The Audi A8 TDI is a fantastic road car with loads of features, oodles of luxury, and a brilliant diesel engine that's well suited to the genre. And, thanks to a large fuel tank, it has tons of range. We test the range by visiting some of the world's largest roadside objects and find out how many we can see on one tank before we run dry.

In Europe diesel fuel is just a little bit cheaper than gasoline and around 40% of cars are powered by diesel. I drive 2003 Audi A6 1.9TDI. On one tank of fuel (18.5 gallons) my range is around 920-930 miles driving 60mph on a cruise control which means 50-51MPG on the highway. Normal freeway driving with speed of 70-80mph means 740 miles of range (40MPG).

A much bigger tank, bigger vehicle, just not even remotely comparable. Let's hear your MPG, your engine displacement and power, your gear and final drive ratios and your drag coefficient so we can work out the actual engine efficiency.

It's a 2014 freightliner cascadia evolution. It has a Detroit Diesel DD15 560hp@1800 rpm and 1850ft-lbs@1100rpm. Has a variable turbo with turbo compounding energy recovery system. Has a 15 speed overdrive gearbox with a .76 overdrive and 3.42 rear gears. The engine is still in break in but I am getting 10.76 mpg life average as of now. Freightliner doesn't give the drag Coe of the tractor.

36mpg highway rating at 23.8 gallons, the 2014 A8 TDI's range based on EPA numbers comes down to 857 miles. The 2014 accord hybrid on the other hand with its 45mpg EPA highway rating and 15.8 gallon tank gets you 711 miles, but you only need 3 more gallons in the accord hybrid to match the Audi's EPA highway range, albeit with maybe less features and no spare tire. Half of the idea that "diesels get long range" simply comes from diesel cars having larger fuel tanks, and with modern hybrid technology this advantage has really been eroded... not to mention dieselgate
@yanDeriction
@yanDeriction 8 лет назад
Actually, the facts are that A) Hybrids have slightly higher production emissions but B) Hybrids have lower lifetime emissions than their non-hybrid equivalents, as in, hybrid diesels are more efficient and pollute less than plain diesels as well. The accord hybrid has a 1.3kwh battery, lithium ion's energy density is 200wh/kg, which means the accord hybrid will have 7kg/16lb of lithium in its battery pack. What're the emissions that go into manufacturing 16lb of lithium in a battery pack weighing less than 100lb? Certainly less than the 9mpg difference over a car's lifetime.
@dzelpwr
@dzelpwr 6 лет назад
Well, then compare apples to apples. You want a FOUR cylinder MID SIZE sedan comparo, go look at the Passat TDIs that were sold through 2015. I have numerous customers and friends and a family member who owned them and on long highway trips the cars legitimately get 50 MPG. Combine that with a 17 gallon fuel tank and what do you get? You get a car that walks all over your Accord Hybrid for range, and it's a bigger car, arguably more comfortable and has quite a lot of torque, effortless passing on the highway that doesn't require downshifting (because the diesel makes prodigious amounts of low and mid range torque), keeping the cabin noise to a minimum. The A8L is basically a limo. The rear seats have more leg room and just as many features as the front seats. It also has a V6 instead of a 4 cylinder and makes 100 horsepower more than the 4 cylinder diesel and 400 ft-lbs of torque... and it still gets 37 MPG highway.

What do Americans refer to with "Clean Diesel"? Is it different from the one offered on the rest of the world, or is it just marketing?
@amduser86
@amduser86 10 лет назад
well, it's just marketing. it's how audi calls the eco versions. anyway, i do not see the point of this show. that is neither madness or unexpected. this cars are build to drive throw germany at high speeds on one tank of fuel. does not matter if audi, bmw or mercedes. when i had my e91 320d, i once drove it from berlin to monaco (about 800 miles) on tank of fuel. that way more demanding then this trip.

@Dickmaisters
@Dickmaisters 10 лет назад
amduser86 Yeah, clean diesel is a oxymoron little bit. I have very similar experience with 320d xdrive E92 - I stoped to refuel after 1200km/750miles on the way from Prague to Dubrovnik, just because I had to pee. You can go forever with modern diesel and not small tank. But thats like the only one pro of diesels. My next car is going to be a petrol, for sure.

