More than 90% of eligible Australians are expected to vote in the election on 18 May - because it's one of the few countries to have compulsory voting.
The BBC's Australia correspondent Hywel Griffith explains how this works - and whether people like it.
Filmed, edited and produced by Simon Atkinson.

I am a 2nd generation Australian with Chinese heratige and I love my country just as much as the 3rd generation Australian with Italian heratige, or the 10th generation Australian with British heritage, or the Indigenous Australian whose ancestors have been on this land centuries before British colonisation. For most seats in the house of reps (lower house) the counts are still very simple. The primary votes (number 1) are tallied as this determines some funding (about $3 per vote) and the votes are tallied on 2 party preferred between the 2 likely front runners. It's only if there is third runner who is close that the full process is followed which can be very slow.

Actually, this is not compulsory voting, it is compulsory attendance at a polling station. If you can leave your ballot paper blank, or spoil it, then you have not been compelled to vote, and fines are for non-attendance not non-voting. I did not vote in the last election here in England because not one of the candidates provided any information. No visits, no leaflets, nothing. Well if they think this is how to get my vote, they need to think again. If I had my way, ballot papers would have a "None of the Above" box. Perhaps then, when that gets the most votes, the parties would think more carefully about candidates and policies.
@PLuMUK54
@PLuMUK54 5 лет назад
@Jack Richardson That would not suit me. I prefer order to disorder. By using my "None of the Above" I would, hopefully, force a situation of greater order. If none of the candidates were found acceptable, then the election would be re-run. I would not leave a vacuum, but force parties to improve the calibre of candidates, and to develop sound policies.

Informal votes, regardless if whether they were accidentally incorrect or deliberately invalid, are counted and the number is reported along with the election results. At the 2022 federal election, just over 5% of votes nationally were informal. Only 5 out of 100 votes were invalid and not all of them were intentionally informal. 96 % of people eligible to vote were registered on the electoral role for this election. This shows that the percentage of people who don't give a stuff is pretty low and the majority of people who go to the polling booth value the opportunity to have their say.

How funny! Many DO use the 'donkey' vote. That's the trouble with preference voting. Why not just be able to vote for ONE party and/or ONE candidate?
@heatherd7353
@heatherd7353 5 лет назад
Preference voting provides valuable information and encourages bipartisanship. Without it a minor party wouldn't have as accurate data on where they should spend their resources, knowledge of where they can potentially sway enough people to win a seat. And they also wouldn't be getting as much public funding because less people would put them first knowing that it's a wasted vote. And if a major party is in power because of the preference deals they made, it's in both parties interests to work together, as major party if they go make moves that are against that minor party will lose votes in next election and the minor party get to have at least some of their policies backed by the major parties.

@@melaniegrand9545 I can't defend the donkey vote but it's just done by people who don't care about politics, I doubt the % of people who do it is any different than people putting a 1 next to a random name. On the counting of the votes, the process isn't very different, just longer. They don't sort it out all at once. They just count all the first preferences like anywhere else. Then they eliminate people who can't win, and for anyone who voted for them, the sorters look at all the number 2 votes and add it to the tally, and so on until someone has over 50% of the total vote.

Hello, I just watched this with my class to get the British perspective of our democratic process. There was a rather violent reaction to how you took a bite out of the side of that "democracy sausage". We're all having a healthy laugh about it. Very un-Australian LOL!

Australia has the best system in the world. First it's a preferential system, so everyone's vote counts, even if your first choice doesn't get in. Second like the reporter said, it's compulsory, it's a citizens duty.

@meheretoday6968 5 лет назад
if we actually care we vote... if we begrudge the time it takes to get to the booth to vote we at least get to wash the whinging down with a sanga ...preferably with onion but dont go via Bunnings whilst eating it lol

Just to clear it up the fine is $20 for a first offence. $50 for repeat offenders. Enrolment and voting is compulsory. As it is a secret ballot (introduced first in Australia) it is possible and is practiced by some to vote informal either by putting in a blank or otherwise incorrectly entered ballot paper. These informal ballots are tallied and currently run at approximately 5% of the total. Most of these are protest votes. In my opinion citizens have rights and also a responsibility to take part in the governing of their country. If you don’t want to vote don’t complain about your government.

Is that why so many Prime Ministers changing in a decade without a coup?
@Kwanglebeh
@Kwanglebeh 5 лет назад
Australians vote for a party,we don't technically vote for a leader,the party decides to maintain or change it's leader.So no need for any coup. The Governor General as the Queen's representative can sack the governing party if it fucks up really bad,that last happened in 1975.

@Theogenerang

The party throws their leader under the bus as soon as the polling indicates that leader is a liability. It happened with Labor's Bill Hayden just before an election and it will keep happening so long as nervous politicians keep watching the polls to see if they have another three years on the gravy train.

It's compulsory to vote only if you enrol to vote but it's not compulsory to enrol. They try to make you believe it's compulsory to enrol by stating things like " it is compulsory to enrol to vote" now that is them saying in order to vote you must be enrolled.

I'm Australian and I'm against compulsory voting. Most people have no idea who they're voting for or what each party actually stands for. The result is that a lot of votes cancel each other out due to randomness.

No, you have the choice between a range of parties. Sure, one of the major parties will probably win but they'll take notice of the preferential votes that got them across the line. If the vote was close then the winning party will take a look at the preferential votes and maybe consider incorporating some of the other party's policies into their policies. I'm sorry, but just being apathetic about it isn't the way to go.
