Lockheed finds itself with another pusher prop, rigid rotor project 46 years after the AH-56 Cheyenne. This time via Sikorsky's twin rotor high speed experiments. I wonder if any data from the Cheyenne helped in the Raider's development?
@dieselyeti

I doubt it seeing as the Cheyenne was a single rotor aircraft; not much carryover. The retreating blade stall issue would've been just as bad.

I'm a Blackhawk mechanic. Don't get me wrong.. it's cool! and I'm sure it'll serve a purpose somewhere in the military or civilian world. But I don't ever think it'll replace the uh-60 Blackhawk. It's combat proven and tough as nails. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

@roberth.goddardthefatherof6376
Yeah, i'm not an expert in helicopter design and do correct me if i'm wrong, but the Co-axial seems more unreliable to me. Other vehicles like Cars, Planes and boats have their weight supported on their suspension, wings and hulls and their engines and drivetrains only propel the machine forward. A helicopter though, both forward motion and the entire weight of the machine are put 100% on the Rotating blades and thus the drive train so a helicopters gears and drive train need to be really strong in proportion to the weight and size of the machine itself to counter the huge forces acting upon it. In order to achieve that counter rotation, you need a differential, now supporting the entire weight of the helicopter on a differential makes me feel uneasy about how long it will last before breaking whereas a conventional prop has just the shaft from the huge gearbox down below. I mean in order for a co-axial to achieve the same level of reliability as a conventional prop you're gonna need to increase the quality of it's design increasing cost. perhaps thats the reason why in the old days when metallurgical properties and engineering quality was lower everyone adopted the Convential design instead of the co-axial. I mean the first Co-axial, the Gyroplane Laboratoire which first flew in 1935 even predated the first conventional Vought-Sikorsky VS-300 which flew in 1939

It's no AIRWOLF beauty. Old-skool 1960s Cheyenne meets KA-52. Don't really get the point of it when the current generation Apache and BlackHawk are so supremely capable, in the era of F-22/F-35; Ospreys and every type of drone the US military could ever want. Will it be Apache replacement? Will it be Special Forces only? Is it specifically BlackHawk replacement troop transport?

@saltymonke3682
@saltymonke3682 6 лет назад
I think they will replace Kiowa, Little Bird and Blackhawk (Especially Seahawk) with this. Then Marines will follow to replace their Viper and Venom. Then Chinook will be replaced by a modified wider-more powerful Bell Valor as Heavy lifter. Bell valor is too wide to land on usual urban-mountain-jungle environment to compete with Raider. You can't be wider than the current Blackhawk to carry the quiet similar amount of people (Raider can carry 6 but I think they will modified it to carry 12, Valor can carry 14, Blackhawk can carry 11-12, while Osprey can carry 24). For Apache successor, I think Valor has similar good chance as heavy attack helicopter (Apache) with Raider is the light attack Helicopter (like Kiowa/Little Bird/USMC Viper).
@KT-1
@KT-1 6 лет назад
Space Monkey ,the V-280 Valor is made by Bell not Boeing. Its only about 16 inches wider from outside rotors. tip to tip. A retired Army general said the Valor would be twice as fast and more agile than either Blackhawk and Apache helicopters it's designed to replace.

Impressive, what I would really like to see is a helicopter like the Bell 222 Airwolf fitted with scram jet technology, that would be impressive... Imagine how fast that would be...

Loving the description! What Conventional helicopter only flys at 105-115kts? Hot and high limited to 35 deg C ... so no use in any of the theatres of the past few decades or Arizona for that matter! What a leap forward! That said 220kts is impressive.

Incase you lose engines & since the blades are foldable, would you be able to position them to form a wing to provide lift ?

The future of helicopters is unmanned. Didn't see any revolutionary here.

how is it compensating for dissymmetry of lift? looks like those blade aint moving a bit at high speed. how do they equalise lift between advancing and retreating blade when going so fast? i guess those blade have to be ridig AF

What was that show about a high tec military chopper? Alpha wolf or something? It was really old but had great stealth and speed abilities while retaining high armourments

50 year old idea “Cheyenne” But looks like they came back to it. Proves how forward thinking the design was back then.
