Americans love democracy - until it comes to voting. So we took a look at how other countries encourage people to vote in elections. Sweden and France have automatic voter registration, Australia has mandatory voting and people in India get the day off. Should the U.S. follow their examples?

First of all why are guns so important second we do have guns you just have to get a license and store them correctly, this makes sure that they dont end up in the hands of insane people and terrorists Gun Laws: another thing the US needs

James Bond If you are an Aussie. You've been conned. Insane people and those that want to kill with a gun don't follow laws! It's very easy to get a gun of any nature here. Criminals don't care about laws.

@marvin martin So your answer is to spread more guns around like Oprah, increasing the chances of crazies getting one.

the problem is not that people don't want to vote, but that there is nobody worth voting for.

Voter apathy or just plain political ignorance is a big part of the problem yes, it's compounded by the various roadblocks to voting too.

Compulsory Voting has worked in Australia for over 100 years. But there is more to this that just compulsory voting. In Australia all citizens have the right to vote regardless of there status in society. This includes prisoners and people in hospital too! All Australian elections are held on Saturdays. To make voting easier for 2 weeks before the election there are early voting centres in every electoral district. Thus if you can't vote on election day you can vote before. If you can't physically get out to vote you can get a postal vote which has to be posted by the day before the election. It doesn't matter if it arrives a week later its still counted. All voting in Australia is carried out on manual paper forms no electronic voting is allowed due to risk of equipment faults and lack of internet connections in many areas. In Australia the election system is run by an independent public service body that is free from political interference. You cannot be a candidate in the election and be working for the Australian Electoral Commission in the same election! To also add to the differences in the Australian system we operate a preferential voting system where you rank the candidates by order of your preferred candidate. Number 1 being the person you want and 10 being the one you dont want to be elected.

Voting on a weekday is not only good for 19th-century farmers, but also for today's rich, who don't need to punch a time clock and can cast their at practically any time on election day - for instance, when the lines are shortest - while most of the working poor can only go when the lines are at their longest. Why should the millionaires in Congress want to change that?

@David Lev This is scary because a voting office can literally throw it out and claim complications with the postal system. Or claim it arrived too late. And even if it does arrive on time, absentee ballots take more time to count than the electronic ones and are usually only finished counting 3 days after, by which the election is probably over. It's always important to check the absentee/provisional ballot status online and if there is an error, immediately inform the voting office, or journalist, or attornies.

Every election to be eligible to vote you should have to take a civics test and a more indepth Constitution test then a basic history test if you pass you have earned the right to vote that year
@helene4397

What if, turning certain age on the election-day is enough for voting? 18-21 years as an example? That is enough in Finland. You turn 18 on election-day, you get to vote.

Australia's voting system and government system is excellent. I'm glad voting is compulsory here. Yet the right wing Liberals still won the last election and they are doing terrible damage to the country and to the world. But I can confidently say our people did make this choice. Just wish our government was just a little teeny weeny bit more centered... Or slightly left of center, so we can keep looking after our poor, our environment, and legalize gay marriage ffs. Our biggest problem personally is our nanny state authoritarianism. Like how Australia BANS ALL THE VIDEO GAMES.

Yeah overall it was a good election result, a reasonable shift to the centre. My own politics is shifting from Left towards the right due to feminist extremism, but the environment is just to important. Labour and Greens, please form a coalition, so we can get more funding for renewables. And my opinion on immigration is shifting from an idealistic to a more pragmatic view. But why, WHY keep the children on those prison islands. Oh and what sold me on the greens is how much work they do in the senate, they fight so hard in the senate, and Labour needs to be less totalitarian and censorship friendly and this comment is waaaay too long. beep boop.

I don't vote in any election because I feel that it's not something that's going to make my life better. Also politics is all about big money. All of these politicians are rich and they're not in my income strada so they're less likely to understand my needs. So whenever election day comes, I stay home because voting isn't worth it. It's meaningless.
