After hearing Tom Port’s negative comments on Chris Bellman, I am reminded why I don’t care about anything he says.
@jeremyh5404
@jeremyh5404 8 месяцев назад
Yep. All the VC RU-vidrs rave about the Neil Young and Van Halen records, for example, that Bellman has done. Then, this guy comes in and says they don’t sound good. We need him to comb thru all the pressings from the past to find the needle in the haystack. Not just a particular pressing, but the handful of copies of that pressing that will be “next level” and take us to some sort of audio heaven? Seriously, if I bought into his schtick, I’d be so frustrated that I would abandon the hobby all together.

Interesting to hear different points of view. But Tom Port’s concept flies in the face of everything the rest of you VC guys do. You guys try to help your listeners, by pointing out good pressings. That is much appreciated. Tom Port basically says that all of that is crap. Pressings that are revered by others, don’t actually sound good. I realize there can variability, even within the same Dead wax. But Tom Port is kinda saying the chances of finding a good sounding record, on our own is like winning the lottery. Need to pay him to do it for us. I’m just going back to Mazzy’s mantra. “It’s the music stupid.”

No, Elvis Costello’s first album was not recorded in America, no matter what Tom Port’s Chiropractor says. It was recorded at Pathway Studios in London, and the first UK was cut by George (Porky/Pecko) Peckham. I’ll take that any day over the American cut of the same tracks (since the two countries had different track listings).
@the-skeptical-audiophile
@the-skeptical-audiophile 8 месяцев назад
I stand corrected, the album was indeed recorded in England. Not sure how I got that wrong, but it probably has to do with the right domestic pressings sounding like they were sourced from the master, and the UK imports sounding like they weren't, George Peckham or no George Peckham. Most of his work is not just hard to beat, but impossible to beat. He did cut a very bad version of Badfinger's Straight Up for the UK market. I wrote about it: "We had an original British pressing in our shootout, unbeknownst to me as it was playing of course. And guess where it finished: dead last. The most thick, congested, crude, distorted, compressed sound of ALL the copies we played. We love the work of Porky, Pecko, et al. in general, but once again this is a case where a British Band recorded in England sounds best on domestic vinyl. (McCartney’s first album on Apple is the same way.)" As for the British pressing having superior sound, that has not been our experience. It is surely superior to most domestic copies of the album, which tend to be congested, distorted and dark. We played a few UK pressings over the years and none of them sounded good to us. There may be such a thing, but we have not heard it and remain as skeptical as ever. The only difference I can see in the track listings is that the domestic pressing has one extra track, Watching the Detectives. TP

@@Groover71 I agree that some of Port’s comments were over the top, ridiculous. Agree or not, that’s been his takes on most of these reissues for sone time now. Most of us enjoy most of the work that both CB and BG do. Not everything , but many of their record cuts. Every person presents their take, and the discussion goes where it goes.

They haven't been done! And they need to release the 1996 Trial By Fire LP because it's never been put to vinyl. Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

Tom mentioned he had a Benz Micro cartridge, which has a higher input voltage level than the Dynavector Microline is now uses that is less noisy. Both MM and MC carts are good, it depends on the tonearm table combo. A Nagoaka MP110 is a decent cart for the $$ and I like the way it sounds more than an Ortofon red or blue for example. It comes down to personal taste but a cartridge only has to do one thing. Reveal all the information in the groove and don't alter or colour or mask the sound in any way.

Heh, I knew as soon as you mentioned MM vs. MC you were gonna get Patrick's attention 😁 That is one thing that I admire about Patrick because EVERY guy and his damn dog is like MC ONLY IS THE BEST! Well, perhaps with some very high end equipment, but I respect the fact that Patrick uses MM in his very high end rips. BTW steve, your volume is still fluctuating somewhat. Not as bad as last time which literally went from a whisper to a scream, but you still have some dropped volume so you might wish to check that out. Good news about Tom's comment about the 1st US Greenie for Sabbath's S/T 👍 Although I do have the vertigo stampers (WWA) for Paranoid, MOR, and '4' which are awesome. Coincidentally, just today I played my 1973 Black 'B' label Something Else 😁 It did sound very good, I wonder if this is one of the better sounding pressings that Tom was talking about? And, YES Mazzy, I just wrote a seller about a NM pressing of the Superstars '70's album shipped for about $14 😊

