Craig Beals unveils his latest build - a sandbox like no other! The white sand acts as a projector screen and a topographic map image is projected on the surface. An XBOX Kinect is positioned to read the contours of the sand and draw new topographic lines according to how the sand is moved. This augmented reality sandbox will blow your mind!

Thank you! I literally just had a bunch of my high school students in my room after school. They've spent several days after school learning how to run the program and developing lessons for elementary kids. They will be taking the AR Sandbox to the elementary schools in our city this year and teaching little ones about science, technology, topography, etc! In other words, this project is proving to be well worth the time and effort!

Building something that baffles people when you explain it and then having them all go "OOOOOH! RAD. I want to play with that!" is just an amazing feeling. I've built a few projects that when explained sounded absolutely nuts or incomprehensible but once finished were instant hits with friends... but never this kind of hit. :P I want to play with that...

For a guy who gives the KeckCAVES people "full credit", you give them pretty minimal credit. It's effectively jammed into the last few seconds of your video. Let's be clear: the KeckCAVES researchers conceived of, built, tested, and supplied open plans to literally hundreds, possibly thousands, of people around the world, including you, who have built their own AR sandboxes. They worked with researchers, museums, teachers and hobbyists to make sure those plans could be implemented as widely and as openly as possible. My late sister founded and led KeckCAVES until her untimely death last year. They, not you, implemented the entire AR Sandbox system, and developed the fluid dynamic models that make the geodynamic simulations with water and volcanos possible. As an educator myself, I appreciate that you made an excellent video that conveys the excitement of an augmented reality sandbox. The thrill on your kids' faces is priceless. I remember experiencing that excitement when I saw the first AR sandbox. But as an educator I also know the ethical value of giving proper credit. I hope your kids learn that from someone.
@GregTuckerKellogg
@GregTuckerKellogg 3 года назад
My reaction was pretty strident, but I still think you could have (and should have) been a lot more charitable in this video. Your other video (on how to build the box, and get the dimensions right fore the projector and Kinect) is excellent, and both more charitable while also making a really helpful contribution of your own.

Brentte Winchester that is an absolutely incredible idea! I don't have a clue how you could code it but the program is continually taking a snapshot of the topography and digitizing it so, theoretically you should be able to grab that data set and convert it to a format that a printer could use! Maybe we can find a mastermind to tackle this?!

Brentte Winchester you want a 3D scanner or an AR Sandbox? I did a quick search and there is free software called ReconstructMe that allows the Xbox Kinect to be a 3D scanner. Then it can be imported into a 3D printer! Mind blown! reconstructme.net/

We find that the projector burns out quickly. Have you had that problem too. Ours is on 8 hours a day and often gets sand in it

We were running into an issue with the BenQ projector overheating as well. I think this is due to a couple of things: Sand particles and dust collect quickly in the projector (we try to blow ours out often but only after it has cooled down) AND the fan on this type of projector points out the same direction as the lamp. And, because the lamp is pointed down, the heat doesn't dissipate quickly enough. To help with this, we bought a small fan that blows air down onto the projector to help clear the heat that builds up near the lamp (I would show you a picture but ours is currently set up at another school). This really seems to help with the heat issue and with helping push the sand dust away from the intake. It is a pretty cheap and quick fix and it may work for you as well! This is the fan we purchased (amzn.to/2j0GG6g)
