The Sikorsky S-97 Raider light tactical prototype helicopter exceeded 200 knots during last month’s flight test. The suite of X2 Technologies enables the aircraft to operate at high speeds while maintaining the low-speed handling qualities and maneuverability of conventional single main rotor helicopters. Raider will be presented for the U.S. Army’s Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) competition, as the Army looks to revolutionize its aircraft fleet via its Future Vertical Lift initiative.

The spiritual successor to the AH-56 Cheyenne ... Lockheed did not forget for all these decades. Also glad that Lockheed kept Sikorsky as a name.

Fairly fast at 200, but on the Cheyenne we were flying at 250 daily, 270 in a slight dive. Took them 40 years to get close to what we were doing in the AH-56A. I was a test pilot on the Cheyenne program, flew ship 1007.

@@berchmanrichard6070 ; Wow, given what the Army currently is looking for in recon and attack helicopters she really sounded way ahead of the time. Such a sad thing that she was never adopted because of politics. Thanks for the comment.

Anyone else notice how loud and distinct the sound was in the high speed propulser mode? Then they specifically showed and captioned a "low noise" high speed helicopter mode. It sure won't be stealthy at the advertised top speed over the battlefield. FYI: Not throwing shade or being critical - just observing performance characteristics. Every machine involves engineering compromises. It seems acoustic stealth v. speed is one in this platform.

@ronbednarczyk2497

You can't go by the audio as an indication of the true noise profile. It should be quieter in forward flight because the main rotor is slowed down with more power going to the propulsor. A slower main rotor results in lower blade tip Mach numbers and lower noise. Also, the blade vortex interaction (BVI) will change which is a big source of noise. The Raider can do level flight acceleration and deceleration. No nosing over to accelerate and no flairing and exposing the belly to decelerate.

Yes agree with others this is a flash back to the Lockheed Cheyenne AH-56 program of 1967. “Cheyenne using a four-blade rigid-rotor system and configured the aircraft as a compound helicopter with low-mounted wings and a tail-mounted thrusting propeller driven by a General Electric T64 turboshaft engine. The Cheyenne was to have a high-speed dash capability to provide armed escort for the Army's transport helicopters, such as the Bell UH-1 Iroquois”.

The Cheyenne was so cool looking because it was really odd and complicated looking and had different things going on from different angles. It was really INTERESTING and sorta alien-tech+mad max badass looking. I really love the Cheyenne, and wish they had gone into service so there could be some around now. But this Raider looks more like an aircraft that would actually make it through development hell and get produced, today. Just visually, completely aside from its actual function, it looks like a real believable modern US military aircraft.

Thank you for your input. I’m an a rotary wing aviator, test pilot, and instructor. I do realize that all helicopters can. What I was alluding to is the fact that tilt rotors cannot autorotate (at least as currently designed) nor can they glide reasonably well. What I’m saying in short this is a better and safer design for faster and longer range vertical lift.

Except: Cheyenne would've still suffered the same fate of all conventional single rotor helicopters, blade stall on receding blade. It never would even approach the performance of the Raider. Why isn't there a civilian version being co-developed to hit market, I'm sure there are plenty of billionaires that would love to double range/speed of their respective helicopters or even time share fleets that offer helicopter service to the wealthy. Also what about medivac services in the USA, that would be an immediate life saving tool.

Never considered the flexibility is using the rear prop to offset pitch angle in a hover, both nose high and low. That is very cool. Also immediate deceleration is very unique as a conventional helicopter can only offset so much forward speed before vertical lift is impacted or AoA becomes too great (just a slow process in general, in comparison)

One of their demo videos show taking off then shooting up wards and backwards while keep the nose pointed at where you just left, allows for massive gun / missile barrage if they're front / wing mounted weapons. Wouldn't doubt if it goes backwards nearly as fast as it goes forward. Allows for a crazy change in tactics.

They should have designed an articulating ducted rear fan for sound insulation and efficiency. That giant tail boom looks like it could hook into low vegetation or wires. Also constantly fighting stability in high crosswind pushing against that large tail airfoil could also be a issue as well.

Totally unnecessary, with the counter rotating rigid rotors, no "ducted" or other type of tail fan is needed, as there is no torque to counteract. The rear prop provides thrust along with the twin rotors.

We desperately need to upgrade the military helicopter technology. This seems like a good start but considering the vulnerability of aircraft like these and how they are very often full of soldiers its something that needs to be a priority. Considering we still use the Chinook, something that was aging even when I was a little kid in the 80’s, we must upgrade dramatically. Canceling the order of a single submarine for example would really help this effort. May be a bad example I don’t know, but still.
