As a Austinite this is a solid list minus The Oasis and Torchys. People only go to The Oasis for the view of Lake Travis and maybe a Margarita; not the food. There are way better Tex Mex restaurants to go to like my favorites Curras and Enchiladas Y Mas. Torchys food quality has really gone down and the price is not worth it since they decide to expand to multiple locations in many states.

Oasis is beautiful..the food is garbage. Torchy's tacos are not something anyone that likes good food, actually eats.

Torchys sucks, who wants to pay $3.50 for 1 taco that leaves a bad after taste!?

I hate torchy haters! I've lived here for over 20 years oasis food isn't great but everyone knows it's for the views , but torchys is freaking good!!! Haterrrrrr

Via 313 has some of the best pizza, and the Boston Cooler dessert drink is so good. We always stop at the one in Oak Hill when we visit family.

So, you can place an online order for Franklins as long as you order 5 lbs of BBQ (a couple of days before), which most people visiting do since they want to try everything after waiting in line for hours. Interstellar does not have as "long" as a line but they are ridiculously slow. I've been there on two separate occasions. Once, I was third in line and it still took just over 20 minutes to get my food and the time before that, I was 15th in line but left after an hour of waiting and barely seeing the line budge. They just have one person slicing the meat. La Barbecue operates at the same snail pace. Both places have very good BBQ but because the BBQ scene has exploded and elevated in quality all across Texas, you can get the same quality BBQ now at many locations without waiting for hours.

Note on donuts: also find a place that makes kolaches. Basically sweet bread with fruit jam or sausage inside.

Here are some 'Old' Austin eateries I would recommend as well: Chuy's (original location on Barton Springs Rd.), the original Kerby Lane (on...wait for it, Kerby Lane), The Catfish Parlor (South location on Ben White), El Mercado (S. 1st Street location), and Dan's Hamburgers (N. Lamar Street), Also honorable mention to Matt's El Rancho- I'm not all that crazy about it but it is one of the oldest Tex-Mex places in Austin (going back to 1952) it's always been a local favorite anyway. Lastly, a shout out to Hut's Hamburgers and Threadgill's two "Old Austin' places that bit the dust during covid :(
@RicG.
@RicG. 11 месяцев назад
Two Austin eateries you didn't mention that are long-time greats; Fonda San Miguel and Conans Pizza. Both opened in the 1970's and have been going strong since. Fonda San Miguel opened in 1975 and serves traditional recipes of interior and coastal regions of Mexico. Conans opened in 1976 and is best know for its Deep Dish Wheat Dough and best-selling everything pizza, The Savage. Both are must stops to experience the best of Austin eateries, IMHO.
@RicG.
@RicG. 11 месяцев назад
Thought of two other places I didn't mention above; The Omelettry and Kirby Street Cafe. Both are best known as excellent breakfast places and have been open since 1978 and 1980, respectively. The Omelettry serves great omelettes as well as outstanding and unique, Gingerbread Pancakes. Kirby Street has wonderful migas.

I have eaten at half your list and can wholeheartedly agree with your selections. I have returned to them time and again whenever I visit. Valentina’s has temporarily closed their Manchaca location as they opened up a brand new and much larger place in nearby Buda. Via 313 has great Detroit style pizza on 6th street. Great list Josh!

Hey y’all . Thank you for the info on all those places. I’m a Fort Worth resident and I’m going to try Franklins for the first time next weekend. Next time you are in Austin, may I suggest Guero’s Taco Bar. Great food, a really cool outdoor music area and a Tarantino movie was filmed there. it’s on South Congress across from Home Slice and next to Jo’s. Keep up the awesome content. You inspire me to get out there and see the world.

Austin Native here, and vegetarian and just wanted to add some of my favorite places: Mission Burger (all vegan burger joint that popped up this year) Nissi Vegan Mexican Cuisine (all vegan tex mex place that popped up this year) The next few aren't full vegan/vegetarian, but do have delicious options whether or not you eat meat. Ditty Dog (Hotdog Truck open Thursday-Sunday at night, Hotdogs are great, Bugolgi Fries are great. Their veggie dog is the best hotdog I've ever had as someone who's eaten meat for the first half of my life, I'm sure their regular dogs are even better) Matt's El Rancho (Usually very busy but is the best tex mex I've had in austin) Aster's Ethiopian Restaurant (If you've never experienced ethiopian food, you're in for a treat. I always take friends who are visiting for the first time here) Saffron (Really good Indian food)

6:11 Round rock donuts is not good I'm sorry. Donuts from your average donut shop in california are better but I guess thats not a fair comparison considering ca is the donut capital of the world. The problem with round rock donuts is the oil is really bad for some reason. The dough comes out in this weird orange color and theres way too much oil in them.