Clean diesel refers to Audi diesels which have a Urea/AdBlue tank which is used to scrub the exhaust emissions(much like in a truck). This is in contrast to alot of European diesel cars which feature a DPF system.

@koovidsrcool
@koovidsrcool 9 лет назад
All these dumb comments about how people have 1 liter miserable diesel economy cars that have further ranges, thinking that makes this audi a waste of money clearly don't understand. This is a huge heavy luxury German sedan, heated and cooled seats, room in the back seats, all sorts of gizmos and gadgets, wonderful performance and still gets astonishing mpg for how little it compromises, which is basically a pointless 4 second 0-60 time which can only be used like once or twice a day getting on the freeway to and from work, only to have yourself paying way more in fuel.
@TKM11370
@TKM11370 10 лет назад
Hold on, the car has a super huge fuel tank. That doesn't mean in any way it has range. You could take the a3 2.0 Tdi and do 64mpg.....

Range is how far you can go on a tank. Not how efficiently you do it.
@TKM11370
@TKM11370 10 лет назад
You're right, I put my point across poorly. When you are trying to make something look like it has range it made more sense to showcase how many miles to the gallon it can do as that is the ultimate test. If you had an A3 with the same size fuel tank as the A8, it would have a far greater range.
@TheSmokingTire
@TheSmokingTire 10 лет назад
Tony McSpadden Yes, but it would be an A3. I just drove the new A3 up in San Francisco. And let me tell you, there's no way in hell I'd want to do an 867 mile trip in that car.
@adpmol
@adpmol 10 лет назад
TheSmokingTire I drove an X5 with the 305 section rear tires 3.0 diesel from Luxembourg (Asselborn) to France (Narbonne) around 980km - 610 miles , fully loaded with a bike rack on the rear , averaged around 55mph , it has a slightly bigger fuel tank than the Audi , but for an SUV on fat tires , I thought it was incredible . A euro 2001 320d on the other hand does 730 miles with 16.8 gallons . Dont get me wrong a diesel Audi is great , but I find that the older diesels are much more fuel efficient and reliable. New diesels do multiple injections every compression stroke purely for emissions, and that kills the fuel economy. Clarkson even drove the old big 4.0TDI 800miles
@TheSmokingTire
@TheSmokingTire 10 лет назад

Okay, i'm not arguing my friend! Just as far as I've been aware, in the automotive industry running a diesel car out is a huge no no. But hey, things may have changed, especially with Audi's innovative TDI engines! It's most likely that they have a system whereby they reserve some diesel within the system so you don't have to go through this lengthily process if you do happen to run it dry :)
@bmcunning

251 miles on 6.3 gallons. 2014 q5 3.0 tdi. That is 40 mpg. Tank size 19.8 gallons. If I take it to the end(just quoted tank size), that's 800 miles. If I bled the tank dry would probably be 850 miles. Point I'm getting at is trip showed 38.5, I actually got 40 mpg. Shouldn't be possible from a 6 cylinder SUV. Got to love it! If my tank was the size of the A8, then I would be pushing the 1000 miles mark! Got to love audi!

Old ones do. New ones shut down electronically before they get to that point.

We have an Audi A4 from 2004 with a 1.9 Turbo Diesel and a 18.5 gallon fuel tank. It´s not as comfortable as the A8L in the video BUT it has a range of 680 miles. So with a 23.8 gallon fuel tank like the one in the A8L, it would have a range of 878 miles!

I don't think your foot can react as quickly or perfectly as radar-controlled cruise control, but we all agreed that if you got directly onto the highway and went 65, it would probably do 900-1,000 miles.
@dannywpjr
@dannywpjr 10 лет назад
Zack Klapman Its not your reaction in terms of quickness; its driving style, say you set your cruse for 65 on a hill gravity works against the car and the transmission has to change to a lower gear to maintain speed bringing up the RPM's of the engine which will burn more fuel (not much but a little adds up over time). If you were to use your foot up that same hill but slow down to allow the transmission to stay in the higher gear the engine does not burn the fuel however you do loose speed which you would gain on the down slope all without using any more gas. All this is moot though since the point of the video was to imitate a nice relaxing trip with some friends and not a purely eco run.

