I remember watching this as a kid. It was way past my bed time, but the noise in suburban Sydney when Aloisi put that penalty away will stay with me for the rest of my life. It's the only time I've ever heard roars coming from every house within earshot and probably the only time I ever will.
It's always been the sleeping giant in this country. The giant started to stir after this win. If it weren't for the constant political bullshit surrounding the game in Australia (still lurks around today), football would've taken over as the country's national sport a long time ago.
Bresciano, Emerton, a solid back two in Neill and Moore, bench options that'd be starting today, etc. '06 world cup will always be heart breaking to me, we could (should?) have gone further
One of the best moments in football. Mark Schwarzer is one of the biggest goalkeeper legends of all time, miss your saves for Fulham! Lots of respect from Sweden
you should go to the stadium again against Honduras! I would like to see both countries in the World Cup as I have friends from both, but it is a pity only one can win the play-off :)
Simon Hill has gone on record saying that Craig Foster had fully transitioned from commentator to fan by about the midway point of the second half of normal time. Hill said he actually had to hold Fosters hands together to stop him clapping very good play by the socceroos
Whenever I am down, I'll go home after a hard days work and watch this to give myself that little bit of motivation to get me through to the next day. I love watching this.
I watch this a few times a year. Makes me cry every single time. I was 8 years old and will never forget the roar of the crowd when Aloisi put it away. Gives me shivers. I love this country.
1969cmp the Italian took a dive in the box to get a free kick in front right at the end of the game to go up 1-0. Had it not been for that Australia could’ve made the semi finals
Matilda’s made a World Cup Semi Final for the very time winning against France in a penalty shootout fkn suck shit 2005 and all your haters this is Australia’s greatest sporting moment
@@M1FFYyou might be too young to remember. Cathys Olympic run was the biggest sporting moment in Australia history. Most viewed sporting moment in Aus with 9million viewers when there were 18 million in the country at the time. It was only broken by matildas semi final vs england this year with 11mil. A World Cup qualifier doesn’t beat a home Olympic gold medal, no matter how football bias you may be.
This was a magic night. These days Australia always expects to make the cut. We will have to miss out for another 31 years for people to really grasp how special this was.
Yep tonight might be the night we actually beat a big team In a Major Tournament ! That will make the world take notice leading to more contracts for Irvine, Hrustic and the others ! :-) Good luck Jem.
I was at work earlier that day and someone had a spare ticket. I went to the game dressed in my work suit and sat behind the goals a few rows from the front and had a birds eye view of the penalty shoot-out. Absolutely amazing experience to be part of that night, very lucky - go the Socceroos in Russia 2018!!!
I’ve experienced 2 sporting moments in my life that still to this day bring me to tears. 1 - This World Cup qualifier 2 - Greece winning euro 2004 I was at this match, and felt the country was not only behind the players, but the fans - who I can only describe as being outside of themselves, a kind of delirium that only a match of such significance could stir. I’ve not experienced this since. I hope to do so with my son, one day. The post-match celebrations were equally joyful, dancing in the streets, hugging strangers, and sharing that unrelenting love for your country!
Thank you Mark! I would never forget this moment for the rest of my life! Given the toil Australian Football has went through before 2005, thank you for creating the most beautiful moment in Australian Football history. This legend will be missed. Respect.
Bloody oath. Best aussie sporting moment everrrrr. Only time I placed money on a sporting match too. I knew they had to win..it was destiny...but boy, WHAT A GAME. These guys were champions. I still strongly believe if Harry Kewell hadn't come down with that foot infection before the Italy game, we might have won! Then beat Ukraine next match...AND WE COULD HAVE MADE THE SEMIS BOYS! IMAGINE THAT
Best penalty shootout I've ever seen. Massive prize up for grabs, decent penalties, great goalkeeping from Schwarzer, and stirring commentary. I watch this once a month or so.
Couldn't have happened to a more deserving opponent. The arrogance of this team, Montero, Recoba. To stick it right up their arse on Australian soil is a memory to be savoured. I still remember being part of the 80,000+ crowd, my seat behind the goals where the shootout occurred. And every last one of us there, bonded and became the 12th man on the pitch.
Hate to say it but I really struggle to warm to South American sides in general. Some of the best football in the world, but the attitude of players and fans alike can be so utterly toxic sometimes.
Even all these years later I still watch this and yell out in delight when we score and when Schwarzer saves them. I was there that night and as a childless man I can confidently say it was the greatest night of my life so far!
What a team this Australian side was - Kewell, Viduka, Aloisi, Schwarzer, Neill, Bresciano, Emerton, Popovic, Cahill (who is still playing for the national side as well)..... just woah!
The only time I remember absolutely marking out about soccer. The first time in my life (and only 2nd time in history) that the Aussies had gone through to the World cup, we aren't a strong soccer nation so to see them do so was absolutely amazing.
I remember watching this as a child. I was about 10 years old and when Austrailia scored it, everyone ran outside and partied on the streets of Adelade, where I lived. That's gonna stick with me for the rest of my life, partying until 2 or 3 in the morning, waiting until Germany.
The hype in the commentators voices is great to listen to! They did a brilliant job at broadcasting the most amazing game of football in the Socceroos history!
Only the people who were at that stadium that night can truly appreciate that amazing atmosphere.. We were grown men crying tears of joy... Singing to the lyrics of Men at works "land down under", dancing like mad men in the streets, beeping our car horns all the way home, the Australian flag hanging out of all four windows, yelling and screaming til we lost our voices... An unforgettable night on Australia's sporting history
Massive win for Australia, even i'm not australian, i get goosebumps watching this Schwarzer heroic saves.. What a moment for them. Uruguay unfortunate, but this moment be a turning point for them coz since this they can reach semifinal in South Africa and be a champion of Copa America 2011.
Lost my mind the evening this went down. Watching with good mates and family in Brisbane with hundreds around us. One of the best if not the best highlight of my football fan life.
Thanks mate. A shame there had to be a loser and penalties is a tough way to go out. Big respect to all the Peruvian fans who travelled all the way to Qatar. Hopefully both of us will be at future world cups 🇦🇺🤝🇵🇪
Can never ever forget watching this. Still brings a tear to the eye watching it now, remembering how much it meant after all those years of coming up just short
This match is the very reason the a league still exists. While it was before Tim Cahill scored goals for fun (which pains me since I’m a Liverpool fan) and even though I wasn’t even near Sydney, or near a city at all, the streets erupted. People were chanting, marching down the street late at night and the cops didn’t stop us. It was glorious.
Wish i was there or could go back in time to experience this it would of been amazing, it’s not the same anymore everyone just talks shit about soccer/football but i will forever love it ❤️
@@echodlta I'm from Brazil and here in Latin America we don't have a league at the level of the main european powers, but it's a religion. In Canada and Asia the sport seems to be developing a lot (China and India). In the US I don't believe it because they already have their sports.
@@leonardod1846 yes totally agree, with the aleague (Australian football) it is failing unfortunately, people have it stuck in there heads that football is a “gay” sport and i get called al sorts of names for liking it. It isn’t a big sport over here because we have AFL and every single year less and less people seem to follow it.
@@echodlta I thought football in Australia was developing, at least in support of the national team. That should also depend on qualifying for the next world cups, especially Qatar and 2026. I hope they qualify and repeat the 2006 campaign.
Beat football moment I can remember. I was in my final year of high school and I can’t remember a time my siblings and I screamed and roared louder than that in delight. Such an amazing moment. Brings tears to my eyes.
Wow this still gives chills and the tears of joy flow every time I watch this special moment in our sporting history. The night we made it to the WORLD CUP.
