Julian. Yes, this double blade is much better than a tilt rotor, which should be considered on all future helicopters of every type. I can still see some use for the tilt rotor, but once its combined with this. Meaning, creating a new Chinook model with a longer body (50-100% longer), and having the tilt rotors in the middle. Maybe they can call it - The Dragon-Fly. If they create such an aircraft, then they can inspire in creating a new type of an airline industry. Really, there are lots of commercial applications for this, and the one I just mentioned.

It looks like Sikorsky is taking a turn at the Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne concept, which apparently was very promising back in the 60s. The new thing here is the coaxial rotors, which from what I've read make the aircraft a lot more stable and easier to control. Kamov (KA) has been using them for a long time for this exact reason.

Title should be: we have taken a good look at the Lockheed UH56 (from the seventies!!!) nd made our own variation and up to date version of it. Bytheway: the twin rotor concept with both rotors on top of each other has been used in the Sovjet military for a good while now.

If the rear-prop. can also pivot-laterally, then there can be a tighter-turning circle at level flight...Furthermore; if a full 'ball-socket'; thrust vectoring maybe achieved; even better agility will be guaranteed for this military aircraft!It's body is quite conventional; which I like very much!

A new modified version of a Chinook with this system would kill the V-22 Osprey. Unless they totally combine the modified version Chinook with a mid tilt rotor system (tilt up at 60 degrees, or so), plus longer body structure for more payload.

@stupidburp

+Andrew Gordon Since they already have scout/light utility and medium utility aircraft in the family an attack design would be the next logical step. Hopefully they will upgrade the sensors, survivability, and stealth compared to the already good Apache.
@BlairMaynard
@BlairMaynard 8 лет назад
+Andrew Gordon The Marines are looking for an armed escort for their V-22s. Perhaps a variant of this could do it, but it would have to keep up with the V-22 whose main advantage is speed....
@stupidburp
@stupidburp 8 лет назад
Blair Maynard It would have a good chance of keeping up since the V-22 has only about a 2/3 chance of being operational for the flight. These aircraft could be on their way long before the Osprey are out of maintenance. Joking aside though, top speed would likely be considerably lower but still much faster than the stall speed of the Osprey so they could cruise together. Probably going to be the closest fit for speed unless the Marines go with an armed fixed wing prop like the Mustang inspired patrol aircraft that were developed a while back.
@timmullins995
@timmullins995 8 лет назад
+Stu Bur I've read speeds as high as 390 knots. Nobody knows for certain though. The first thing the military does, is try to hide the top speed for something like this. And the first thing the public does? Try to find out natch.
@stupidburp
@stupidburp 8 лет назад
Tim Mullins I think 390 knots is way too optimistic. That would be faster than the V-22. 390 km/h is probably pretty close though which would be about 210 knots. The v-22 cruises at around 240 knots but can fly between 110 and 275 knots. Apparently 200+ knots while carrying a typical load was the design target but we don't know if it achieved this or not or under what load if it did.

Level flight without having to tilt the whole craft forwards and backwards is beneficial to the patient or injured rescuee. Speed might be useful too. And hey US military could end up cancelling it anyways. It happened to many helicopter programs. They cancelled RAH-66 Comanche, VXX and VH-71 after spending billions on each.

Xb-70 never copied, Russian SAM's killed the project, only 2 were built, why copy something that is no good.