Bill Withers greatest is amazing but a hidden gem from 1967 is Capitals 25 year anniversary comp called the Silver Years. This sounds amazing with some of the best music. I believe it was limited to only those who were in the club back then but they are cheap and the sound is audiophile for sure. A1 Nat King Cole- Nature Boy A2 Peggy Lee- Fever A3 Stan Kenton- Artistry In Rythm A4 Kay Starr- Wheel Of Fortune A5 Tennessee Ernie Ford- 16 Tons A6 Dean Martin- Volare B1 Nancy Wilson- Satin Doll B2 Al Martino- Spanish Eyes B3 Wayne Newton- Danke Schoen B4 Lou Rawls- St. James Infirmary B5 Matt Monro- Strangers In The Night B6 Sandler & Young- Dominique

Enjoyable as always. I am curious though, why is there not more talk about mixing engineers and acoustic treatment for a listening area? Of course if someone likes the listening environment that's great. I just seem to hear all about equipment, which is important, and mastering engneers, which too is important. Acoustic treatment can make a huge difference in a listening environment, and if the record was not a good mix the mastering engineer can only do so much.

I disagree with Patrick Yes you get down to specific copies varients, pressing plants but when you are at that level A Santa Maria pressed late in the stamper life versus a Terre Haute early in the stamper life can make the difference. Listen with your ears not just your eyes(head knowledge) You sometimes end up owning 6 copies of the first couple pressings and one or two really jump out Do you guys go to great lengths to adjust VTA? As far as blind tests. Someone with a trained ear and reference to instrumental sound characteristics and particularly familiar with that record can easily distinguish the sound differences on either copy. It does not matter if you know which copy you are listening to if you are objective Throw out the labels, mastering engineers etc - just throw the record on to enjoy - the shoot out aspect becomes obvious not a chore

The sadest Music Collector in my opinion is the one constantly prioritizing and chasing sound quality over musical content. If you listen to various genres and own more than a couple of hundred albums you come across so many different recording qualities, why would I make my live and my listening experience miserable by being concerned if the version I have is the best or only the second best or...? To borrow a line from Mazzy, what a wanker fest. Patrick’s rant about MM vs MC is a gross overgeneralization and completely without context of the system, table, and arm. Yes, on a lower end table and arm, most MC cartridges will sound like shit. Many times, I have steered people away from MC cartridges as a means to ‘upgrade’ a low to mid fi table. On the new Brilliant Corners comments, I would bet neither Geoff or Nathan listened to it with a mono cartridge. I stand corrected if they have, but disagree with their assessment. I have compared mono records between my My Sonic Labs Signature Platinum (which I adore) and my Miyajima Zero and a My Sonic Labs Solo and came away overwhelmingly preferring the presentation of a mono cartridge. A stereo cartridge for mono playback (even with a mono switch, which just sums the channels, ie fold down) is the wrong tool for the job and anyone making comments or comparisons on mono records should qualify whether they listened with a mono cartridge. I have only the ‘82 OJC Brilliant Corners to compare, but the new Craft is far and away better. I have no idea what I would think of it played back stereo, but I am not going to waste my time to find out. To borrow another one from Mazzy… ✌️

@worksbau
@worksbau 8 месяцев назад
Patrick… of course, but a MC is less forgiving on a low end arm. Most low end arms don’t have the mass necessary to be compatible with a low compliance MC cartridge. I was not insinuating that your table is low end. I know it’s not. I am curious how you find a MM better performing than a MC, not knowing what MM cartridge you prefer or which MC cartridges you have tried. As I’m sure you are well aware, there are countless variables that are at play as well. Mazzy… I am curious how and why you have changed your opinion on the small batch vs. the ‘82 OJC. In your review video, you thought OJC was tipped up and the small batch was better in that regard. I get and respect people changing opinions (I do frequently) but I would like to know what precipitated your reassessment. Bottom line is things are never as black and white as often presented. I’m happy that we can all find happiness to suit our tastes and choices. If I wasn’t so happy with the small batch, I would be inclined to buy the R2R from The Tape Project. I’m curious, but not $500 curious. ✌️
