It's one of the most rarest Austins in Australia. The GT 1300. This amazing classic is the jewel in the crown of Geoff Eastwood's British classic car collection.
In this episode of Classic Drive, Geoff shares his most treasured possession, his GT 1300, the most aspirational model of the range. It was the best appointed & presented performance vehicle from the British maker.
Geoff's 1300 GT was once owned by a British diplomat who original imported the machine from Britain to Australia. Miss S. A. Dobson purchased the GT from the Piccadilly showroom in London before she left her home land to work down up.
But, thats only half the story, so watch the video for the full details.

I had a Riley Kestrel in the 70s .......twin SU carbs ...a great car to drive . Took one from the UK down to the Pyrenees. No trouble at all there and back . The bodywork let it down at the end ......fond memories. DAVE H.

Very nice, back in the 70’s l had the yellow 1300 GT, SEE 123H, family got bigger so traded for a Maxi, another great car l loved, 50 years later l treated myself to a Austin 1300 Vanden Plas, WEE 212K.

Had four of them and loved them all. Very underrated car and beat the Mini hands down. Wife passed her test in it and the kids loved them. Just a real fun car.

My mates mum had one of these in that dung green colour. She was very proud of the fact that the 1300 GT shared the same engine and transmission as the 1275 Mini Cooper of the same year.

The 1100/1300 range was a wonderful design with amazing use of space. Great roadholding, especially the 1300GT, comfortable hydrolastic suspension - so much smoother than modern small cars with their unsettled 'crashing' ride quality - and an interior filled with light due to the amount of glass all around offering perfect visibility.

My first car was a Morris 1100, eleven years old and getting tired when I bought it, but still a lovely car to drive on twisty roads. This was a much-underrated design, so cleverly packaged.

Had one of these for 13 years the best small car I've ever owned broke my heart to sell it but went to a great BMC enthusiast and is still on the road in pristine condition

The Austin 1300 was my first car when I starded driving in 1979. I bought it for 600._ Swiss Francs and loved it for years

Remember a similar Austin 1300 who i was traveling in as a kid from northern Europe down to France and the year was around 1968. Those were the days. Like a world who dont exist anymore.

I learned to drive in the MG 1300 in snowberry white, I added 1300 GT wheel trims, looked great with red interior and walnut dash. Unfortunately it only had the single carb engine, so not as quick as the 1300GT.

They say (and they may be wrong) that there was some sort of plan to "Cooperise" the ADO16. Just as the Cooper morphed into the 1275GT, so the never-made 1300 Cooper became the 1300GT. It may be bullshit, but I like the story. This was a quick little car in the day. And this is a lovely example. The whole ADO16 range (or ranges) were wonderful cars. How lovely to see one still being enjoyed. Excellent video, thank you.

Mine was a 1970 h reg I got from a dealer in 73.drove like a mini with pep.went everywhere in it til 76 when it was stolen in birmingham.white with vinyl roof.one of my best cars I have ever owned.🤗

Fallen in love with this car thanks to your video mate. Never saw one, actually, never heard off it before at all. But, sometimes in life, as luck would have it, cars find you, even though I wasn't sure I was ready for it... My wife's grandfather owned 1976. 1300 non gt, was a project car for him, I guess, that he didn't live to see through. After he passed away, car was abandoned in his friends garage, and nobody of the family members new anything about it. 30 or some years later, finally, this magnificent vehicle saw the light of the day again- the house, and the garage it was parked in was recently sold and it's previous owner, just before selling the house, contacted my wife's mother asking if she would like to get the car back! Ofc, confused and surprised, my mother in law instantly called me asking for a favor of going there and picking it up. Long story short, was love on first sight. I'm 39years old and this is my first ever car project, completely lacking experience and know-how, not to mention lack of funds and hard to get by parts, bits and pieces, but I'm loving it and enjoying every single moment. Not going to give up, because I know, thanks to your video, how epic this car truly is, once sorted out. It deserves to be on the road again.

I bought one of these new back in 1972 same colour and interior, fantastic little car and as you say the spec was very high for that time ! loved it to bits, was mad to get rid of it after just two years and 12,000 miles only 🤦‍♀️❤

My father had an orange one but with 2 doors. I am 43 years old. So many memories..he was crying when gave it after 30 years. He kept the engine key to remember it..

So lovely particular car. I've lot of memories on my uncle's Innocenti Im3, that was produced in Italy with some modifies, in the front and at the dashboard particularly. My father had a Giulia Ti, the other uncles Flavia Coupé, 124 Sport, anyway I loved so much that small low sports family car

I loved the hydrolastic Mini; the 1500 Nomad (though I would prefer the 1300 Auto version); and the 1800 Landcrab; but from that lineup of gems, I really think this 1100/1300 somehow settled upon an enchanting sweetspot of plucky elegance, economy, and functionality.

My dad had one of these when I was in my early 20's. Here in the UK even then they were rare- ish but he let me borrow it many times. I always loved driving it too, great fun. His was the same colour as yours too. Teal blue I believe the colour is?

The "Jewel in the crown" was the VDP, and I suspect that the Kestrel and the MG were also ahead in the pecking order as was the Wolseley... Although that is rather lovely.

My father had one. 1300 GT, white with black vinyl roof. I think he purchaised it 1970 - and kept it till he died in 1992. I have seen it a few times since. It is still in good hands 😁 During the same periode, 1968 to 1976 I owned an Austin Cooper S MKll from 1968. I regret, I didn't keep both of them 🤥🤥 Would've been great fun today - and not an bad investment 😉😉

Bloody good cars, better than a mini. I used to buy them in the late 70's early 80's for next to nothing, they were very quiet & reliable but the heelboard used to rot out and take the rear subframe with it.

