This is a video showing the difference between a conventionally installed and amplified speaker system and a tuned one using a digital signal processor, aka DSP.
Processor: Helix DSP PRO MK2:
Remote Control with Screen: Helix/Match Director
Amplifiers, Subwoofer, 2-way Speakers: FOCAL K2
This was not our installation so cannot say much about the quality of the speaker fitment but before the sound tuning was done, the system was nearly unlistenable.
Unfortunately, many people will end up having their cars fitted with new and often very expensive equipment, only focusing on which brand it is and totally ignoring all the other aspects for a good sound.
This was one of the cases where after spending many thousands of $$ it still wasn't anywhere near the quality desired. One afternoon with a PC in the car made all the previous effort worthwhile.
So if you planning on doing big installs, do not forget to get yourself a good DSP to get the most out of it.

Tuning definitely makea a difference, even with simple tuning (e.g. 5-6 band) on headunit. The bigger question would be, how much difference in terms of sound between different brands? The prices of DSP can differ a lot, sometimes the much cheaper ones offer even more features. One shop tuner I spoked too swears by Helix and claims it will sound way better, but how can we verify it unless one has comparison of swapping dsp in the same car with the same setup? Tuning alone makes the big difference, but how much difference would different brand of dsp make? Is it drastic or even actually noticeable for average listeners?

Hello. what microphone did you use to measure? The difference is totally audible on a cell phone greeting

I think the difference is given by sound being processed as Stage Xpander and Clarity Xpander function of the system. That system lacks Matrix which is completely different approach of sound processing in which vocals are more realistically separated on sound stage. Do not worry not many systems has it. Do you have a central speaker on the dash?

No stage xpander nor clarity xpander used. Centre speaker disconnected. The bypass only affects the EQ so it wasn't even a full bypass.

Tons of difference.. However, how close could someone with an ear, an Eq, and separate amp control of each speaker get to this? Could they rival a dsp? How about spending the extra $1K on more equipment?

@hapexamendar1093 I'm late to the party, but a decent DSP can provide the Single Largest Improvement in SQ to ANY car audio system....MUCH more than any differences between any two decent amplifiers, and much more than the differences between speakers. While the level of SQ that you can ultimately achieve will be limited by the Quality of the Speakers and Subwoofers/Enclosure (and their PROPER Installation), when PROPERLY TUNED by an experienced and knowledgable tech, a good DSP unit will allow you to Extract and Experience THE FULL POTENTIAL of ALL of your other expensive gear! We need to remember that a "DSP" doesn't just provide a "Global" EQ (which on its own is very important), but the DSP can provide INDEPENDENT P-EQ for Each Channel, which is incredibly important in order to MATCH the Left side Frequency Response to the Right side Frequency Response, At Your Listening Position. This alone is HUGE. However, a DSP also provides OPTIMIZED Crossovers, for both speaker protection and ideal Frequency & Phase response between all of the speakers. Non-adjustable Passive Crossovers are a Compromise in that they need to be designed as a "One Size Fits All" solution, which is NOT ideal. The variable distances, spacing, and aiming angles of each speaker due to the widely different mounting locations in different vehicles severely affects the Phase, Timing, Frequency Response, and Transition from speaker to speaker in relation to your listening position, and Passive Crossovers CAN NOT account for or adjust for that. Every vehicle is unique and different. In addition, Independent Time Alignment for Each Speaker is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY in order to achieve Realistic Imaging, a good Soundstage, and "UPFRONT Bass" in a vehicle where we cannot sit perfectly centered and equidistant from the Left & Right speakers like we can in a home audio system. While the Demonstration in this video is generally good and we can in fact hear a significant difference in the Sound Quality (for the better) when the DSP's EQ correction is activated, the quality and limitations of recording the system with an iPhone or smartphone WILL NOT allow us to hear the full scale of the improvements, including those in reagards to the improved imaging and soundstage. Without a DSP that has ALL of these different tools that are INDEPENDENTLY ADJUSTABLE FOR EACH CHANNEL and that are combined into one relatively compact package, we just cannot acheive anything close to a true high-end SQ system in a vehicle. Search for the SQ Competition/Event schedule on each of the different Car Audio Competition organization's websites to see if and when a SQ Competition will be happening near you. There is IASCA, MECA, MASQ, SQology, and EMMA. Try and go to one of these events (go early) and ask around for what Top 10 vehicles you should listen to first. Most of the competitors are happy to give you a short demo as long as they are not waiting for a SQ Judge to Evaluate and Score their system. I think you'll be blown away by what you hear. :) You can ask them if they have a "Before & After" tuning preset as well.
