These Black-tailed native hens were filmed on an inland section of the Murchison River in Western Australia. They were going about their daily routine including foraging in the brackish waters edge several times a day and then retreated into the riverbank..
The Black-tailed native hen (Thanindi in Wajarri language) although predominantly dark colored; a brownish color on their back and an iridescent dark blue on their chest, are also quite colorful. The Black-tailed native hen has, as their name suggests, a black tail together with a pale greenish bill with a pale red/orange on the lower bill close to the neck. The wings have white spots, legs and feet are a reddish color and to finish off the color, they have a yellow ring around their eyes. They have been likened to the domestic chook (chicken).
Native to Australia, the Black-tailed native hen is found in all mainland states. They are a waterfowl and can be found in pairs, small and sometimes large groups hanging around in wetlands or the brackish water of riverbanks. The Black-tailed native hen can be seen strutting around either on land or the banks of waterways, displaying their tail which they hold erect.
The diet of Black-tailed native hens consists of plant material, seeds and insects. Infact, they're known to run in the water then stop, to stir up insects which they then feed on. They're opportunists and will breed when water is plentiful and therefore their numbers will increase suddenly.
It can be difficult to get close to them, they're sensitive to movement and if disturbed, will run away very fast, generally into the safety of nearby vegetation. Though in this case the DJI Mavic 3 Pro drone allowed the videoing of the hens from a distance that did not disturb them.
We hope you enjoy this video.

@susanelainesanner Thank you for your feedback. I see your point of view and in fact my other wildlife videos didn't include music,( emus, swans ) only the sounds of nature. I opted to do this video with background music in addition to the sounds of birds. As the video was taken using a Drone no sound is recorded. Whilst I did try to find suitable sounds of the Native Black Tailed Hens in post production I couldn't and opted to use music, with some birds sounds, being the Willy Wag Tail, Black Cockatoo and New Holland Honey Eater. I believed this would be a soothing combination. It didn't cross my mind that anyone would find it unsuitable. I can understand your comment and will seriously re consider the use of music in any future wildlife videos. Please if at any point music in the video is found to be repulsive feel free to turn off the sound or if this does not work feel free not to continue watching the video. I thank you for watching my video and hope you can enjoy some of my other videos.

The older I get the more I cherish the unadulterated sounds of nature. Thank you for letting me know how the soundtrack to this video came to be. The visual is so good, so excellent, and I fear I've become a bit of a spoiled brat, wanting the audio to match the visual. In this case, I did mute the sound. I appreciate your comment and congratulate you on your work. I hope you enjoy it as much as your audience does. Very well done.

We who value nature and its untouched landscapes and wild inhabitants are glad to see these birds, Black-tailed native hens. As I savoured their beauty and, for me, the newness of these beings, I was repulsed by the music and constantly reminded of humans who think nature is not complete without their addition. Music! It was hideous. I could barely hold on to sights and sounds of the birds I was so anxious to escape the sound of humans. For what is music but the sound of humans? I much prefer the sound of wind or the trickle of flowing water or the sounds of living animals in the scene. I am truly sick from that music. Lest you consider it your obligation to stand up for the use of human music when showing nature or lest you want to support the musicians who made those sounds so irrelevant and disrespectful of nature, listen to me in my last words to you, I am a musician. There is a place for music: it is not in nature. Record the sounds of the scene you are showing us, and nothing more or less. Beautiful birds, disgraceful music within nature.
