts even without a shelf. I tried out your eq as well as Oratory’s and ended up preferring yours - the latter was a bit shouty for my taste. My only gripe with the lcd 4 is all the damping that was done to tune it. This makes it sound a bit dry as opposed to something that’s basically got no damping like the L700 though that estat has a bunch of its own problems… Awesome review Metal, I’m glad I followed your recommendation and picked this up!

Damn Chat Closed just when I answered my technical take on the detail and resolution of a pair of cans... As I said before (or tried), Transient speed (and thus, detail retrieval) are mostly linked to high-frequency response, the bigger the bandwidth the faster the transients and thus, better resolution (if the FR is consistent). Although we humans can only listen up to 20k at most, a system that has a bandwidth bigger than that would produce better transients. That's Why the step response in the headphones is actually a really good and complementary tool to the FR graph, since One The Step response can show the behaviour in super high frequencies, and two, because FR graphs are pretty unreliable above 10k.

The extra energy you hear at 500 to 1k could be an artifact of the modern pop cd mastering practice of brickwalling the music signal.. This style of mastering to me sounds what like you are describing. The industry standard is substandard IMHO. Almost all jazz and classical is pretty well mastered. A quick easy way to SEE exactly how a song is mastered is run the track through an audio editing program like Audacity or AVS audio editor. I bet what I just stated does not apply to the music you use to evaluate, though. Excellent review as usual.
@andrasnelhiebel6726
@andrasnelhiebel6726 5 лет назад
Not really. Audeze LCDs have a smaller than required running up between 500 and 3,5k (about 3-4 dB is missing at 3,5k), which our ear percieves as an overly exaggerated 500 to 1k sound thus making it sound a bit nasal. I recognized this problem a long time ago as well as I am not a fan of this tuning. This can also to a lesser extent can be found in the MrSpeakers AEON Closed and the K550. Check their graps. What you mean though is real with pop mastering but it is more on the 2-6k region, which is elevated to give further percieved volume. Lots of modern pop music uses it, and I hate it. But it is an equalized effect not a compression effect. If you want an example that is heavily compressed but lacks the lift in the upper mids check Beautiful World from Hikaru Utada (Evangelion 1.0)

@metal571
@metal571 9 месяцев назад
Heard it at length at a quiet environment and it just doesn't hold up. There's too much tradeoff in detail vs the full LCD-4. I just wish they offered the LCD-4 in the 4Z chassis as a standard option, but supposedly you can custom order it that way if you want, which is what I almost did once
@ThreeDogShow

@@metal571 so the LCD-4z is more rolled off than the LCD-4? Are they both just as dark and musical? Can you explain the differences please. Thank you for answering btw. It’s very much appreciated.
@metal571
@metal571 9 месяцев назад
Actually the frequency response is about the same. It's everything else that is different, just less detail overall. Detail is not brightness or darkness, it's an independent aspect of sound the way I hear it. So they traded off this without changing the overall response to get extra efficiency.
@ThreeDogShow
@ThreeDogShow 9 месяцев назад
@@metal571 so they are both not bright correct? Both darker profiles? Last question I swear, and thank you for your kindness and answering so much.
@metal571
@metal571 9 месяцев назад
Here's where it gets more annoying. It depends on the pads. The original pads which this unit had from about 2016-2017 are quite dark. Then there was a stealth pad rev in 2018 that ruined that balance and they became too airy, too much above 10k. This has since been sorta-corrected by another pad revision in late 2020 coinciding with the LCD-X revision at that time but I still think they're too airy now and this can be too bright sometimes. It's frustrating but that's been my experience. No idea if any more pad revisions have come out since then

Its very interesting how different people experiences of these are - right off the bat, I found the bass a massive disappointment; it was well controlled, which was to be expected, but it had no power, kick, dynamics or weight to speak of, like most Audezes, short of the LCD-X. I over all just found the headphons shrill/painfully bright, thin sounding compared to even the HD800; and with rather minor EQ I could get similar sound out of the 800, except with better dynamics/punch and soundstage. I don't know if it has something to do with the different versions/iterations/batches of the LCD-4 or whats going on.

Metal, at 4:30 you used the tonality of the 6XX as your reference sound. If I recall, weren't you using the 660S as your reference? Why the change?
@metal571
@metal571 5 лет назад
I still have the 660S but as I believe I said in my review of it, even though it slightly out resolved the 600 I was using before that, the treble tone was slightly off, a bit more metallic but only a bit. The 6XX retains the same treble timbre the 600 has, but is slightly warmer. Hopefully that makes more sense. All of these Senns are quite close sounding in reality

@metal571
@metal571 4 месяца назад
4Z is fundamentally worse, but I have no idea what the 2024 version sounds like. My favorite LCD-4 is the one before the 2018 pads ruined the FR of all Audeze headphones, and the pad that replaced that which shipped with the latest LCD-X revision still didn't bring back quite the original balance struck by the 2015-2017 pads

Hey Metal I've got a used LCD4 heading my way and in order to avoid the usual "meet your hero disappointment" I would like to prepare a couple of "proven" EQ-settings. I'm using Roon PEQ on a Mac so no EqualizerAPO for me. I will however try to transfer your settings to Roon-EQ. Oh yeah, those filter numbers don't mean anything and you can ignore them. The settings within each matter, that's all. This review I believe was also done with pads that are 2 revisions old now. It's critical you know whether you have the pre-memory-foam pads which I believe this one I reviewed has, or the memory foam pads which are basically terrible FR wise and ran from 2018-Nov 2020, and then the "2021" pads were introduced that are more like the pre-memory-foam pads after that

