August 25th 2018 - Visited Tasmazia (Maze), Launceston Japanese Monkeys, Devonport and Burnie

We checked out an awesome hedge maze in northern Tasmania called "Tasmazia" that has a variety of different types of mazes (including a super large one). The main reason we went up there was due to a strata meeting in Burnie so we thought we would visit the maze to make the most of it.
We also accidentally took a wrong turn on the way up to Burnie and ended up in Launceston so we decided to visit the Japanese monkeys there too.
Overall there is quite a bit of variety in this video so I hope you guys like it :)

It was nice to see your mum so much more confident in her driving. Remembering how she "navigated" through Melbourne it is obvious the small country life of Tassie agrees with her. The weather late August looked fabulous. When we were there in February thinking summer would be so green we were sad to see how the drought had browned every paddock especially around the Hamilton area. We really enjoyed the monkey exhibit in Launceston as well. Beautifully maintained park to spend time reading and relaxing.

Nice that you finally made it up to Launceston. We've got quite a treasure of historical buildings. It's very easy to take them for granted when you see them every day, but people travel from all ove the world to see the architecture here. (BWT, little note the pronounciation is closer to LON-ceston, rather than LAWN-ceston)

Tasmazia closes at 4:00pm and we arrived at 3:30pm. The owner was nice and said that she is happy to stay open after hours until 5:00pm, so everyone was gone at 4pm and we had an hour by ourselves.

Great Vid, Tasmazia is great fun, plenty of silly jokes and riddles throughout the place, The mountain you mentioned was most likely Mt Roland. Giving family/friends from interstate directions to Tasmazia is always fun, when you tell them to go via Nowhere Else to get to the Promised Land, you always get that confused look. Shame you didn't have time to go into Lake Barrangtion where they have the rowing competitions, quite nice in there. (was the very next intersection on the right next to the Tasmazia carpark) Keep up the great VLogs.

Always keep to the right side of the maze no matter what. Even at a dead end, curve around across the right side of the bush/maize/wood/whatever. You will get to the end in ten minutes... Because I did that when I went to a maze two days ago!

Great video Phil! How do you like Hobart/Tasmania in general compared to Sydney?
@OSFTHistoricVLogs
@OSFTHistoricVLogs 6 лет назад
I'm very biased on this one as I love modern and tall architecture, especially like what you see in Singapore and Dubai, it's like a living museum for me with the buildings being the art. Tasmania has very small cities with it's largest building being the Wrest Point Casino built back in 1973 with a height of 73 meters. In other words a lot of it's architecture is old fashioned and not very tall. This being said, we must preserve such architecture for future generations and history's sake, but what bugs me is that the WHOLE of Tasmania is like that. There isn't a single modern city here at all. If it were up to me, I'd keep Launceston and Hobart as "ancient" cities but turn either Burnie or Devonport into a modern masterpiece similar to Singapore or Dubai and pop some 400+ meter tall buildings there. But you'd be surprised by my answer to your original question. I would choose Tasmania over Sydney because PROPERTY PRICE is a factor that means more to me than modern cities. In tasmania (mainly the northern end) you can easily buy DECENT properties for less that $150,000 right in or next to the CBD's (Burnie especially). Last year I bought a 2 bedroom apartment in Burnie for just $97,000 (for investment) and it was a 1 minute walk from the CBD and a 30 seconds walk to the beach. In Sydney though, the bottom of the market is around $500,000 and that's just for a studio apartment in/near the CBD. Most decent properties in Sydney are over a million dollars and some reach over 10 million! Sure, you can find some properties in Sydney for under $300,000 (rare though) but those will be in dangerous and undesirable areas. In Tasmania, you can buy in equivalent areas for less than $50,000 for an entire 3 bedroom house. So, my final answer. I'd prefer living in Tasmania as a whole as opposed to Sydney mostly due to the price, however, if both places cost the same amount of money to live in, I'd choose Sydney. That being said though, I prefer Surfers Paradise (Gold Coast) and Melbourne as places in Australia over Sydney due to their more modern and tall architecture over Sydney's.

@OSFTHistoricVLogs

Central Business District. Basically where all the shops, jobs, services and tall buildings are, typically in the center of a city (although Launceston's buildings aren't all that tall like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and so on). Around the edges of the city, you generally have basic suburbs full of small houses but not much else. Apartments are a lot more common in the CBD of a city as opposed to the outer suburbs.

Burnie is secretly my favorite city (out of the 4) in Tasmania. I love that it's a beachside city (which reminds me of living in the Manly suburb of Sydney) yet it's so affordable to live in Burnie while providing quite a few decent services in the CBD. Although Launceston has a nice feel, you just can't beat that nice beach setting which is definitely better than Devonport, although, still somewhat slightly industrial unfortunately. Hobart is nice too, but WAAAAAAY too expensive. So Burnie truly is a great hidden gem at an affordable price but I doubt that low price will last long :P
