Hello Red! Thank you for this in-depth tutorial, which I found very useful. One point I wanted to add, and it probably reflects my stupidity, was that I was frustrated for a while when trying a variety of powered microphones to the audio-in of the Ninja V and not getting any activation on the audio-in recording meters, no matter what I did! Simple tip: the HDMI input has to be live (i.e. plugged into an active camera's HDMI output port) and then when the Ninja recognises it has an input the audio signal on its audio-in immediately. Not something that would be a problem actually shooting, but it stumped me for a while when running tests just with a microphone and the Ninja V! Anyway thanks again for such helpful content!

Very nice and informative RU-vid. I have one question about Ninja V audio. I have been having a difficulty in handling Ninja V audio only when I use AppleProResHQ or Raw. I import all the audio data into Logic Pro X for audio editing, and I find AppleProResHQ audio data is all surround format despite that I used only two channel audio with a stereo set of microphones. Does this happen to a "normal setting" of Ninja V or I may have done something wrong?
@RedFrameTech
@RedFrameTech 6 месяцев назад
I have not had your specific issue. I also don’t believe the Ninja can ‘record’ surround. I can imagine it may be because of how Logic Pro interprets the audio files? But that’s a wild guess.. I don’t use Logic. When you figured out what the issue is, please let me know. I’m always interested to hear different use cases and issues.

For spoken word, an average of between -6 and -12dB is good. But make sure nothing goes past -0. In your case I would monitor closely and probably adjust levels during the event, depending on if someone is speaking or if it’s singing for example

great tutorial... everything is clear so far. But why is there a total of 12 audio tracks when you can only connect Line/In and HDMI??? best regards Andi
@RedFrameTech
@RedFrameTech Год назад
Hi Andi! That’s because it is possible to have more than 2 digital channels of audio over HDMI, depending on the device used. For example, a Lumix GH6 with an XLR-1 adaptor could send out 4 channels of audio over HDMI

Just wondering...if you ninja is on the grip of the gimbal...and you cannot place it on top of the camera...where do you mount you external mic? And...how can you prevent fan noise from the ninja to be caputered/recorded?
@RedFrameTech

I use several configurations, but I will usually put a mic (Deity D4 mini) on top of the camera when using a gimbal. That way, the mic is always directed at whatever I’m filming and there’s no fan noise from the ninja being picked up.

I have a Nikon Z7II and DJI mic what do you think about this combo ?
@RedFrameTech
@RedFrameTech 7 месяцев назад
Hey man! I would always prefer to record audio directly to the camera, though it depends on the quality of the pre amps in the camera. This way you don’t have to worry about delay. Even when you also record to the Ninja at the same time. If you plug a mic in to the ninja, that’s where the delay comes and where you need to calibrate the delay with the trs cable. Without the trs cable trick it’s going to be hard to set the delay. You’ll have to film a stopwatch, record it on both the camera and the ninja and then bring it in to you editing software, line then up and measure the delay. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
@RedFrameTech
@RedFrameTech 7 месяцев назад
Sounds like a fine combo, but I don’t have experience with the Z7ii. Just keep in mind that with a wireless mic system there’s potential latency anyway that you may have to resync with the video

Hi, I bought the Ninja V to capture content from blu-ray/Apple TV. It is able to record video &multichannel audio. However, the subwoofer & centre channel are swapped.. Hello Red, nice to greet you. I have watched your video and have learned a lot. My question is about a sound mixer where I want to output the microphone signals on the left and the music on the right. The problem is that when I connect the jack output of the mixer to the mini jack of the Atomos V I can’t get any signal to come in. I can’t find any information about sound tables and recorders, do you know if this is possible? Or do I need an external recorder and then sync it in post? Thanks!
@RedFrameTech
@RedFrameTech Год назад
Hi Diego. I don’t know what mixer you’re using, but you have to use a stereo output if you want to separate left and right. I’m assuming you’re using a line-level output on your mixer which should provide a line level amplified signal to your ninja v. Then it would be a matter of arming the ninja for recording and embedding the line input, which I explained how to do in my stream. A number of things could cause it not to work; the wrong cable (should be stereo), not arming the ninja for recording the line input, the mixer not putting a signal out, gain on the mixer, etc etc. Hard to say what the issue is here. Best thing to do is to eliminate one possible cause at a time. I’d say start with testing if the mixer is putting a signal out and go from there. Sebastiaan

Since this recorder can capture a total of 14 channels of audio (2 microphone, 12 HDMI), is there a way to embed the 12 channels of audio from an external mixer so I can have all of the audio in one place? I have only seen HDMI embedders that seem to offer 2 channels of recording, but I'm thinking of making use of the other channels if possible.
@RedFrameTech
@RedFrameTech Год назад
Good question. It can record 1 analog (stereo) signal via the 3.5mm input. The other channels are digital, so via HDMI. So I guess what you’re saying should be possible if you split the 3.5mm into 2 sources (mono mics) and you can send the channel from your mixer over HDMI. Never tried something like that though.
@CharlesTurcott
@CharlesTurcott Год назад
Yes, exactly. I'm fairly new to managing audio for video recordings, but it seems like there might be an opportunity there if we can figure out what devices can encode it. I would love to be able to include all of the audio in a single file. Are you aware of any devices that can send 2+ channels (or even 12) over HDMI? I'm not even sure of what the standard for recording this way is called except that it's in the HDMI spec. Here is a quote about it: Does HDMI 2.0 include enhanced audio support? The specification includes dynamic lip-sync capability, support of 32 audio channels, and a sample frequency of up to 1,536 kHz. It also allows simultaneous delivery of up to four multi-stream audio outputs.@@RedFrameTech
@RedFrameTech
@RedFrameTech Год назад
@@CharlesTurcott HDMI as a standard is definitely capable of it. But I don’t know of any mixer that can send out 12 channels of audio over hdmi. I do believe there are converters on the market that can convert an analog or digital audio signal to HDMI. Not sure what device exactly, but I think Google might have the answer 😄

@@teddylevitt4437 The ninja can record the audio that your camera is picking up, yes. So it doesn't need its own mic. But I might have an idea about what your issue might be. If I understand you correctly, you have a mic connected to your camera (or just the camera's internal mic) and an hdmi cable connected to your ninja. I assume you have the audio channels on the ninja armed for recording. So, I think when you bring your recording onto your computer, that's where you don't hear anything. Am I right? That could be because the audio track on the ninja may be recorded to channel 3 and 4. In a regular audio player this will not be played back. If you bring it into Davinci Resolve for example, those channel will be played back. Let me know if that helps. If it's not that, I'm happy to figure it out with you. Be careful with Atomos support as they don’t seem to know their products other than basic issues. I didn’t like the audio on my Zcam F6 so I’m connected to a Ninja V via hdmi and use time code start to start recording on the ninja when I press record on the Zcam. This works great but I have my Audio Devices mix pre 3 connected to output of the ninja and the ninja won’t pass the tc start signal thru. Their support says whatever comes into the input is passed to the output and it should work. I have four different Atomos recorders and it doesn’t work on any of them. The mix pre 3 does work if connected directly to the camera so I know that isn’t the problem. No longer using this setup but a little disappointed in Atomos.
