when this song first came out I was a much younger man and in a way so much less equipped to deal with the story behind this song .. I cried buckets of tears then ... and I am crying buckets now ... for any person old or young rich or poor an average person or a very famous one ... when a tragic death hits them square in between the eyes they become the base human down to the core .. Eric wrote this song so that he could perhaps show the world how he dealt with his son's death in a way that was fitting for him and in doing so transferred some of that wisdom to people or persons that might go through the same thing and through the angst of the song able to get through the grief whilst still holding on to their humanity and sanity..... RIP Connor

30 years ago, at 22, whole life ahead of me with no inkling of marriage or parenthood in my near future... this song brought me to tears. It still does, every time I hear it. I was totally amazed that Eric was able to perform it live. I've performed it casually for small audiences as a guitarist and singer, and it's really hard not to get caught up in the emotion of it.

Austin really does use his body in his singing. I don't know how much was influenced by his musical theater training and how much is just innate, but it always adds to the story he is giving. Watch "I'm not supposed to Love you Anymore" and see how his entire body portrays hurt and exhaustion. He does it unconsciously, watch the live rehearsal or the Sweet& Low live this weekend, he can't NOT use his hands. And it is more than just the usual a capella 'directing' that they all do from time to time, especially Tim.

Such an amazing cover. Austin did justice to this song so filled with pain and loss. I still find it amazing how Will Jennings was able to take that first verse Clapton had written and flesh out the remaining verses. When Clapton asked him to finish the song Jennings definitely did right by his friend. And your reaction and analysis was superb, as usual. I absolutely loved this reaction!

#HFSharpDressedManCover This cover is one of his best, IMO. So emotional, as it should be. It was SO much fun seeing you in the practice session for Sweet N Low, Jen. I think I may have missed being able to hang out with you, but I know you were still there, listening in. I mean, how much fun is that, that they let us just come in and hang out, virtually, while they tweak things and get arrangements set for a show? Talk about a way to make your entire fan base feel like close, personal friends. And, Austin...so cute the way he keeps coming over and checking on those of us in the chat. Lol.

I don't think anyone can sing this with the true deep meaning that Eric Clapton does, but Austin comes very close and does an amazing job. It is truly one of the songs, that if you have any clue the meaning behind it, you can't help but cry to. This song, and Craig Morgan's The Father my Son and the Holy Ghost, are two of the deepest songs about losing a child (even with Craig's son being older when it happened, the true pain in the song is real). Austin singing this almost gives me Vince Gill vibes, who can write and sing a song with a deep personal meaning too.

You noticed something. All of Home Free uses body language to give you a hint. Austin's open hands moving inward signals an emotional moment coming. Tim's right hand descending means a 'boom" is coming. Rob clenches his fists when he's going to do something soulful. Chance is the hard one to read.

Remember, Austin trained in musical theater, so some of his movements may be from that. Part of it, I’m sure is just Austin. but Tim Foust directs himself as well, so you may see some of that rubbing off - they have been singing together for almost 9 years…. Fantastic reaction, thank you!
@patriciamcl54
@patriciamcl54 6 месяцев назад
Very few of the things you seem to think are taught in fact can be. Training in music theatre doesn't extend to directions as to what to do with your fingers! (Austin did very little in the way of music theatre before HF, so I assume you're talking about his training). He is a very gifted actor with a grace of movement and gesture which, as I said, aren't taught. In my own training, all the teacher said about movement was "Sweetie, you're not singing with your left hand, so keep it still." If you look at early recordings, he has the same use of the hands. Why you would think that he would copy Tim, I'm not sure

I love the stuff Austin does on his own channel a lot more than the stuff he does with Home Free. Don't get me wrong, Home Free as a whole is pretty much my favorite group to listen to, but they can pigeonhole Austin a bit (basically giving him the "belt really high" role a lot of the time). But, on his own channel, Austin really brings out the different tones and textures of his voice a lot more. You can hear him play around with dynamics and we get to hear him bring that tenderness to his voice. Basically, we get to see Austin be an actual artist on his own channel. Having said all this, Home Free for life baby!

Jennifer! Here on time today. Ahh yes, a bit more ... contemporary Eric Clapton, though 1992 still predates you doesn't it. 😁 But I go back to the Cocaine, I Shot the Sheriff, Lay Down Sally days. This one was inspired by a very sad event indeed so tissues would have been appropriate. Yes you're right about the piano ... he sort of delays resolving the chord until the end of the phrase. And you DID harmonize with Austin! Planting that seed for the big Home Free collab! 😅 Well, sad song but great reaction/analysis as always Jen! I always leave with a smile. 😊

This song has a special meaning for me. At the time I had no idea it was written for Eric Clapton's son who died. But my best friend died in a car accident and that night another friend took me out and I proceeded to get pretty well drunk. There happened to be karaoke at the bar and somehow I turned the page in the book and this song jumped off the page. I'd never sung it before and don't recall hearing it done in karaoke before that night. So I went up and dedicated this song to Tracy and somehow through my tears, managed to sing the entire song. I have sung it ever since and it's always done in Tracy's honor and will continue to be until we meet again.

I really enjoy your analyses of vocals and by the way, I liked your 'mini-duet' on one of the lines of the song! You really sounded good together! Austin is also so good at nullifying his accent on most songs - if you want to hear it uncensored, try watching his original video "Earn It" or Home Free's series "From the Vault" (the behind-the-scenes making of their videos).

Perhaps it's an acapella band thing - I get hypnotized watching their hand signals and eye contacts in their live videos. When Tim's going to hit a low note, his hand goes down. When Austin's going to go really high, he pulls his elbows down and slightly arches his back.