Love this trip; because somehow in the midst of 2000s millions of Americans are brainwashed into thinking large SUVs are the ultimate roadtrip vehicles. Super luxo-cruisers like this A8 begs to differ, and with better efficiency as well.

My 2013 F-150 ecoboost Supercrew 6.5 foot bed 5700 pound truck, with the 3.31 rear end axle ratio got 1400km/875miles on 1 tank of gas just highway driving cruise control on for an entire day. I know there was only city driving when forced from highway to highway. Not to bad at all still! $160 dollars to fill the tank in canada and arrived in South Carolina 18 hours later

what about the A6 TDI? same range out of a full tank?
@johanlittorin2765
@johanlittorin2765 10 лет назад
Well, maybe. It's smaller and lighter and can be had with smaller/less powerful engines. But also have a smaller fuel tank. So it's hard to say if the A6 can do the same range or out-run the A8. Atleast better MPG.

Great car, pathetic and childish video. Wouldn't it have been better to showcase culturally important and interesting sights that people could learn from seeing? But, from seeing and listening to the presenters, I suppose that would have been far beyond their ken. How sad this garbage was.

Nothing special at all. Here in Europe most diesel cars with a decent tank size can reach that range easily. An A6 and A4 with the smaller 2.0 4 cilinder engine would give you even a bigger range.
@TheLowCodist

Frankly, I think this car and review is pretty pointless. If gas mileage is what you're after in your $100k sedan, go for the Model S and never pay for fuel again. If you can afford a $100k sedan, you can afford a plane ticket to anywhere that would require a 900 mile range. Road trips are a waste of time and are boring as hell, as this video so clearly demonstrated. I guess it served a purpose in that regard.
@46CMRossi

How do you get "gas" mileage on a Model S ?
@TheLowCodist
@TheLowCodist 10 лет назад
Kevin Walsh they use a formula to give a mathematical equivalent. Basically it converts kwH to e-MPG.
@danny_case
@danny_case 10 лет назад
1) Tesla Model S has a range of 300 miles @ 55MPH. After that it needs to be re-charge, which can take several hours depending on how full you want the battery. This is far from ideal when road-tripping. 2) A plane ticket, or travelling by plane, defeats the idea of road tripping via automobile. The entire notion that road trips are boring as hell is subjective, I for one love road trips! I love driving, listening to my tunes, and letting my car rip in the open road. Based on my preferences, road tripping is something I genuinely enjoy. Before posting take a minute to think about what you're going to say because you're embarrassing yourself and your family.
@dzelpwr
@dzelpwr 10 лет назад
Dan, it's not gas mileage so much as RANGE. How far can you go on a single charge in a Model S? 200 miles? 300? This Audi can go well over 800 miles without having to stop for fuel. I also know of a much older vehicle in VW's line up that can go even further (also TDI powered).
@TheLowCodist
@TheLowCodist 10 лет назад
DrummerPGR Embarrassing my family? If you take the internet this seriously, you've got bigger issues to deal with than my opinion on road trips. Don't be so fucking dramatic. And I'll be the judge of whether or not I'm embarrassed - you can't decide that. (I'm not, by the way, because I know I'm right - but I digress.) I'm well aware of what the Tesla is capable of, as well as this A8. Nobody gives a rats ass about being able to drive 900 miles on one tank of $4/gal diesel anymore. This shit is old news that would have been relevant 15 years ago, but has been rendered pointless by cheap air travel, cheap econo-boxes, and just generally being cost-prohibitive. This car is a limousine, nothing more. If you're telling me that you are consistently driving your $100k diesel on 900 mile road trips so you can have fun and listen to music, you can jog on, because I don't believe you at all. People with that kind of money don't do that shit. Ask me how I know.

Funny to see that you americans finally discovered what diesel is. And just one thing about you praising the "fuel efficiency": In europe, we have just normal cars that consume 50% less fuel than this one and less than a quarter of the american bestseller the Ford F-150 (which is still an amazing truck) but I guess you guys don't care about such things as environment and just put a 3.0 V6 in every normal sedan.
