@@VirtuellJo it's not exactly an equal comparison. Compare new vs new, 100k~ miles vs 100k~ miles. Saying that, definitely interested in an ipace review, their range is similar to the M3 SR+, and their charge rate is pretty low compared to Teslas, but it'd be interesting to see how much of a difference it makes overall

2020 would be interesting year, first MEB platform EVs will be available, VW ID.3, Audi Q4 e-tron (production starts Sep), they for sure will occupy top positions in Bjorn's 1000km challenge list, maybe even first and second place...

Thank you for this great test! Smaller and more efficient cars such as Tesla Model 3 or Kona/e-Niro/e-Soul seem to be a better choice for long distance. I only wished that Hyundai/Kia would built in a faster charging device.

@@darkkennny1 Elon stated in 2018 after Tesla bought out Maxwell that Tesla plans to have a 500 mile range option for the brand. He stated that on a conference call about and a questioned was asked about the Maxwell connection. Then in the Model 3 sofware update there is a 100 kWh battery option and the Cybertruck as a 500 mile range version for under 70K. A lot of things point to higher capacity batteries in a speech the head of engineering at Maxwell before Tesla acquired the company said the new battery under development would have up to 30 percent higher energy density an use less cobalt and nickel. It also improved the process to manufacture the batteries by cutting the number of steps in manufacturing.

Regarding the unfavourable conditions, the e-tron 50 should be more frugal then the e-tron 55 (car is lighter). E-tron 50 consumed 28Wh/km more in these tests. So my guess would be that the e-tron 50 consumed 35 kW -40 kW more due to the conditions, which would be putting it at 11:30-11:40. So it would still not make a huge difference ;-)

We go on holidays to Croatia every year and the time would be comparable to the #1 placed Model 3, though we don't fill up during our break cause the car goes beyond 1000km. I would take a Model 3 in a heartbeat.

@@radomir101 That's what all EV owners say, but in reality when I drive my petrol car between Oslo and Stavanger (around 600km) I spend not more than 10-15 min in total on stops during the entire trip (5-10 min if driving alone).

@@reinterpret_cast I drive an ev and I agree with you. Charge stops on long runs are a pain. Its certainly not just "stopping to eat/pee" as a lot of ev drivers would have you think. What is usually a 5-15 min stop every 3-4 hours turns into a 30-50min stop every hour or hour and a half. Thats if you happen to be near a charger when the charge is low aswell. In a lot of my country you have to make massive detours or charge very early/late which adds even more time and messing about. Same if a charger is full or broken. In an ice you just go to the next. In an ev its usually a worry and sometimes a very long wait.

The e-tron is really a good looking car, especially in white. I am looking forward to Audi releasing an e-tron Avant as I for one doesn't see the point of an SUV over a station-wagon.

I still don’t understand why gas stations all have covered pumps for 5 minutes of pumping but very few charging stations do although it takes longer. Yes, you can sit in the car but still would b nice.

Bjørn, the 28 kWh Ioniq also pulls extra heating power from HPCs. When everything's switched off, mine pulls upto close to 68 kW from the charger, but when heating was on once on (7°C at Ionity Hohenwarsleben), it pulled 70 kW. I made pictures of course ;-) That was my first ever HPC session btw back in november 2018

These high charging speeds sound impressive but the consumption kills it! Charging 42 minutes to drive 170km is not much better than a Leaf does it. (OK, the Audi does it more often:)

I hate the high consumption of this car, the only thing what is not good about it. I'll wait for a electric Audi station wagon (A4 or A6 size), hopefully they will bring that out in the next years.

One time I was driving to a Tesla supercharger on a road trip and 15min before I got there it show temporary shut down and I don't have enough to go to another charger. I went anyway and luckily the charger still works. Or else I will have to spend an hour+ on a public level 2. So Tesla owner can have the same issue.

Kevin Chung It can clearly happen. But Tesla owners do have the advantage of being able to use the supercharging network as well as other networks such as Ionity, so at least there is a chance that when it happens there are other options available.

i hope, that Bjorn know the failure in this comparison: the Tesla Car show in the Cockpit only the DriveUnit-Consumption. The E-Tron shows you the complete Consumption (DriveUnit/MCU/AC/Heating/Light etc). The same is in the most other E-Cars ( but not by Tesla)

German Audi Fahrer also want to drive as fast as possible on the left lane 😜(there is no speed limit on many German Autobahn) In their eyes other drivers with 180km/h on the left lane are unnecessary a.. holes. So this wall on four wheels will consume a "bit" more than 38kw/h at top speed 😁

That's because you don't understand the purpose of the test. It's to see not just how far it can go on a full charge but also how long it takes to recharge and continue. Some lower capacity cars actually finish in a shorter time because they charge significantly faster.

"The chargers are dead" .... I would been so ticked off. Sadly I missed this live but also why I watch the footage after the live stream. I don't pay attention to the availability of superchargers. I have for other third party stations since I'm looking at charge prices. If there was more choices I'd be looking for cheapest option.

So break it down for me. Total hrs from start to finish How many times did you stop to charge Actual time spent charging With my old fossil fuel vehicle, I can take a 500 mile trip ( 804.6 km ), start at 6:30 am and arrive at 2:30 pm with 1 stop for gas ( 10 mins max at fuel stop ) driving at 70-75 mph ( 112-120 kph ).

Bjorn, showing up to a Super Charger and it not working with only 5-10% range left in the car while on a road trip is a nightmare scenario, one I would not want to experience. Does the Audi not give you real-time data on the status of Chargers like Tesla or Mercedes EQC? Lesson here is not to drain battery to low in case of this happening as you will need juice to get to the next Level 2 or 3 Charger which could be abother 80 km or more.

Bjorn, when looking at the overview table of your 1000 km tests I see that the range between chargings for the Model 3 after the update (67kWh available/238 Wh/km)=281 km, and for the e-Tron 55 (83.1 kW/h available/291 Wh/km= 285 km. This is rather surprising to me. I don't know how much faster you hammered the Model 3 (you did drive quite fast at first). But the 285 km on the etron is more than your result in the summer range test at 120 km/h.... Tires seem the same, I have not heard of an update of the etron so far. Any idea?

You did not mention the 30-minute adjustment in your summation at the end, and it was not reflected in the spreadsheet. Did you apply that correction in the final results?

Would it save some battery juice if you would not use the Dynamic drive but Comfort or Efficiency instead of Dynamic?

With the new prices of the ionity chargers in mind, what charging locations are you going to be using for future 1000km challenges? Would it impact performance?

New price does only affect cars by manufacturers that are not in the Ionity consortium.

@@axelfiedler from what i understood you need a subscription to get lower prices. Plus not every car is in that group... If he plans to do these challenges for a variety for cars then hell either have to spend a lot of money or find a cheaper solution

@@luukscholten8155 I would actually prefer if he would not use the Ionity chargers for cars by other manufacturers then. Basically Ionity closed their chargers now against third parties and you could compare it to the Tesla supercharger network that also no other cars can use. So basically the Ionity charger network is something you only get if you buy a car from one of the manufacturers in the consortium.

@@axelfiedler Even when you are in the consortium you will have to pay 3x as much (€25) for a 80 KWh refill. And an €216 annual bill... which is a lot for drivers who only fast charge on holidays.

Astronomic high consumption and not much faster than the old Ioniq. So, it's definitely not a car to safe the climate.