All Audeze LCD headphones have a somewhat narrow soundstage, although the LCD-4 is trying to veer away from that, but also providing a roomy feel due to its lower frequencies preference. 17:50 Kind of shocking how important EQ becomes once you develop the ability to detect nuance within a frequency response. Seems like higher end gear struggles with peaks and valleys just as much as mid fi does.
@metal571
@metal571 5 лет назад
Exactly. I think many people don't understand just how special the tuning of the Sennheiser HD 6x0 series is. Basically nothing else I've ever heard has as smooth and a total lack of peaks and valleys as that series, no matter what the price is.
@bigyeetus2866
@bigyeetus2866 5 лет назад
@@metal571 It's particularly why venturing into TOTL territory is hard for me, regardless of how blown away I am by details and driver capability, I still yearn for the smoothness and inoffensive sound of the 650. I'm hoping the HD 800 (or S variant haven't made up my mind yet) takes as kindly to EQ as everyone says just so I can have detail and a smoother frequency response, while maintaining the comfort of a more lightweight headphone with low clamp force.
@metal571
@metal571 5 лет назад
It does. I've owned my 800 for a long time now and it always surprises me how well it works with EQ. You're watching the right channel if the 650 is your cup of tea as that is my tonality reference for mids and treble, though I prefer a bit less upper mids than that
@bigyeetus2866
@bigyeetus2866 5 лет назад
@@metal571 I've always preferred this channel over others because of the analytical approach to measurements and incorporation of EQ with every review, not bothering to use EQ just feels like handicapping the sound potential of a headphone and I've done enough research to know that I'm never going to find another headphone that will sound like the 650 without EQ, and as much as I try, my ears will not accustom comfortably to any other sound profile (particularly that with more treble). It's crazy how important comfort is (whether it be physical or auditory) to enjoyment of music and sound.
@metal571
@metal571 5 лет назад
@@bigyeetus2866 Sounds like you are quite far along in this hobby now. It took me years to piece all of that together and accept that EQ is not something to shy away from and that the Sennheisers are still unbeaten in tone, doesn't matter how expensive stuff gets. Here's to hoping someday we will finally get the HD 900 we are all waiting for, with the original 6x0 tone, LCD4 resolution, HD 800 or better soundstage, and significantly improved bass extension. I've been wanting that since I started this hobby

I wonder the sound difference between the LCD-4 and the LCD-4z? i know the 4z are lighter and easier to drive but how are different in sound? Has anyone heard both back to back on the same setup?
@metal571
@metal571 4 года назад
They compromise both stage and detail down to somewhere around LCD-X level in my experience. Not really recommended for 4 grand IMO. I heard them at home but didn't really deem them worthy of a review. What Audeze needs is to put the magnesium chassis on the full LCD4 and offer that as a lightweight non wood model

Hello, That's now 3 days my old Logitech G230 headset broke, and I would like to buy another one. I've already bought the Sennheiser Game Zero, but I returned it, because it has literally no bass. I want to use it for gaming ( all types of games ) and also listening music ( all kinds ). I know there's already a lot of threads like this, but I want an headset with good bass ( not like the game zero, where I couldn't hear/feel basses at all ). I do still think that Sennheiser headsets are really good, since everyone around me says so ^^'. So I would need recommendations : I don't know if the Logitech G230 was an opened or closed headset, because I don't really realise what is the difference between these two. Even tho I know that with an opened one you heard people and you don't with a closed one. I also really don't like hearing myself talking like I was with the Game Zero. So, I would need some help choosing a headset, and my budget is at ~200€ ( I can go a bit higher if it's for really good quality, but please help, that's already 3 days I haven't stopped searching :c ). Thanks, Noxeal PS : I've also heard about Beyerdynamic, but the headset I found needed a really good dac and I don't want to spend that much money ( it was the DT 990 PRO )

While lcd4 is technically better than lcd-mx4, I'd still go for lcd-mx4 for 3 reasons. Firstly, it is cheaper.Secondly, it's 90% of lcd4's capability. Lastly, mx4 is easier to drive. Hence saving you significant amount of dollars for amps. Bonus:Lighter.

At the end of the day enjoying music is what it is about that's why I appreciate the LCD-4 an infinite time over the hd800. Also, try with a more capable amp/ dac? Try playing those LCD-4s out of your phone they will sound terrible, your $2k headphone limit is based on the best you've heard and hearing stuff at meets always sounds poor. Reaching the full musical potential requires optimisation on most aspects of the chain. A lot of the tuning you perceive is related to the synergy of your equipment which can massively change from equipment to equipment, the LCD-3 are like the HD650 on steroids.
@metal571
@metal571 5 лет назад
You know that price of the equipment and performance are not directly related I hope, right? The THX 789 is far and away one of the closest headphone amps to being a "wire with gain" that have ever been designed. It sounds more than fantastic, and the LCD4 sounds just as it measures when used with this amp - definitively imperfectly in terms of FR.