WOW thanks for showing us your car, I love your car mate, fabulous! It's similar to my Dad's what he bought new in 1972, Morris 1300 standard single SU carburettor, not the GT model, but I loved that car. Would love to buy one like yours, but how on Earth do you acquire a new windscreen if it breaks, or even e.g. break pads / shoes / filters? Been driving my Audi A3 I bought from new in 2006 though, it'll be 16 years in June. Thinking of keeping it going like you keep yours going, as it still drives virtually like new, performs as good as most others on the road, and spares and maintenance items are still easy to get at the mo. Can't really afford a new car, just retired a couple of years ago.

Very nice car in a colour I don’t recall seeing often. Most of the GTs I remember were orange or white. If it went straight to Australia from new, it seems odd that they registered it in the UK first, if that’s the original plates under yours. I’ve been on the look out for the Austin America version here in Canada but no luck finding anything other than a couple of rusted remains, sadly.

The colour is Teal Blue, BLVC 18. It was introduced in 71 and was used on some late Americas. It should be possible to find a better America in the US where the climate is drier, if transport isn't prohibitive. Happy hunting!

Yep I had one these 1300 GT’s, a 1971 model, same colour Teal Blue. The earlier models were in my opinion better than series 2 version, the series 1 had an oil pressure gauge which the series 2 didn’t which is all important especially as the engine was very similar to the Cooper S and didn’t have fresh air vents which quite honestly were a waste of time as more fresh came into the car by opening the quarter lights. Great little car, far better than the equivalent Escort 1300GT. It’s a shame there are so few survivors in the UK.

The big problem with them was the corrosion, my father had a1967 1100 always kept it garaged except when we went on holiday, it was undersealed from new and he religiously dried it off if it went out in the rain, it was regularly serviced at the local BMC dealer and it still rotted out after five years.

XSDUP rwd I think the problem here is the bad winters and that we have salt on the roads for about three months every year and the fact that BMC knew there were rust traps in the design and chose to do nothing about them. They were an excellent car and technically quite advanced, dad loved his, indeed when he came to replace his 1100 in 1973 he went into the showroom to buy a 1300 GT in that lovely mustard colour they did them in but let the salesman talk him into the then new Marina. I was so disappointed I thought he would come back with a 1300 GT and he came back with a Marina 1.3 Coupé.

Philip Townsend I believe it was supposed to be treated as you say and was treated from new by the dealer when undersealing was a cost option that said it was 1967 and the garage wasn't damp and and we had the annual ritual of treating the car inside te doors with a product called Dinitrol which was the forerunner of Waxoyl which is used in a similar way but the car was used every day as it was the families only transport back then. I suspect the problem was 1960s corrosion technology. Many years later when I was working in a BL dealer I went on the launch course for the series two Allegro and the man proudly pointed out that they had 'eliminated the built in design flaw that caused the sills to rot out on the 1100'. All that said my dad loved his 1100 and went into the showroom to replace it with one of the last 1300 GTs which I was very excited about and came home with a Marina 1300 Coupé in harvest gold which I was somewhat less impressed with.

I think that these cars are better than the Mini ! Very confusing range though. In addition to the 1300 GT, there was the sporting MG 1300. Luxury models were the Riley Kestrel and Wolseley 1300 with the Vanden Plas Princess above those two.

Just amazing how time alters perceptions. I remember these GT‘s new; the last gasp of the long-running 1100/1300 range. I drove one (in snowberry white - the least embarrassing colour of the three available) as a company car and used it to deliver decimal currency training. Plenty of room to store my huge cardboard New Pence coins in the boot. At twenty something, was rather ashamed to be seen in it. Looks great now and I would love one.

@@philiptownsend4026 My point is this; when these cars (and many others now seen as “classics” ) were new they were not seen in the same light as they are now. This particular model was simply not the sort of car that a young guy would want to be seen in, because it was an old model, trimmed-up with what we used to call “go faster” bits. As I recall it was only available in the UK in three colours, an orangey yellow, bright red (both of which look cool now) and white, which was the least likely to provoke gales of laughter from friends and neighbours.

My first proper car that wasn’t a wreck on wheels was an 1100. Owned it for a couple of years, but rust had started to eat through under the headlamps. British weather and poorly applied paint I guess. Exchanged it for a new mini clubman, which had even more rust issues from new, the floor carpet was saturated in water every time it rained. The dealer washed their hands of it and got no help at all from British Leyland. Then the front wheel bearings collapsed. Gave up with British cars then, only Japanese and German vehicles seemed to be built properly, shame.

Had a MG 1300 1971. A broken driveshaft made a big gap in the gearbox. Found a wrecked 1300 GT at a salvage yard and swapped the complete power package. Drove like a rocket after that. Sadly the MG rotted out from under me..

My first car when I was 17 in 1974 was a Mk1 1968 1100. Very much an old blokes car but that was all I could afford at the time - reliable but very underwhelming just like most of the bottom of the range small cars at the time. The small engined Ford Escorts were equally bad with no performance to speak of in terms of 0-60. They all rusted away in a few years given the salt corrosion from winter driving. The 1300 GT is lovely and the one to have gone for back in the day from the range - nice to see it surviving in a much kinder climate.
