Afternoon drive around the downtown area of Augusta, Georgia.
Filmed: June 2020
Augusta by the Numbers (2010 Census):
City Population: 195,844
Area: 306.5 mi
Metro Population (Augusta-Richmond County, GA-SC): 564,873
From Wikipedia:
Augusta (/əˈɡʌstə/), officially Augusta-Richmond County, is a consolidated city-county on the central eastern border of the U.S. state of Georgia. The city lies across the Savannah River from South Carolina at the head of its navigable portion. Georgia's second-largest city after Atlanta, Augusta is located in the Fall Line section of the state.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Augusta-Richmond County had a 2019 estimated population of 197,888, not counting the unconsolidated cities of Blythe and Hephzibah. It is the 123rd largest city in the United States. The process of consolidation between the City of Augusta and Richmond County began with a 1995 referendum in the two jurisdictions. The merger was completed on July 1, 1996. Augusta is the principal city of the Augusta metropolitan area. In 2017 it had an estimated population of 600,151, making it the second-largest metro area in the state. It is the 93rd largest metropolitan area in the United States.
Augusta was established in 1736 and is named for Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha (1719-1772), the bride of Frederick, Prince of Wales and the mother of the British monarch George III. During the American Civil War, Augusta housed the principal Confederate powder works. Augusta's warm climate made it a major resort town of the Eastern United States in the early and mid-20th century. Internationally, Augusta is best known for hosting The Masters golf tournament each spring. The Masters brings over 200,000 visitors from across the world to the Augusta National Golf Club. Membership at Augusta National is widely considered to be the most exclusive in the sport of golf across the world.
Augusta lies approximately two hours east of downtown Atlanta by car via I-20. The city is home to Fort Gordon, a major U.S. Army base. In 2016, it was announced that the new National Cyber Security Headquarters would be based in Augusta, bringing as many as 10,000 cyber security specialists to the Fort Gordon area.

@fischerrestoration My childhood hometown as well. We moved in 1969. Did you by chance go to the Episcopal Day School when the higher grades were in that big old house? I didn’t notice St. Paul’s Church and if the driver had gone the other direction on Greene Street, he would’ve seen the huge mansions built in thev1800’s. Most are still standing today, but the home of one of my ancestors burned in the early 1900’s. Still a fun drive around! One of my brothers was there 2 weeks ago & said Broad Street is pretty deserted now. 😢

@PeteMcCorvey
@PeteMcCorvey 3 года назад
I just left there 4 months ago. Lived there from just shy of 3 years. Decent size city, you can get anywhere in almost 15 minutes. Not really much of a downtown scene. Broad Street is the only thing down there for real for real. A lot of bars and restaurants. The city could be way much more (2nd largest in GA behind Atlanta) but the city officials are very crooked and embezzle a lot of funds and the young people dont really try to change the landscape of the city. And Richmond County (Augusta's Law enforcement agency) arent really in the business of fighting crime just getting tickets and DUIs. DO NOT drink and drive at all there!
@Grimlock987
@Grimlock987 3 года назад
Maybe it's not the place for me. What about racism? Did you ever encounter any of it?
@PeteMcCorvey
@PeteMcCorvey 3 года назад
@@Grimlock987 yeah but no different than any other place. I actually encountered more racism when I lived in CA than I did there. Wonderful Southern hospitality. It is a very diverse city. I see a lot of interracial dating there. Safe areas are Grovetown and Evans which are in Columbia County if you want to buy a house. I stayed in Martinez/West Augusta which is cool for apartments. And there was a gamestop's right up the street from my complex. For comics they have a couple of stores but the one you want to check out is 2nd and Charles on Washington Rd. Be careful downtown at night people do get mugged. And downtown is right next to a hood called "Harrisburg" aka the Bottoms. It's a family friendly city and as far as a lot to do, I used to live in Atlanta so its slower to me.
