You can start tailgating tradition in Australia. Grab as many few friends and family. Go to the stadium hours before the game starts. Set up a BBQ grill. Start grilling meat. Have large amounts of beer and other sorts of alcohol. If you want play some music. Have beach chairs, well any type of chairs you can get. Don’t forget the sides, whatever Australians like as snacks. It starts with one tailgater then others will want to participate for the next game.

Tailgating is considered an art by hardcore fans. Many people have dedicated vehicles, used exclusively for tailgating. Often, they are large SUVs, RVs, or converted school buses. Typically, they are gaudily decorated and painted in team colors and logos, and have been customized to include huge stereos, televisions, and mobile kitchens. Unlike European sports culture, rival fans often party together (to be fair, some rivalries are heated enough that fan integration is unlikely). Furthermore, foreigners are almost universally welcomed, no questions asked. If you arrived at a Nebraska Cornhuskers (or nearly any other team) pregame tailgate, and introduced yourself in your Aussie accent, you would be greeted with open arms, without hesitation. Before you could blink, you would be handed a beer and a plate full of food. And in case you're curious, it is considered polite to offer a few dollars for the hospitality. Midwestern fans would certainly take note if you did not. Call it slavish devotion to good manners and guest etiquette. However, the vast majority of fans would refuse to accept money. If you persist, they will not be persuaded. Although once again, Midwesterners would consider that a diligent effort to be polite. Let it go after the second refusal. Tailgaters of all stripes tend to bring extra food and drink with the expectation that there will be drop-ins. We Americans have many flaws. But, we've got a few nice qualities, as well. Tailgating is amongst our most unique and charming.

I'm Canadian. First time I experienced tailgating I was 16 at Michigan Speedway to watch a NASCAR race. We got there really early because at the time the road going in was only 2 lanes and took forever. So we we're there at like 6am and went to sleep in the car. Around 8am, guys started knocking on our window. Within 10 mins I had a beer in my hand, people were offering me joints, and I had a plate full of shrimp and other BBQ. Nicest people on the planet

What do you serve at your backyard cookout? You start with that. Ask everyone to bring a dish. As time goes on people try to outdo each other. People start bringing a grill. Then they custom build a smoker/grill. They buy a huge pickup to haul it. People set up sound systems and blast music. People spend the year coming up with clever desserts, sides, special drinks, bbq recipes and figuring out how to make in bulk and transport it. People start investing in elaborate tents or RV's and it becomes a major expensive hobby. At University of Tennessee the stadium is right on the river. Some people travel to the game by boat and dock at the stadium. The "Volunteer Navy" tie their boats together and you can walk from boat to boat sharing food and drinks and watching the game on tv's but you can still hear the bands and the crowds in real time. Traditions start because when you put together tons of happy drunk people, absurd stuff happens that just hits the right note and people start doing it all the time. It does get to be a hugely expensive hobby. People are really generous with invitations to eat and drink. I've often wondered how much people spend annually that do this religiously.
@protorhinocerator142

The key there is to have enough culinary diversity that your one unique dish stands out. If you make a weird dessert that everyone loves, then you're the dessert guy. Everyone else will be making burgers and dogs but you're the only one with that special dessert. You get invited back.

Across America on game days "Armchair quarterbacks" also gather at their homes surrounded by friends and family with blazing grills, tubs of booze and soft drinks, enough food to feed an army and their TVs roaring as they watch their favorite teams battle. Backyard tailgating the best of both worlds, great seat to watch the game, toilets close by, comfy chair, cheap admission to game and if you overindulge no worries about the drive home. You can sleep on the grass, sofa, carpet and know you won't get a citation or hauled off to jail.

Different regions have different dominant foods, Beer being a constant. For the NFL, for instance, Minnesota and Green Bay, where a lot of German and Eastern Euro immigrants settled, Bratwurst on a bread roll is ubiquitous, usually with sauerkraut, you can also find "Sloppy Joes", ground (minced) beef in a BBQ sauce on a Burger Bun. Move down to Chicago, Italian influences mean Italian Sausage and Pepper on those rolls, although Brats, Chicken, and Hot Dogs also can appear, as they do most everywhere. Kansas City is in pork country, pork ribs or BBQ loin on a hamburger bun. Denver and Texas, cattle country, Steaks are not uncommon as is chili. Chili also for Arizona. New Orleans, you are looking at Cajun food spicy shrimp (prawns to you), Jambalaya (a shrimp and sausage stew), or "poor boys" spiced shrimp on a bread roll. New York or Buffalo, BBQ Chicken and Hot Wings (Chicken Wings with a Spicy BBQ Sauce). California, BBQ Chicken and raw vegetables with dip is common. Some of the East Coast towns near the Atlantic, Crab or Lobster rolls aren't uncommon. Moreover, as, despite the distances needed to travel, visitor teams fans also show up in numbers, so, wandering through a parking lot, there is, usually, a convivial party with both team cultures represented, and often strangers are invited to partake! BTW, if you let your Aussie accent slip, nearly all the beered up tailgaters would deem it an honor to be your host, at their feasts!

