AUDIO LEVELS FOR VOICE OVERS Take our Adobe Audition course here: www.voiceovermasterclass.com/a...
Welcome to Voiceover Masterclass, where we unravel the mystery behind audio levels for voiceover artists! 🎙️ Have you ever been puzzled about whether your voiceover files are too loud or too soft, fearing they might get rejected by the client? Fear no more! We've got you covered with this straightforward and engaging guide.
As voiceover artists, our goal is to deliver top-notch recordings that clients can seamlessly incorporate into their posh studios without any hiccups. The key to success lies in achieving clean, distortion-free audio, with no pesky background hiss. So, let's dive into the nitty-gritty of audio levels.
⭐ Finding the Perfect Balance:
Finding the perfect balance between audio levels can be a challenge. Too low, and you risk amplifying unwanted background noise, resulting in annoying hissing sounds. On the other hand, going too loud can lead to disastrous distortions, and that's something we all want to avoid!
💡 Expert Tip:
While there are no strict rules for exact levels due to the dynamic nature of our voices, we recommend sticking to a waveform like the one displayed on your screen. This sweet spot ensures your recording isn't plagued by hiss or distortion.
🎭 Emotional Narration and Dynamic Range:
If your work involves emotional narration or a wide range of volumes, including soft and loud parts, it's crucial to maintain proper levels. The highest points should never distort! Before recording, especially in live sessions, do a test to fine-tune your settings for flawless delivery.
🎛️ Advanced Techniques:
For clients requesting a finished file, you may want to add a hard limiter to tame any spikes and then apply a light compression. Curious about compression? Check out our video (linked around this one) that explains it all! Typically, though, sending the raw file is the norm, allowing clients to process it on their end.
🔊 Your Target Level: -3dB:
To ensure optimal audio quality, aim to keep your levels peaking at around -3dB. This sweet spot allows for a bit of headroom while preventing any unwanted distortions.
🎉 Take Action, Improve, and Share! 🎉
Remember, watching videos alone won't bring about the changes you seek. The key is to implement what you learn and practice regularly. Share this video with fellow voiceover artists, and let's elevate our craft together!

Thanks for the video :-) How do you do screamings, which settings are you using on your Focusrite?
@Voiceovermasterclass

It's not just a case of lower levels on the Focusrite as even that on the "quarter to" setting on INPUT will still distort. For close mike screaming I have to use (and you will too, probably!) an inline -10dB XLR attenuator. This is between the microphone and the input cable of the Focusrite! A quality attenuator (mine from Canford audio) will still allow the +48v to be transmitted to the mike.
