In this video we're listening to another one from Australian Crawl. We found our first visit to this band's work very interesting, and we really wanted more. This should be a good time. Enjoy!

Guy McDonough is a legend whose life ended way too young. I shed a tear to think of the demons he was going through with his addiction, but also the vast talent taken from his family and music generally by his death at such a young age.

I knew you guys would mention country, and The Eagles. I've also made that comparison in the past. The guy doing the lead vocals is Guy McDonough, the brother of drummer Bill. He had been an original member of an early Australian Crawl band called Spiff Rouch, and was invited to return to the band once they became Australian Crawl. I believe he was the dark horse of the band. This song tells the tale of a man going out and knocking on the wrong doors, and returning to his partner ''strung out'', and her saying ''oh no not you again''.. at least, that's what I think it's about. Guy would pass away in 1984 at age 28. I recommend you guys trying another Guy written and sung song called ''Errol''.

It's a song about drug addiction. A relationship ruined by drugs where she is caught between love and wanting to leave. "She don't want to cry, she just wants to know why." The lyrics tell the whole story although when Australian Crawl wanted to break into the American market they had to re-record some of their songs so the target audience could understand what they were singing. You know how James Reyne is with lyrics. He likes to slurrrr half of them and make the other half up. 🤣

Oh yes, summer of 1981/82 (November 1981 to March 1982) this song was on the radio much much much too often in Australia at the time. My brothers and mates would drive out to Byron Bay and spend months surfing and smoking pot, and listening to Australian Crawl songs til we grew up and got sick of them. RIP Guy McDonough

I just finished the book by Aussie Crawl drummer Bill McDonough about him and his brother Guy (the guy singing this song). I don't think I can see this band the same way again! I wasn't a super duper fan of the Crawl, but his memoir ''Sons Of Beaches'' has left tears in my eyes. I laughed and cried through this book. This song is actually quite prophetic. Bill is raw and honest through out the story, and he pulls no punches.

My favourite song. Love the beat and melody. Toe tapping stuff. RiP Guy McDonough. Another song sung by him in Australian Crawl is Errol. A song about Errol Flynn, Australian Actor who went to Hollywood. He was born in Tasmania, Australia in 1909 and had a reputation with the ladies. Movies he acted in included Captain Blood in 1935 and The Adventures of Robin Hood in 1938 and more. Well before my time 😁

you can see the irritation on Guy's face when James joins him on mic He shouldn't have worried. He wrote and sang on two of their hits, and James joining him on mic is a good look (bands performing on Countdown could be an awkward proposition for both band and viewers) I recommend ''Errol''

4:32 ha ha ha ... It's been over forty years, but I think that's the back of my head that you've just paused on! I was about 14. I remember thinking at the time that Guy McDonough (the lead vocalist on this particular song) and James Reyne (the accompanying singer in glittery shirt) made an odd pairing. Their personalities were quite different. James could have airs about him at times, and Guy was kinda mysterious. It almost looks like Guy is getting irritated by James Reyne in this. I was devestated when my friend called me on the telephone to tell me that Guy had passed away. He was a good singer/songwriter in his own right, and added so much to Australian Crawl. RIP Guy McDonough .. almost 40 years gone! Ouch...

Teehe, my name comes from an experimental thing that my friends and I created when we were in our 20's... It consisted of mashed banana inside a pastry... I can't remember what it tasted like. I was very drunk when I tried it, and I never ever attempted to make it again. My friends and I called it an Australian Banana Pie and thought it was the most ridiculous thing. Why I have it as a user name I do not know. I loved the Sirocco album at the time. It was a great tape. Sadly, an American friend also liked the cassette and decided to take it home with her .... back home to America. Still not impressed by that.

Are they trying to be like The Eagles or other southern rock bands?
@Robbo766
@Robbo766 Год назад
Wouldn't put it past them. They were also toying with a mild form of reggae-rock, à la The Police, around that same period. The guy doing the lead singing is Guy McDonough, who was the new man in the band at the time. It's likely he wrote this song a few years prior to joining Crawl, and decided to drag it in to fill the album. A lot of people were Southern Rock influenced in the mid 70's, so I'm sure this song goes back further than it's 1981 release. No disrespect to the late Guy McDonough, but he was a heavy drug user and this song is most likely about him. The rest of Australian Crawl were rich boys that surfed, so they were more a surf rock band than an Eagles inspired band. Their next album ''Sons of bitches''... sorry, I mean, ''beaches'', was less Southernish.
@aldunlop4622
@aldunlop4622 Год назад
Not really it’s more that “soft” rock was a style at the time. The lyrics are usually very personal about people, issues etc. , the words are a lot serious than you’d think.

The bloke that sung ''beeu!-tippi-peephole'' in your last Australian Crawl reaction video, ''Beautiful People'', is the sidekick bloke trying to share the mic with new guy, Guy McDonough, in this clip. Judging from this appearance, it looks like Guy might have been under the influence of opioids, which seems oddly fitting, seeing as the song is about a junkie. Guy would die of AIDS related causes a few years later. A real shame. Australian Crawl members and relatives do check on comments, and sometimes fire back at comments they're not comfortable with. I hope mine causes no offense. Great song. I recommend ''Errol'', ''Hoochie Gucci Fiorucci Mama'', ''Things Don't Seem'', ''Downhearted'', ''Indisposed''. The picture at the end is Australian Crawl in 1979 - Guy was not a member then.

7:47 Tells you all you need to know about the Guy and James dynamics. It's Guy's moment, but James is the leadsinger and he's going to be noticed, whether Guy likes it or not. Some could say that they would have been a better band without James Reyne, but without him, you wouldn't get their biggest hits and that distinctive vocal. These guys were on their way to something very good, but instead of striving to reach their full potential, they decided to settle on being just okay. Australia makes Australians laidback... Aussie bands with potential need to have a manager that's like a bloody sporting coach.
@liveitup67
@liveitup67 Год назад
I used to make it to the front of the crowd to watch groups perform on countdown. it was an opportunity to watch band dynamics. I don't remember Guy being very ''happy'' or ''energetic'' when he was doing this song on the Countdown set. More often than not, what you get on TV is not what you get when you're in the studio. I got to see bands not look at eachother as they're setting up, and then when suddenly become best of friends when the cameras are on. This is a little outside of the Countdow conversation, but it's kinda the same thing... I don't know if you got to see bands play at your High School, but I got to see many, and one band I would never forget was The Sports. They were fighting before they walked into the school hall, and then after the gig, they continued fighting, with punch ups... it was sad because ''Who Listens To The Radio'' had just been a hit in America and here they were at my school.... fighting! 😦
@OnceWasRStrathfield
@OnceWasRStrathfield Год назад