Now that you've seen what goes on in the parking lots before the game even starts, that gives you some more perspective to your other reaction videos about college football game crowds. Now you see what everyone was doing for a few hours before packing into the stadium! Someone who lives about 15 minutes away from me has converted a small RV into a tailgating van for Philadelphia Eagles games. As teams get deep into the playoffs, the local news crews will go out and look for the best tailgating setups in the parking lots. I remember seeing a full-sized Class A RV (that's the size of a city bus!) and a giant party to go with it. Once it came time to go in, one or more of the wives would stay behind and watch the game on TV sitting in the RV waiting for the husbands to come back out. Hey, if you can park for $30, skip a $300 game ticket, and still get to watch the game sitting in something as comfortable and quiet as your own home, you might have the best seat in the house!

1. Food? Generally grilling stuff, and can be regional. I am sure the Saints are grilling catfish in Cajun spices. But a lot of hotdogs, hamburgers and steaks. 2. Tickets to games are generally expensive. So if you get a few, it becomes an all day experience for you. Baseball generally doesn't have it, mostly because many of the fields are in urban environments, thus not a lot of parking for tailgating. So the biggest tailgates are where the arenas and stadiums have the biggest parking lots. 3. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in the Autumn are football days usually. Fridays are High School, Saturday is College and Sunday is NFL. Both College and NFL do play during other days, the big games are on during those days.

Tailgaiting is the best. We almost enjoy it more than the game. At least you can't lose the "Tailgaiting'. We normally show up about 4 hours before the game, I usually plant the Teams Flag and raise it up high...Start up the BBQ and cook what ever Usually Brats and hotdogs, burgers, chicken...we drink lots of beer and usually play games like Cornhole and throw the football around. About an hour before game time we pack everything up and head into the game...But tailgating doesn't stop there. We usually get back to the Truck after the game and stay for another 2 hrs, while all the traffic leaves. This is where we smoke our Victory Cigars (whether we win or lose). Chill out and chat about the game....Then it's time to leave and sleep off another great day.

I worked for a great company for 40years and I planned the tailgating for our home college games. I would spend $10,000.00 every tailgate for a tailgate space and we would cater bbq, beer and liquor, huge tent, TV’s x 2, rental of a climate controlled 50’ trailer with sinks, potty, vanity’s, etc. and everything was free for our customers, and I don’t remember going into a single game.

For starters , Tailgating takes place all over North America. Yes in Canada and the United States. There are even games in Mexico along with tailgating. Tailgating takes place in the Parking Lots and neighborhoods near stadiums. For example when tailgating beers become a unit of measure. For the stadiums in neighborhoods, the distance from where you park to getting into the stadium is how many beers you drink on the way. As in we parked a 2 beer walk from the stadium 😂👍🏿. Local businesses also open there parking facilities to tailgating. Local radio also throws Tailgating parties

The Florida - Georgia tailgating ("The Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party") starts 5-7 days before the game. RV's start showing up the weekend before to start the set up. Usually they are families or large group of friends and a couple of them drive the RV down to Jacksonville, FL to get a good spot and start the set up. Everyone else in the group trickles in during the week and stays at local hotels. Each team has a pep rally 24 -- 48 hours before the game scheduled somewhere downtown and you will often find a concert or two going on during that week specific for the tailgate crowds. The stadium is also only a block away from the St John's River, so people also come in by boat and stay the week as well.

