Audi A4 window regulator. Window won’t go up or down - fix

HOW TO FIX A STUCK WINDOW
This is a detailed video showing exactly how to replace the window regulator on an Audi A4 B7 Cabriolet convertible. The process involves removing the window switch, door panel, glass, wing mirror and speakers. When the window regulator starts to go bad, the window may not go up or down fully and may get stuck. The first signs of a faulty window regulator is a crunching and noisy sound when you operate the window and you may notice the window does not go up the last few millimetres when you close the door. The end of the video shows where to get the part from, the part number and the basic tools you will need for this job. Here is a list you may want to print off to help you with the job:
HOW TO REMOVE DOOR PANEL
First lower the window if possible
Remove door trim to reveal 4 screws
Remove 2 TX30 and 2 TX20 screws
Remove door switch to reveal TX30 screw
Undo TX20 screw from bottom of door panel
Unclip door panel - but NOT all the way
Unclip thin door mirror/tweeter wire
Unclip door handle mechanism
Unclip window motor wire
Remove door panel all the way
HOW TO REMOVE DOOR GLASS
Carefully remove top part of door foam by cutting away contact adhesive
Undo three TX30 screws holding window motor and allow to dangle
Push in the three plastic tabs which hold inner mechanism to door frame
Use marker pen to draw round clamps holding window glass to regulator
Undo TX30 and TX20 screw holding in window glass
Remove white plastic clip on right of window glass
Slide out window glass completely
HOW TO REMOVE WING MIRROR
Undo 1 x 10mm nut holding top right of window regulator
Unplug tweeter
Unclip tweeter mesh
Remove Phillips screw holding tweeter trim and remove trim
Remove TX20 screw holding top right of window regulator to mirror
Take out rubber trim from channel on right side of window regulator
Peel this rubber trim over triangular section of window mirror
Remove 2 x TX30 screws hidden behind rubber door seal
Unclip first two clips holding wing mirror wires to door panel.
Wiggle door mirror and slide up to remove and allow to dangle
HOW TO REMOVE WINDOW REGULATOR
Undo 2 x 10mm nuts holding bottoms of window regulator
Remove top part of rubber trim along top of door.
Unclip two white clips holding window regulator wires to door frame
Unclip green clip holding window Regulator wire to door frame
Remove this clip from old regulator by cutting cable tie
Remove old window regulator through centre of door frame
You may have to remove window scraper to get old regulator out
Installation is the reverse process BUT you will need to cable tie one green clip to wire on new regulator

@MikesMercsAndOtherCars - I did exactly what you said I shouldn't do... keep driving the car when you see signs of the window failing. My window failed away from home after putting the roof down in a mild January winter's day. Came back to a rainy 5 days typical for the UK. Kept the car on the drive with a shower curtain over it and was absolutely desperate. Your video gave me the confidence to shop for the window regulator (brand new from eBay). Followed your instructions step by step (pausing and rewinding). Took me 3 hours on a wonderful Saturday afternoon. Missed all the football but what an absolute star and life saver. 5 star for your step by step instructions and presentation. CHEERS!

Great video but I couldn't do it so will need to go garage for this. Just one question from me. Does the whole regulator need replacing even if you can hear the mechanism winding?

Hi - I'm intrigued to know why you couldn't do it - what problem did you run into? Usually the whole regulator mechanism is replaced but, I believe it is possible to get repair kits. See ebay item number 111505222063. Mike

Thanks for your comment. I was just driving this car down to Cornwall on the hottest day of the year and thinking how nice it was that the window now worked. Hope you get yours sorted - looks daunting but it is do able. Mike

Hi Mike, thanks for message. Don't understand me wrong, I don't looking whose can fix my car, I may just need some advice and I'm fixing my self. If I can't, I'll go to the garage 😊. Also I have merc w123( not convertible 😢) it's stud in my drive way for around 8 years now 😮😅. ( I'm working just round the corner, you'll definitely know precision profiles isn't?? 😅😅😅

Hi - with a mercedes R107 i might be able to offer some useful help but I am certainly no expert on the Audi A4. When something breaks on this car, I try to work out how to fix it and film the process to help other people with the same problem. Thankfully the roof still works! You should get that W123 working before it rusts away. Do you mean that you work at Precision Profiles....or did you mean you live near to it? Mike

Great and helpful video. Thanks. My left hand drive (USA) B7 Cabriolet has a door rattle coming from the passenger (right hand side) door that I suspect may be related to the window regulator assembly. In my quest to correct this condition, I have removed the door card and carefully cut the adhesive holding the foam panel, hoping I would find something obvious that could be blamed for the noise I have not. Any suggestions of what I should be looking for that could be a source of the rattle? I think some part of the regulator assembly was affected (got un-clipped??) after the parked car was sideswiped causing visible exterior damage to the door. At first, the rattle was only occasional As time progressed, the rattle is now nearly constant when in motion on almost every road surface. The window goes up and down flawlessly and the rattle sounds the same no matter what position the window is in from fully open to fully closed and anything in-between. Appreciate any suggestions before i embark upon removing then reinstalling the full assembly;y as if i was doing the full job the video shows. Thanks.

I hate those annoying rattles! The most obvious source of the rattle would have been the glass rattling on the metal fittings that keep it in place. See 7.30 in the video. Sometimes the white plastic wedge breaks and falls into the bottom of the door. It is worth checking to see if anything is lying down there. Let em know how you get on. Mike

Thanks for your comment - I always show where I got the parts and how much they cost at tghe end of my videos. This is shown at 21.57 in the video - make sure you get the right part - I made the mistake of buying a cheap one first and it didn't fit. Mike

Help please. The window test after fitting the new window mechanism was not great as the window went up a bit and then went back down. I took it apart again to check if I have done anything stupid and tried again… now none of the windows are working. What have I done.

@@MikesMercsandothercars well sadly, not perfectly. The window runs perfectly well now but it comes back down again after hitting the top position and tends to take itself back to a half way position. I can toggle the switch and tease the window to a top and parked position but its not ideal.

@@paddymirams6657 Assuming we are talking about the drivers window, when the window is all the way up, what happens when you hit the down switch briefly (eg don;t hold it) Does the window go down properly....? Might be that the motor and wire are not correctly positioned. Mike

Thanks for your comment. That is a common problem. In the first instance, I would try a new passenger door window switch. Look on ebay they are not that expensive. Mike

Thanks for your comment. The window regulator mechanism featured in this video came as one as one unit and there is no need to attach or detach any cables. It is possible to just buy the cables and try and fix these into the existing framework - is that what you are trying to do? If so let me know exactly which part of the cable you are trying to remove - eg give me a time code in the video. Mike
