2021 B9 Audi RS4 review and drive.
Audi invited OVERTAKE to join them on a range sample day in the Cotswolds and we kick started with the 2020 model year Audi B9 RS4. With Audi going to a full electric vehicle model range from 2026 onwards, this B9 RS4 looks set to be the last combustion engine Audi RS 4 in history. It could in fact be the last RS4 full stop, the perfect time to sample the RS4 then, in the perfect setting, on the open Cotswolds roads.
The RS 4 model has an illustrious history beginning with the original B5 Audi RS 4 Avant quattro, a 380 bhp, Quattro all wheel drive powerhouse of an estate car (or wagon, or touring, depending on where you're from) and continuing on to the this latest generation of car. You could argue that the model really began with the first RS model Audi, the RS 2, which was co-developed with Porsche and featured that classic Audi 5 cylinder engine, but the first car to be badged an RS 4, was the B7 model in 1999/2000.
This latest RS4 is equipped with a 2.9 litre twin-turbocharged V6 co-developed with Porsche (featured in the Cayenne S, Macan Turbo and Panamera S) pumping out some 444 BHP (or 450PS) mated to an 8 speed automatic gearbox and Audi's Quattro all wheel drive system. Power is split mechanically 40:60 front-rear, although either axle can actively receive more depending on the available grip levels. All UK cars get a Sport Differential, which is able to mechanically vector torque across the rear axle.
The B9 generation RS 4 is some 80kg lighter than the previous model and the ride is controlled by Audi Sport’s Dynamic Ride Control system, which allows you to choose between a variety of driving modes.
The time we spent with the RS 4 revealed a true characterful driving experience, with an engine and gearbox that were always ready for action. A proper point-to-point weapon. The latest V6 Twin Turbo engine was surprisingly vocal and really enjoyed to rev out and rewarded the driver in a way we just didn't expect. Often, modern Turbo engines don't really need to rev right out with their strong torque characteristics but the RS4 seemed to offer the best of both worlds, low down torque and top end power as well.
If this is to be the last RS 4, it will certainly be a model we miss in the years to come and I'm sure the combustion era of high performance Audi's will be fondly remembered. There have certainly been some greats over the years, this now being one of them. We must try one of the infamous B7 Model RS4's with that Iconic naturally aspirated V8 and a manual gearbox soon!
