I lived in Austin from 1970 to around 1974 off and on. I'm from Fort Worth and I was involved in the music scene in Fort Worth and Dallas back then in the late 60s. The main music scene was centered around a lot of underground venues which included "The Cellar" in downtown Fort Worth and Dallas. ZZ Top, Johnny Winter and a lot of folks got their start there. Even a very young Stevie Ray Vaughan played at the Cellar when he was a young teenager with a band called Crackerjack! I went to visit California back in late 69 and was not impressed with the young folks there, they were not friendly at all like they were in Texas, now I'm talking about the long Haired, musician, subculture types back in the day! When I got back to Texas, a musician friend of mine, suggested I visit Austin. It way way cooler and friendlier than LA or San Francisco and a hell of a lot closer. So I went down there the next weekend and ended up at the Armadillo Headquarters and I met some folks and didn't come back to Fort Worth at least six months! It was the coolest place I ever visited and it was not crowded at all. All there was were Musicians, College Kids and the Texas Government. That was it, you could rent a house for less than a hundred bucks a month, a big one! I miss the days of my youth, especially Austin Texas! Like most places these days it is unrecognizable to the Austin it use to be back in the late 60s and early to mid 70s. Back in the late 70s a man named Michael Dell developed the Dell Computer and as far as I'm concerned that was the beginning of the end of Austin Texas, the coolest city in the United States. You just had to have been there in the beginning to understand the gravity of this statement! It's still a cool place now but nothing like it use to be!

Wow, your message paints a clear picture and takes us back to those golden days of the Texas music scene! It's amazing to hear about your experiences in Fort Worth and Dallas, rubbing shoulders with legends like ZZ Top and Johnny Winter. Your vivid descriptions of "The Cellar" and the early days of Austin at the Armadillo Headquarters paint such a nostalgic picture of a time when things were simpler and full of genuine connections. It's bittersweet to think about how much Austin has changed since then, but your memories serve as a beautiful reminder of the magic that once existed. Thanks for sharing your story-it's like a journey through time!

I'm glad to live in the greater Austin area so I can visit frequently. The trails around the lake are awesome! Also, I'd prefer to call it the "Silicon Hills Zone" so it can be like Sonic 😆

Austin has really strong communities...fitness, faith, wellness, business, conscious, etc. Austin definitely lacks overall diversity in terms of ethnicity. The food scene can be very repetitive and lacking in quality ethnic food.

Hey @achoi15! Absolutely, I completely agree! Austin's vibrant communities are truly something special, each offering its own unique energy and support system. We have a strong sense of comminity. At the same time, it's important to acknowledge the areas where improvement is needed. Diversity, is an aspect where Austin falls short. While we celebrate the richness of our various communities, we also recognize the need for greater inclusivity and representation across all aspects of our city. Again, I agree- when it comes to the culinary scene, while there are certainly some fantastic options, there's room for growth in offering a wider array of quality ethnic cuisines. It's all about embracing the opportunity to expand our horizons and create a more inclusive and diverse environment for everyone. I envy the variety that Houston offers!

Some thoughts from a long-time Austinite: You can buy a house if you have $200,000 cash down. Fact. Restaurants are the same price as in any big city. Austin's overcrowded. Any music not in a small club is $100 minimum, unlike in the old days. Now you have to pay to park everywhere. You have to stand in long lines to get barbecue Traffic is good compared to California? That's what you compare it to? It's bad. Most importantly, the friendly, cool vibe is being ruined by transplants who want to change the culture, rather than blend in. Lots of concrete now, and the electric utilities are extremely high. So many more people scowling rather than smiling. Manners are no longer a thing here for a high percentage of transplants. The cost of living is very high. All of the artists A lot of artists and musicians who made Austin cool are leaving or have already left due to the high cost of living. Many old businesses that had character and uniqueness are being evicted by speculators and carpetbaggers. You can barely see the beautiful sky downtown or our Capitol. The parks and lakes are overcrowded, as is pretty much any event. Free events exist but are rare now. Too many people and crime is up.

Google is leaving .Oracle is leaving. The influx of people earning more than 100k is driving out all the people that made Austin attractive in the first place. DO NOT move here for the entertainment industry. Starving artists are leaving too. Stay where you’re at and try to make it better. Our water supply is down to 30%. We are one flood or fire away from the Insurance companies will quit offering insurance, like Northern California. Y’all are destroying the original atmosphere that IS Austin.

Yeah, I went to the University of Houston, there are endless Asians that live in Houston. So I can see what they have a Chinatown section. In Austin, unless I go to an Asian buffet, I almost never see Asians here in Austin.

I left Austin in January after living there for more than ten years, it took me a month to shake that always looking over my shoulder and on guard feeling. Austin is just unsafe. Between the drug zombies, the cops that barely do their jobs, the heat, the bugs, the cost, the traffic and the politicians who would let everyone die just to score some culture war points..... Austin is 100 percent not worth it and I wish I could get that time back.

@@AustinTX 78704. Druggie zombie tried to follow me into my house one afternoon after I took out my trash. Million dollar homes on my block and I get panhandled inside my car as I tried to pull out of my driveway. Glad I left.
