Ron Berger, Chief Academic Officer at EL Education (formerly Expeditionary Learning) demonstrates the transformational power of models, critique, and descriptive feedback to improve student work. Here he tells the story of Austin's Butterfly. 1st grade students at ANSER Charter School in Boise, ID, helped Austin take a scientific illustration of a butterfly through multiple drafts toward a high-quality final product.

This was filmed at my elementary school. The oldest kids in the video graduated in 2020 and the youngest kids are graduating next year (2025) crazy that they are immortalized in this video!

For all of you asking, "Why did my teacher make me watch this?" this is why: They're asking you to think critically when judging other people's work and not to give up when judging your own. Understanding precisely what you did well versus where you struggled. Austin's first draft was his IDEA of what a butterfly was, not the actual butterfly he was looking at. As he tried again, he looked closer to better capture the image he wanted. Instead of being discouraged and giving up, his classmates told him that he had a good start but he needed to keep going. The more you focus and try, the better your vision will be. That's why you're watching this.

as a particular fan of butterfly’s symmetry yet uniqueness, I particularly learned a lot from this video about how sometimes you don’t start off perfect. You start off with a draft, and then improve and improve it as time goes on.

I think the phrase "not yet" is key to understanding the lesson in this video.

I teach at the high school and adult continuing educational levels. I have used this video for, going on 6 years now to teach my students aged 14-88 how to give good critiques. Highly recommended for in-class use.

I remember being showed this when I was young and I was amazed it's just outstanding what young people can do for their age. Even to this day im just blown away.

Amazing video that shows the learning experience as evoloution. From the popular common denominator or simplified symbol for a butterfly, to an objective personal scientific endeavour and divulgation that encompassed geometry arcs angles negative space symetry etc and culminated in an artistic endeavour of faithfully reproducing that singular perfection. Bravo!

@vt6520
@vt6520 3 года назад
Because feedback is a skill that even adults struggle with. It's really hard to find thoughtful feedback that's not "It's dumb and I hate it". When you ask why they hate it, they'll usually struggle to explain why. Personally, I think this is the worst kind of feedback: not only is it rude, but it's also unspecific and means nothing.

Nothing, because like 90% of teenagers you think you know everything. I guess the teacher is trying to help the 10% who actually give a stuff and will go on to do something meaningful with their lives.
