Sunday morning and Dennis, Neville & Barry are at the swimming baths and Neville thinks the lads in the hut should get a sports team together. Wayne & Moxey are visited by Herr Grunwald who says there's a problem with a British worker and asks to see Dennis "as he is your leader". Wayne passes on the message from Grunwald that if they don't sort it out they can all leave. Dennis & Neville go and bail out McGowan (Michael Elphick). Neville gets a letter from Colin the army deserter form the previous episode, he's coming over with a few mates for a darts match. Oz bumps into McGowan in the local bar, he tells Oz he's been kicked out of the Hostel. Oz brings him back to the hut, much to the dismay of the rest of the lads. The lads decide who will be in the darts team by having eliminators to find out the best four players. All the lads want McGowan out but haven't got the bottle to tell him as McGowan has a history of violence. The Lads get the booze ready for the Darts match against the army. Neville asks McGowan for his share of the bail money and McGowan beats him up. Neville has gone and the lads think he's been going to an adult cinema. So all the lads go to the cinema, with all the commotion they spot Herr Grumwald in the cinema. Meanwhile Neville has been having guitar lessons next door to the cinema.
Dennis has come up with an idea to get rid of McGowan. He blackmails Herr Grunwald into sacking McGowan. He leaves the site but nicks the dartboard.

Each character in my opinion was class for different reasons. Difficult to single out anyone in particular. Just a brilliantly written and acted series. I was 9 when it aired. Brings back such terrific memories. Timeless classic TV.

Its realistic in a sense a bunch of misfits would actually work well together, esp with a natural leader like Dennis in there to keep them together and look after them,, with a good bloke like Bomber to lay down the law once in a while, example was him telling Oz to sit down when he wanted to go and find the woman and her bloke friends who fitted Neville up. Oz saw himself as a leader but was anything but haha.

Cliff Hanley I'm not so sure cliff, McGowan came a cross as a total nutter that wouldn't care what lengths he had to go to, to get his way, he was the type you couldn't reason with (he was well played but Micheal elphik). Oz was a hard type but didn't really go out looking for trouble, he just sort of talked himself into situations (he wasn't the cleverest), Dennis would normally be a good reasoner but with McGowan he wouldn't have got very far. IMO McGovern is the type that you just try your best to stay out the way of.

I remember coming back from Air Cadets on a Friday Night and having my supper whilst watching Auf Wiedersehen Pet. I think we must have recorded all the episodes on Betamax Video cassettes because I would watch them again on Saturday Morning. I would have been about 13 when the original first series was broadcasted. Repeats in the late 80s were abridged and censored. Now all repeats take out all the bad language and sexual content. Thank goodness for your posts to remind us of how it was and should be ❤

Michael Elphick, a great actor, really underrated in my opinion. I didn't like Boon but I liked other stuff he did. He could throw his hand to anything, the Jack Rosenthal film The Knowledge, the nasty porter in The Elephant Man and I liked that comedy he did with Angela Thorne. Sadly alcohol got the better of him and he was not the same after his wife died, remember him breaking down on an episode of This Morning. His final performance was in Eastenders, looking bloated and unwell, sadly he died in 2002 from a heart attack aged only 55

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?

Amazing series this oz brilliant taking the mick out of barry's table tennis story i bet everyone was wishing bomber was there to shift macgowan i thought oz was a tough lad he is more of a hard man in series to nutting big baz
@therebel4332
@therebel4332 3 года назад
Oz was a livewire who just wanted to be accepted deep down though, not tough just acted with a bit of an attitude that's all. He was techinically the joker of the group, every group needs one. Its need a diplomat like Dennis, it needs muscle like Bomber to keep some of the lads on the straight and narrow. Without Dennis though the group would fall apart.

Oz wasn`t scared of McGowan, but he was wary. Oz was a tasty bloke but he knew Mac was a beast. That was the key to AWP`s success. It was SO believable.

Andrew Dunn You're absolutely right. Technically, he isn't British, but I doubt their German employers would see it that way. As far as they are concerned, Irish is British. But that could have been added to the script, Dennis putting that up as an argument and Herr Grimwald telling him he didn't care whether he was from the North or the South.
