Hey there George , you enlightened me once again to a piece of equipment that I simply had to have ....... “ The Parrot !” I looked high and low for a parrot in my price range but I couldn’t find one cheaper than about 50 bucks. So I had to put my mind to making a homemade parrot. The little blue kit that I found on Amazon, the alcoholometer set that is mini size and divided into 3 sections, comes with a 100ml. Plastic testing tube ( beaker ). I made a parrot that is perfect with the mini P&T set in the blue kit . I wanted to post the pictures of it but it won’t let me send it here so I will send it to ya in an Email. You might want to use the idea and pictures to tell folks how they can make one. This got my attention with the first video you posted. I built a similar system using a custom-built ESP8266 board with a Pololu TOF sensor and a DS18B20 digital temperature sensor. This allows me to calculate the ABV adjusted to 20 degrees C, and transmit the results via WiFi to a server that stores and graphs the results. Thanks for the inspiration.

I am thrilled to watch your magic, like making a 240-volt heating element in a brew kettle;e, a PID, now AUDIBLE PROOF AND TRALLE PARROT HEAD, and the other great things you do. Very interested. I am legally blind at best and starting out on this distilling venture. Was wondering how hard it will be to read the hydrometers. Looks like a good application for a Raspberry PI
I spend a day at a now defunct distillery and they had software that kept track of the ABV and other stats as I was leaving the still. They also had a hand held device that was used to scan ABV and other chemical makers on samples removed from barrels. I wonder if there are cheap knockoffs of that type of device available from China
Happy Distilling , on screen mention , 15:28 time stamp,, the reading would be slightly different from measured,, how slight of a reading are you talking, 1% or 10% on the scale. this is just awesome,, I want to make one just for the fun of doing it,, Question,, will a different hydrometer ,, say you break the one you are using,, and replace it,, will that make every reading different,, meaning you have to reprogram .. I think I have about 3 different ones, and the measurement from top to the proof lines are different measurements,, that paper label inside is just not placed the same,, they are probably placed different according to weight in the bulb, any thoughts on that.
@jbrunson1949 The difference in the reading was between 4 - 6% of what we could visually read so it was minor but apparent. We are working on methods to reduce / remove this bias in the reading. Next question, will different hydrometers give different readings... answer is yes. However in the software code we will be exposing a configuration file on the SD drive where you will be able to specify the offset (of the hat at the 0 proof reading) as well as the 0 to 200 proof range distance. A lot of coding went into this and there is still more to do. :)