I can only speak for Chicago Bears tail-gating but as far as the food goes, Italian sausage, beer boiled brats, burgers, hot dogs, various marinated chicken, polish sausage, and ribs for grill fare. Italian beef sandwiches are required. Nachos of all kinds proliferate the scene. The sides are as varied as the marinades and beer. All kinds of dips (buffalo chicken dip and jalapeno popper dip are some of my favorite hot dips). All kinds of finger food. Chili and Sloppy Joes as it gets colder is added. For the booze there's lots and lots of beer of all kinds and spiked punches have become a big thing lately, and as it gets colder, hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps makes it's way in (God bless that concoction). It's so good on frigid game days. Honestly, it is crazy. Even to the participants. No lie, there are guys who have customized trucks specifically for tail-gating painted in the beloved team's colors, complete with space and refrigeration for kegs of beer and food, cooking surfaces and grills, hot boxes to keep cooked food hot, and a tent cover for the whole shebang for protection from snow, rain, sun, and wind. And never to be uncomfortable at the event, they have storage in the truck for many, many folding chairs and tables. Some even have proper couches and area rugs out there in a make-shift parody of a livingroom. Others erect miniature stands that can hold about 20 people to watch the game from there. Huge tvs and sound systems blare before the games on the trucks while cornhole, passing the football around, inviting complete strangers to come eat, drink, and be merry together are the activities. It is expensive though. One of the trucks, I know cost almost $280,000...without a drop of beer or a morsel of food in it. I mean, that's the cost of a frigging house. And modifications on these trucks are never finished. The guy I know who has the truck I just mentioned added over 1000 firework mortar tubes this off-season to be shot off electronically after each Bears win. That's about $4000 right there for every win. The cost of the food and beer is not an insigficant expense either. Several hundred dollars in beer for the kegs and the food can run over $2000. And that is for every home game and every away game close enough to drive to. Some guys drive to every away game, no matter how far. So, every week, it's hundreds of dollars for the tickets, and thousands for food, booze, gas, (lodging for away games), and now fireworks for the victories. Oy!! He's got money so he can afford it but holy crap does he spend on it. Mixing with rival teams tail-gate parties do happen but if the rivalry between the teams is intense, the combination of alcohol and rivalry often ends in fists. So, it might be the better part of valor not to mix fan bases at the tail-gate. However, that being said, the best time I ever had at a tail-gate was when our group of about 10 vehicles, including 3 mega-tail-gating trucks and 100 Bears fans parked next to the visiting Packers fans tail-gating contingency of their 2 mega-tail-gating trucks, 20 other vehicles and about 100 Packer fans. Chicago and Green Bay fans are close neighbors of eachother seperated by a mere 40-ish miles. We shared each other's food, tail-gating ideas, beer, back stories, and as we got more and more drunk we laughed and cried as we recounted stories from both sides of the oldest rivalry in the NFL. Never laughed so hard in my life and made friends that am still in weekly contact with and dated a few of them. Honestly, if you are a serious fan of a team, there is no better way to celebrate your Fandom than to tail-gate. It's just a blast and judging by the few Aussies I have known, you guys would love tail-gating in Australia. Few nationalities are known to love drinking, fighting, and sport more than Aussies. Sounds lime you should start the movement down under and get in to the history books.

And "walking in parking lot with the tailgaters at arrowhead stadium 1-30-2022" is just a couple of Cincinnati Bengals fans walking through the tailgating on the way to Arrowhead stadium in Kansas City a couple of hours before a game. You'll notice no one attacks them or says anything to them or other Bengals fans there at all really... even the Bengals tailgaters. I've only been to home games and I usually get there just before game time but I walk through all the tailgating and you see all kinds of stuff. I'd say hamburgers and hot dogs are probably most common but whatever you imagine putting on the grill you'll find. I also imagine that regional foods would be served as well like burgoo in Kentucky or jambalaya in Louisiana for example. Sometimes, especially during big games, there will be bands playing but you'll invariably hear people playing music on boom boxes or whatever. Another thing to keep in mind is that college football in America starts in the very late summer and goes to the end of fall so the temperatures can vary significantly depending on where you go. Where I live those early games can be quite hot and muggy and by the end of the season everyone is bundled up and some have those hand and feet warmers because it's so cold. That can certainly change the types of activities you have for tailgating. At the beginning of the year I see lots of people doing things like throwing footballs and playing corn hole but at the end of the year, not so much.

One thing to keep in mind, don’t be in a hurry to get out of the parking lot. You get there hours before the game, you and several friends bring your pick ups and your families, or at least your spouses/dates. You can organize the production within the group. Some might bring tables, some might bring the grills some might bring the drinks and the ice and the coolers, etc. It varies by the groups involved. Other times everybody brings their own stuff and you trade off. Again, it varies. A lot of the food is pre-prepared. But you want the meats, and some of the vegetables, freshly grilled on site. Of course, not everybody gets a chance to go to the game in person, so they kind of re-create the tailgate party at home, while they watch the game.

Here in Texas, tailgating is usually a three day event. Friday nights are reserved for high school football. On Friday nights, if you're not tailgating, you're usually at the local Pub/Bar, or crowding into the local Tex/Mex or Barbecue joint, with a few dozen friends. Saturdays are College football tailgating days. A LOT of tailgating goes on at college games. Most college tailgating events are even bigger than the events at National (professional) games! U of Washington has an open endzone, so the BOATS in the lake get to line up and tailgate. Most go in to watch but many just stay out in their vessel, watch on tv and hear the crowd just outside!

On a bus/train you would have to have one person pull a little wagon or bike trailer, and someone else take one of those grill/bbq (what do you call them?) on wheels. The sort with wheels you can have on a patio. Or one person bring the truck/RV and the rest just show up however they get there. An alternative would be food trucks if the fans, specifically, aren't bringing the equipment. Restaurants on wheels scattered around the stadium and the crowd just has a good time party. "Yard games" and talking shit are the other two elements - cornhole, lawn darts, frisbee, bocce ball, etc; think beach games but played outside the stadium for a few hours before the gates open (and loads of food & drinks). And obviously sport-themed rather than beach themed.

Saturdays during football season, college or professional football fans arise early and hit the tailgating. Games are an all day family event. It’s more fun than the law allows. Start your own tailgate. You would be the man!

What kind of food? I make my homemade mac & cheese, deviled egg potato salad, and any deserts the day before. Smoking the brisket and ribs also starts the day before! Sometimes just some hotdogs, brats and hamburgers will do if we don't want to spend 12+ hours with the smoker. That day, we get to grilling jalapeno poppers, kabobs. Kids don't mind veggies when they are done on the grill! Tailgating is so much fun! We do it at high school football games as well.

You would LOVE a tailgate party..because EVERYONE loves a tailgate party. It's, literally, impossible to argue with a tailgate bash. It just makes game day so much more of an experience :) I sincerely feel like it's a tradition that could catch on worldwide. Pick your sport, set up shop before the big game/match/whatever and make it an event.....build memories.

The food at tailgating parties is American cook out food. In Kansas City, they are famous for a particular style of barbeque, thus they have one of the largest tailgates. It's portable barbeque, and though no official winners, it is like a cook off. Where people try to outdo everybody else. Ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs, steaks, whatever you can cook on an open flame, or smoke and what happens to be your best dish.

Most common tailgate foods are burgers and hot dogs on the grill, BBQ and chicken wings. You can find almost anything though. Lots bring pizza and sandwiches as well. The most common thing by far though is booze! It's a blast and a big part of Anerican sports culture.

My guess although I've never tailgated, is I wonder if at some point alcohol was not sold in college stadiums and food is not cheap there either, so the tailgate is a great place to gather friends, eat the specialties each person/family brings and drink whatever they want before entering the stadium. I bow to anyone who has had this experience and can give the facts.

One drawback to tailgating - The United States is rather unique in just how many people own cars, trucks, SUVs, and even RVs. However, you can fit everything you need in a backpack or two - I've seen people unpack a chair, small grill and freezer bags full of meats, sides, etc. and go to town alongside everyone else. We've simply turned game day into game ALL night and ALL day on game day. It's like a hardcore mini-vacation packed into a couple of days with new friends and family you never knew you had until that day. :) If you end up being on hard times and can just barely afford your tickets for the game that weekend, no worries - there will always be plenty of food to go around and everyone is happy to share. Just bring extra next time or something! If you so much as bring a cheap bag of chips to a huge layout somewhere in the parking lot and show you made an effort to contribute - people will start shoving plates in your face until you can't eat anything for days. lol It's one of those weird and wonderful times in America where you get to be loud, rowdy, and ridiculous, and nobody cares or gets upset because they are right there with you having fun! Of course, we make sure to create as many excuses as possible to do that on a regular basis lol.

One rule is to bring a LOT more food than you really need. Everyone is a friend and a little showing off of your cooking skills is needed. Opposing fans may catch a lot of good nature harassment at the tailgate but are generally welcome if they have the same good natured attitude.

I live near Clemson, SC so Tiger tailgates in the fall are a routine thing for many of my friends and I occasionally tag along. It's always a good time and for as rowdy as folks can get in the stadium, in the parking lot it's almost always good fun even with people supporting the other team. It's not unusual for people to go in late to a lesser opponents game and leave early but they haven't gone home. Nope, they went back to one of the hundreds of tailgates that are still going on. Memorial stadium holds about 80,000 people and more than that are in town for the weekend. Some people just come for the party. The best tailgate I ever went to though was outside of a Jimmy Buffett concert.

That is very true. In the NFL it is the teams that are mediocre that seems to have the best tailgates. Any team really but those not doing so well seem to party best. Food: Jalapeno poppers, BBQ, Nachos, Buffalo Wings (not just in Buffalo), potato salad, Brats, hot dogs, hamburgers, etc. People setup big screen TV''s to run off of DC & get a much better view than inside the stadium. Wonder around a tailgate & ask questions. You will be amazed how many you are invited to sit down.

US is a car culture. Everyone drives their car/truck/suv to games. 100k fans means lots of automobiles and lots of people bringing lots of food and booze. Tons of food and alcohol in the parking lot before the game. This is at every college and pro football game across the country every Saturday and Sunday during football season. FYI - College football is the best celebration by far.
